Race day vlogs from an everyday, middle of the pack runner. My name is Kush. I am a relatively new runner. I started couch to 5k in early 2021 and then let running consume my soul. Now I am wasting my time chasing the world marathon majors and buying running shoes I don't really need.

Great Birmingham Run Half Marathon 2023

My first half marathon of 2023 and first race ever with a Go Pro. I set out mainly to figure out where my current level of fitness was. As a benchmark, I tried to aim for 1:46:00 which is my PB from September 22 at The Big Half. I planned for a large negative split for this race so that I wouldn’t ruin myself in the first 20 minutes. The plan was to push in the second half if I could. Turns out...
thank you for the video. Is water easily accesible for those running at your pace?
be proud, brother! it’s a privilege to run.
Marathons are incredibly hard! Just by doing it you are already setting yourself apart from everyone else. The sub 4 will come with time. I would suggest salt tablets to help with the cramps, and slurping down a gu pouch every 30 minutes. That is what helped me when I finally ran a sub 4 in San Diego. Keep pushing! You will get there!
Dude, you ROCK!
Nice vid, how did you find the weather? 2 years in a row its ended up terrible for runners
I got a bit cold at the start line when it rained but felt alright once we started running. Personally I’m ok running in the rain but have quite poor heat tolerance.
Its always a great race to do. I was just up the road with a 1.46 carry a few issues so just pleased to finish. 3 weeks before your marathon id of maybe pushed the pace a bit more to a threshold effort so come your marathon your marathon pace would feel easier. Same with the half marathon a good 10k effort 3 weeks before is always a good workout going in to a race. Good luck with the marathon though its a great experience you will be talking about for months afterwards. Remember just getting to the start line is an accomplishment no matter what the time says at the end.
Congratulations on your finish and hope no long term damage!
Great running. Im already in for next year 💪👌
Amazing! I would definitely love to run this again, hopefully on a drier day.
Great video Kush and great running 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching your race too fake Pete.
Congrats Kush!
Just getting into both races is a feat in itself.
Hi. Congratulations. 🎉 I actually started in the same wave and corral. Do you maybe have any raw footage that you are willing to share where I might find me? Just for my personal use, of course. Thanks for your help. Best.
Sure. If you send me a DM on instagram (@run.with.kush) with your email, I can put whatever I have from the corrals in a Google drive folder for you.
Congratulations... keep on running, you now know what you have to do better in training and nutrition, I'm 100% sure that you will reach your goal to finish under 4 hours at the next marathon. 👍👍👍
nice run
I was there too! Also CONGRATS!!! Your reason for starting marathon running made me so happy and I love all the heart and soul you have put into this race and your running!
I came across your video as I've been watching NYC Marathon vlogs this past week. This is amazing! I hope to be there next year. Like you, I'm a relatively new runner. Started January 2022. Did my first 10k Nov 2022 and then kept going to do a Half Marathon in January 2023! It was the most exhilarating moment to finish that half!!! I went on to do 2 virtual half marathons. Now doing another half marathon in Jan 2024 (pushing for a better time) and really hoping to be in NYC for my first full marathon next year. Watching your video really encourages me, I've been watching so many lately and it really helps to see other's experiences. Congratulations on completing both Chicago and NYC! That's amazing. How did you handle the cramping? Salts, gels? What helped you?
That’s an amazing progression. NYC energy is unmatched. I hope you get to run it soon. I think I cramped less and later in NY mainly because I was putting a lot less effort in as I was completely tired. I’m yet to figure out how to avoid it. Probably just run more and strength training. Weird thing is I cramped very little in my first marathon and it’s the best one I’ve run to date in terms of being able to hold a goal pace till the end.
Interesting how that happens, that you didn't cramp on your first but have since. Hopefully you get to sort it out. Thank you for you reply. Found out a parent in one of my kids' class ran it this year and said the same thing, the NYC energy is unmatched. I look forward to it. @@RunwithKush
Congratulations I am very happy for you I am one step away to qualify for 2024 Well done amigo.
Well done Kush! 2 marathons in 4 weeks is not an easy feat. Completing them both is an amazing achievement a lot of people can only dream of having the opportunity as a once in a lifetime box!
Thank you El Capitan!
Awsome,,, Marathon running is Desire or Reason,,, NYC Marathon was the best time of my life when i ran,,,,Keep running
Well done. Great effort, super attitude. Spot on. Well done! Thanks for letting us tag along.
Great job!! Your videos are a huge inspiration to me!
That is quite flattering. Happy running!
Woow mad respect for your honest marathon experience 👌. Time isn't everything, even 4h30min would be still good. Remember it is one hell of a distance and most people will never run a marathon in their life. I can tell you one thing, with some dedication and more long distance experience you can take at least one half hour of. But give it time, like 2 years and 5 marathons later. I did 16 marathons in the last 4 year and could take almost an hour of my first marathon where it felt also like hell for me. And how older you are getting the better you can handle the marathon beast , and i don't mean time but dosing your power and dealing with the pain that comes with handling "the marathon beast" 😎. Keep up the good runs bro 💪
Thanks for sharing I had similar experience in Amsterdam where I hoped for 3.45 to beat my London time in April. The lack of long runs hit me at 15 miles and downhill from there. I hope to run Chicago in 2024 and have a robust plan which I will implement in April.
There is lots to admire in your effort and attitude. Well done. You offer a great comment too: "The marathon doesn't give a Sh!t for your plans." I hope your Stoicism carried you though. Bravo! I look forward to more of your videos.
