    -The V2 made some remarkable breakthroughs. The missile when through 5 radical changes in flight phase from stationary vertical launch balanced on its tail, subsonic at low altitude, supersonic at high altitude, hyper sonic, with massive changes in pressure, center of gravity from fuel changes and while dealing with tank slosh. To maintain stability an electronic autopilot computer called the mischgeraete was developed. In the LEV-3 system. Two gyroscopes the verticaknt and horizont with potentiometer pick-offs measured DC voltage. This was modulated into AC where it was easily added and multiplied by modulators. Positive negative was kept track of through phase. After implementing a PID algorithm it was modulated back to DC and used to operate the electrohydaulic valves of the exhaust vanes. This was the only system fast enough and vibration resistant enough to work. A single PIGA accelerometer along the thrust axis kept track of speed and controlled motor cutoff and tilt over by cam switches. The more advanced SG-66 system used gimbaled gyroscopes with cross range accelerometers to nullify cross winds and was expected to be 12 times more accurate. It was test flown several times before the end of the war.

    There is one in the imperial war museum if any wants to see one close up. For rocket science I recommend Scot manly or the everyday astronaut videos. On this very day it has been announced Iran has sent rockets with similar capabilities as the v2 to Russia. I’m sure russia plans to use them in their continued effort to target Ukrainian civilians just as the nazi’s did. The lesson we should be learning from the past is that despot dictators like hitler and Putin have to be stoped by the west.

      "plans to use them in their continued effort to target Ukrainian civilians just as the nazi’s did......" -The reason the V2 was used against cities is because the Germans intended to create a counter terror against UK cities so that they had leverage to negotiate the cessation of bombing of German cities. Thats why they were called 'reprisal weapons (vergeltungs waffen) sometimes mistranslated as vengeance weapons. The Germans did not design the V2 for use against civilian targets ( though they had a good reason to target cities as I will explain) In the 1930s Germany Army saw it as a way of circumventing a total restriction on development of artillery by the treaty of Versailles. Werner von Braun had promised 1 mil accuracy for the A4 (proper name of the V2) which equates to 1000m error at 1000km, 300m at 300km maxim range and a respectable 50m at 50km. The number was chosen because it was 50% of the very best big artillery. The fuel and oxidizer propellant created a truly massive explosion when operated at close ranges allowing the missile the possible use against tactical targets since the accuracy would be quite high at 50km. -The guidance systems to achieved these inaccuracies were the SG-66 gimballed inertial guidance system which had PIGA accelerometers for precise velocity measurement (which was test flown several times) and the "vollzirkel" system using beam riding, Doppler for speed measurement and radar for range measurement to cut off the engine. (See Donald McKenzie "Inventing Accuracy") both would have been accurate -Werner von Baun and Dornberger begged for 1 year more time to perfect the V2 and its guidance systems but were forced to go into production 1 year earlier. The Actual guidance system used was the interim LEV-3 system which had only two gyroscopes and a single accelerometer along the thrust axis. When tested over about 28 test flights the accuracy at maximum range was 4km ! which is about 1300 mill or 1 degree. In actual use the accuracy was twice as bad (about 9km) but much of this is due to quality control isues, missile failures etc. -In 1942 RAF bomber command had been issued the "area bombardment directive" by HM Government. In this the RAF bombers carpet bombed a city by targeting the geometric center of a city aiming to 'dehouse' and 'demoralize'. So Britain was officially attacking civilians in 1942 by carpet bombing housing. You can see Arthur Harris Memoirs where he notes that in the first two such raids against Lubeck and Rostok no specific target was chosen. The aim was to start a firestorm and burnout the city which they succeded. -There were those in UK who wanted to wait up to a year until better navigation aids had beend developed. (Oboe using orbiting beacons or H2S with 3cm radar instead of 10cm and gyrostablised antenna) -So Britain had already decided to bomb civilians because it lacked the accuracy to do better rather than wait till technology improved. -I note that when the Luftwaffe bomber the shadow aircraft plants and aircraft engine plants and machine tool plants af Bristol, Birmingham and Canterbury they did use electronic beams to target the aircraft plants but did aim to destroy the roads, bridges, housing around the plant to knock it out of action so they weren't innocent. Having said that those bombers made in those plants were already bombing German cities and missing. -The reason the V2 was used against cities is because the Germans intended to create a counter terror so that they had leverage to negotiate the cessation of bombing of German cities. Thats why they were called 'reprisal weapons (vergeltungs waffen) sometimes translated as vengeance weapons.

    This narration is singularly unconvincing. Why does the narration give implicit credence to the supposed desire of the crew to escape Soviet captivity as a motive for the run to Argentina. Had the ship surrendered in Oslo they would would not have faced capture by the Soviets since the Russians never arrived in Norway. At the same time the ship disobeyed Doenitz's order for all u-boats to surface and surrender to the Allies, but it was not the only one to do so. U-530 also arrived in Mar del Plata before U-977 and U-235 was captured on its way to deliver enriched uranium to Japan. So, it seems unlikely that U-977's escape plan was solely the decision of its captain. Also, if I remember correctly, U-977 had an exceptionally large cargo capacity which was empty by the time it surrendered. Also, IRRC the captain refused to account for his course and provided no log book of his travels. Therefore, the significance of the voyage goes much beyond the supposedly "heroic" determination of the Nazi crew to remain free. Either this narrator is exceptionally incurious or he is determined to put the best possible gloss on a highly suspicious episode.

    • @Compressedhistory
      @Compressedhistory 19 дней назад

      Thank you for your comment and for engaging so thoughtfully with the content. You raise some important points often discussed. The narration aimed to provide a balanced view of the possible motivations behind the captain's decision, including the desire to avoid Soviet captivity, which, though speculative, is a theory that some historians have proposed. However, this complicates the narrative. Regarding the disobedience of Doenitz's orders, you're right to note that U-977 wasn't the only submarine to defy them, suggesting that the decision may not have been purely at the captain's discretion. The mention of the empty cargo capacity and the missing log book is indeed significant and adds to the mystery surrounding U-977's voyage. These factors certainly contribute to the suspicion that there was more to the story than what the official reports reveal. The intention wasn't to gloss over these aspects but to focus on one of the potential motivations discussed in historical accounts. Your input helps highlight the complexity of the situation, and I'll take it into account for future content to ensure a more comprehensive perspective is presented.

    Great video but just a little short , something that I don’t understand is why was it so difficult for the senior officers ( generals ) to understand that it was very possible for the Germans to get through the Hertugan forest when they already did it twice once in WW1 and again in WW2 when they (germans) advanced around the French defences and demolished the weak French forces in a little over 3 weeks, I guess it was too much for the senior officers to comprehend , it’s more difficult when they stick their heads up their asses , if it wasn’t for the real men being army soldiers and the air Bourne that held off the Germans till the weather cleared it would have been a real disaster.The credit goes to the ground troops and the junior officers , they were the real hero’s. The senior officers only showed up at the end to take all of the credit in front of the cameras and media .

But this is an interesting story - I never learned until this video about U - 977 and how its crew escaped to Argentina . Lucky for that crew to have had such a vehicle of escape . And I don’t blame them for not wanting to be captured by the Soviets .

      The story of the last voyage of this U Boot, allows for a rendenz vous near Spain, transfer of a high ranking NAZI or NAZIs to the sub and from there, to Argentina. The log book was missing, presumably tossed overboard before surrender. So the crew's stories could not be verified. The facts surrounding the voyage provides a field day and so many possibilities for novel writers writing about the last days of the War.
