    Grateful Dead & The Band - What a New Years to remember. I hear Garcia was a complete party mess, hanging out with David Crosby, among others. I think the freebase, and the dragon were running amok backstage. All 4 shows of the Deads were awesome, and this set to boot on NYE. Those were the days! Thanks for the upload, and the memories.

    Levon Helm pulled out of the 1966 tour with Bob Dylan to go work on an oil rig. Robbie was the one to invite him to Woodstock after that gig. Enough said!

    I saw this lineup (with the Cate Brothers Band) in West Palm Beach in 1984. Levon was absent though (having some throat surgery, as Danko explained).

    As good as Robbie Robertson was at guitar, and as good as he was at writing songs (and he was REALLY good at that), he was the one guy you could take out of the live lineup and have the minimal least impact. All of these guys were so talented... all of them could have started, led, and starred in their own bands. It was like a supergroup.

    • @hannejeppesen1809
      @hannejeppesen1809 4 месяца назад

      Started, led their own band. Perhaps, but they didn't, they didn't have the ambition. Richard had major alocohol and drug abuse problem from his teen years. Levon and Rick also had drug problems, mainly heroin, it tends to get in the way of being creative and productive. Robbie did drugs as well, but not heroin, and music always came first with Robbie. I love all of them, especially Robbie and Rick, so I'm not being judgemental.

    • @american_cosmic
      @american_cosmic 4 месяца назад

      @@hannejeppesen1809 Well, of course... those guys weren't going to go out and start their own bands at that point. I'm just talking about talent, musical ability.

    Richard is on point, so much better than his mid 70s performances. I think The Band in the late 70s early 80s produced some of the best performances in their careers. They just ooze music. I miss them.

    I am currently reading Robbie’s book Testimony. So I certainly am a bit biased on the Robbie/Levon deal. Just as those that have focused on Levon’s books are biased toward him. I can’t argue either side since I’ve only read Robbie’s. I do think people have picked sides and don’t want to hear anything from the opposing side. Bottom line, they were a great band that made some fantastic music. Unfortunately drugs played a big part in their break up as they often do.

    • @hannejeppesen1809
      @hannejeppesen1809 4 месяца назад

      I have to agree with you. I too read Robbie's book, I have not read Levon's book, and I don't think I will, his bitterness towards Robbie is a turn off, and he had a ghost writer that supposedly wrote stuff that was embellished or worse. I did read Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band, and it gives a much more balanced view, none of them were angels, and Hoskyns is critical of Robbie, but also goes into how hard it was for him to deal with 3 heroin addicts, while keeping The Band together and being married with young children.

    i was at this show - just 16 at the time. they were opening for the grateful dead, and I got a ride to San Francisco from l.a. i only had a vague notion who the Band was at the time, but this started my long road of fandom. so amazing to revisit the show 40 years later. I would see them again a few months later at the Palamino club in l.a. at that gig, I saw Rick Danko at the bar, sat right next to him and ordered a beer. my fake id worked, and I got to hang with Danko for about a half hour and pepper him with dumb questions. he was nice and funny, and told stories of hanging with Garcia this very evening.
