IMHO. High energy density battery technology that is not recyclable and requires materials that could one day be exhausted is a dead end for electric vehicle owners. In light of that, Hydrogren fueled vehicles does make sense, but the production of Hydrogen requires electricity. If all vehicles ended up on Hydrogen for fuel the electric power requirements cannot be supported with the current infrastructure. Supply and demand would drive the cost of electricity up and along with it the cost of Hydrogen, to the point electricity and hydrogen powered vehicles becomes unaffordable to the masses. The only viable long term solution to the increased demands on power would be nuclear. But nuclear power is not a popular or a available option in most countries. Fossil fuel power plants are also low on the public option scale. Solar panel are slave to the weather so they would be limited in this application by geography. Likewise wind power is subject to the weather and geographic locations and is the least economic solution as well as hazardous to certain endangered bird species in certain locations, not to mention not recyclable and often buried in the ground. At best hydrogen powered vehicles maybe limited to commercial trucks in the future. Overall, the safe, low cost, nuclear power option will have to be addressed, to enable any electric driven vehicles in the future. Maybe leaning on the nuclear power plant technology used by the military or proven common designs used by the French.