Great effort my man ! Still a fantastic time. Keep your head up ! You got the next race !
Thanks for the view down chicago marathon. While cycling an old man told me that chocolate milk helps prevent cramps, perhaps you might want to look into it.
Great effort vanja babu keep movig you can do it🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Thank you Maiju!
Great run, I did 4:38 last year after training didn’t go well with lumbar hamstring injuries. Did the last 13 miles with 13:30-14:00 pace per mile.
All that matters is that you went for it and you still completed a world major marathon! Super inspired by your effort, I’m running Indianapolis in less than two weeks and this video just got me hyped. Thanks for sharing 👊🏾
Well done. Keep at it and you'll get there. Miles over time. I wasn't sure I'd ever run sub-4 after my first -- a 4h49m sufferfest -- but ran 3h15m three years later. Consistent weekly mileage is the key. BTW, my third marathon was 4 hours and 3 seconds! I won the heartbreak prize which was actually quite nice. 3:59:56 on my watch, but no chip time at the small race. I thought I'd make it until I saw the finish clock and realized my error.
Congratulations! There are two kinds of people: Those of us who are runners and completely understand the work and dedication that goes into marathon training and racing and celebrate you for your wonderful accomplishment...and non runners who may not even know how long a marathon is but will likely understand it takes a lot of work and dedication and will celebrate you for your wonderful accomplishment!
Well said!
Nice work. Did you use the Garmin race predictor by chance? Curious what it said if so before the race.
It was around 3:45:00. It’s quite accurate for me up to half marathon distance.
@@RunwithKushoof, mine says 3:55. I think I’ll still give it a shot, but experiences seem to vary. Do you also use the HRM pro?
Give it a go. I definitely underperformed on the day. I ran a 4:00:44 and 4:01:57 in 2022. At that time the Garmin prediction was around 4:15:00. I hope you crack it. Good luck.
Great work! We started in the same corral and had the same goal. I haven't hit a sub 4 yet and I have a few more times to try, with NYC and London. We finished around the same time too! Must have just missed you!! I'll be following along to see you hit that sub 4!!!!!!
You ran the gamit of emotions but your a winner for crossing the finish line, thank you for taking us on your journey
Congrats bro! Next time, you will do it in sub 4 hours, you just have to continue what you are doing💪 On Sunday I ran my first marathon and I'm 15. I docummented everything: my trainings, the marathon and the obstacles I had and I'm going to post a video about it like you did!
Guess who is your 69th Subscriber😏 I really enjoyed your video, I subscribed to watch your future content!
Thank you my friend. NYC marathon in 3 weeks if all goes well.
@@RunwithKush So, Good Luck!Since you gave me a lot of story-building ideas, I would be very happy if you watched my marathon video too, which I'm going to post.
I ran chicago aimming for 4hr too. Got cramp on 8mile so i changed to 5hr goal instead lol turning it into city run -_- but nevertheless very good atmosphere and fun! We all got two free beers + medal equally no matter the time.
We all have different bodies and experiences so please take my comment as just an anecdote which may or may not apply to you because I am no armchair doctor. I had several issues with cramping, and besides supplementation and electrolytes (the usual stuff really) I did a couple targeted sport massages and felt my calf loosen ever since. Even my plantar pain is now more manageable. Planting a seed here but again, you know your body best. Good luck for the next marathon, you'll crush it because you have the best attitude
You said you drank water and took salt tabs, did you take gels?
Took 7 sis gels
@@RunwithKush oh okay good. Youll crush your next one in 4 weeks! Im chasing sub 4 too. I try again in march
Hi! I also tried to hit the sub 4 hour, until mile 20 everything was on track, but after the cramping started, and I finished 4:09:06 in Chicago too. This was my 10+ marathon, evert time we can learn something from it. Just go and run, and have fun!
Sorry you missed your time goal. But hopefully you enjoyed the race nonetheless. Thank you for the encouragement.
Perhaps less talking and holding a camera will help you reach sub 4.
Well done, I finished right behind you, took me 5 attempts to go sub 4. Keep trying but most of all enjoy the process
Does your pod register on your watch, or phone ?
It’s connected to the watch. But also has an app which gets data from the watch.
@11:28 you csn hear Kofuzi cheer on someone!
Fantastic job!!
Man, totally feel you as I had the same goals and experience last marathon. Sucks to watch the goals slips away, but when a cramp comes back and brings its family and friends along with it, there's little we can do! Well done on finishing (you could have quitted but didn't, so that's something), and best of luck next time!
I know it wasn’t the time you wanted, but you grinded out a finish! I was there too, and agree that the course was extremely congested and it was difficult to avoid weaving. Onward and upward!
What screen are you using on your watch to see the exact predicted finish time?
It’s called Race screen and it’s free on Garmin Connect
Highly recommend sodium loading in the days before the marathon while hydrating but also getting in lots of sodium during the race to help with the cramps
I ran in the F corral too so I was totally looking for myself in your video at the start line haha. I found the same thing in regards to it being congested. But I was put in the wrong corral. I should have been in C or D. Still finished with a 3:31! Congrats on a great run!! 🎉
Great job. Not what you wanted, but it happens. I think you're right if you up your mileage it will help you on your next one. Congrats again!!
Great video and congrats! My calves were cramping a lot after longer runs. I did some PT (dry needling) and started wearing compression sleeves on them. I also started wearing shoes with a higher drop (at least 8mm) and that really seemed to help.
