Home Built Detroit Diesel Wheel Trencher - Cold Start and Working Hard
My son and I have a Buckeye 301 wheel trencher, built in Findley, Ohio, in the 1940,s. Still works ! Some parts available, if you search hard
Also known as "Independent boom" control and is a great feature to have, so much easier to run without haveing to take it out of swing or travel etc. Great video, not much Lima (BLH) equipment on You tube. Thanks for posting and Happy new year.
Nothing Better Than A 12 OZ Can Of Bill Cosby
Its a Speicher trencher
A buried utility locating device! But in all seriousness if you have a trench of the same width and in the range of depth, nothing can keep up with a wheel trencher.
Beautiful old machine, sounds sweet.
Brings back memories of getting "farmed out" when a teenager. Worked on one in what I thought was called the bullhead, down in the trench, after starting out originally as a "getr, tile guy supplying the bullhead with the old clay tiles. Went through a pair of gloves about every other day and my mom thought she was washing a mud ball of clothes. Those were the days, I'm 78 now.
if it still puts pipe in the ground, why stop.
My father wondered if the previous owner referenced in the video was austin taylor? if so he may have a bit more history on it...and thinks he may have run it at one point.
Yes it sounds like your Dad knows this machine, Austin Taylor is the previous owner. Maybe he can come out and talk to us for a follow-up video?

Nice to see a digger wheel running. Thank you for a nice video. I can tell you like that old girl and have spent some time together. You were not fumbling for any of the controls. I hope when you retire her, SHe finds someone like you who will love her as much.
@69dblcab thank you, appreciate these kind words sir!
@@vintageequipment3768 Merry Christmas. Stay warm and stay safe.
he is using the ether like he is starting a weed eater. an engine that size needs 2 cans being sprayed at the same time to get running
Nothing quite like a Detroit Diesel for converting fuel oil into noise. 😂
Amazing old iron. Bad shape? Starts immidiatelly. No clagging, no blue or white smoke. And this after so many hours in use. Impressive. Also that all these complex components still work together under harsch conditions with abrassive soil and sand...
Beautiful old rig n video too thankyou 👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Sounds like it runs great
I worked for a guy that had one about the same year ,it had a pony motor that he couldn't get parts for so he put a 4 cyl Ford motor from a pinto in it after a few months of setting the blade down on two chains at the end of the day and every morning we hook it up to 2 DM800 Mack's and tow start it,pulling on it lifted the blade,it usually started in 10 feet or less
Don't know where it sat all that time but it's amazing the windows aren't blown out
That machine is beautiful!!!!!!!
I worked on a wheel machine. It was work
Old GM/Detroit engine. Not bad shape either.
Ya gotta look for the bright spot... Better to blow the tire here than on the road! A great old machine. Great video, great footage. 👍
Out thoughts exactly!
Gostei da ferramenta bruta 😎🤝
Spent a summer running a tracked wheel ditch witch trencher, a lot of boredom watching that bucket wheel go round and round.lol the trencher always wanted to go left.why ??????
Follows magnetic earth field gravitation...
Brilliant video really enjoyable
Thank you! So glad people enjoy our videos!
Usen eather on a diesel is hard on then if you don't need to use it don't... Nice D9 cable blade ,they also built a D8 cable blade
First on of these I ever saw was an antique on out in the gathering systems outside Roswell NW. It was HUGE real HUGE and cit through that crumbled Caliche rock like butter. Man was that sucker loud. That was a hell of a job out in the oil patch.
Runs like a swiss top alright, What a pos this garbage is. cut it up and sell it to a scrap yard
Nice job 👍
I spent ,,my whole teen age years, on a Oliver track trencher, side seat, 3 miles of ditches, gas powered, good ol great days of my teenage years, early 20 s BigAl California, thanks
Just add some black pepper to the rad that will fix the leak :0 Great machine
that looks like fun. glad you are saving this old iron.
Wow this hit good content and pictures. That dog was neat. Sometimes people create amazing things just by doing.
I bet that D9 could pull a forty-foot wide, 4 deep disc setup.
I always idled mine down for awhile before shutting off

I HAVE FOUND CASE TRACTOR START A LOT EASIER WHEN COLD YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT ETHER
Haha!... I know, Right!... I SWEAR BY Starting Fluid!... I'm here in Pennsylvania.... All my Trucks, Heavy Equipment and Farm Equipment is OLD!... I buy Either BY THE CASE!... It is a NECESSITY!... Now if I have something with Glow Plugs, before I Spray it I will Disable them if they come on Automatically... And if they're on a Switch, I won't use them if I have to give it a Snoot Full to make it Start.... In 40 years of Trucking, Owning Heavy Equipment, and Farming I have NEVER had a problem!.... People think they're Experts because they are 25 years old and are making Payments on a New Diesel Pickup Truck!... That means they know it all, Right?... Hahah!
Absolutely fantastic vid & machinery
Thank you!
@@vintageequipment3768 your welcome

Excatly
D9 wasnt out yet in 1956, if,n i remember rite, it was 1958, but maybe 1957, & itsa pony motor, been around them ol cat,s for 50-52 years now, & i always herd em as pony motors
Never use it except as a last resort. I always find a way to heat things. You'd be surprised how much better they start if you heat the intake manifold and direct a torch into the intake, Best thing though is a block heater, they make propane powered ones you know. Even 1/2 an hour of running a block heater off a portable generator can make a world of difference
CAT D353 engine ! it is fitted with standard grouser pads.
