Death & Burial in Ancient Greece | Greek Archaeology Episode 22
In this finale episode, I'm covering an aspect of Greek religious culture that has gotten a lot of attention in recent years; the archaeology of death and burial. I will primarily focus on funerals and burial customs while referring to Arnold Van Gennep's tripartite theory of liminality and rites of passage, with reference to Prothesis, Ekphora & Internment.
I will also explore the iconic Shaft Graves at Mycenae to help us understand early Mycenaean society, power dynamics, and the significance of the rich child burials. I conclude with a discussion of analyzing ancient DNA and isotopic data, and how these methods help us understand diet, social status, and migration patterns.

This week I discuss what archaeology can tell us about how democracy was practiced in ancient Athens, its origins and social implications. By comparing and contrasting how Athenian democracy functioned, where free citizens held direct power through institutions like the Ekklesia, Boule, and Areopagus, we can also explore the unique governance of Sparta, characterized by its dual kingship, Gerou...

This week I'm back talking about the nature of power & equality in the ancient Greek world. While Athens is often cited as the forerunner of democracy, Greece had numerous power dynamics that can be seen in the archaeological record, all of which came with their own consequences. Here I chart the different power structures and political models from Minoan egalitarianism, the Mycenaean Wanax to ...

As we explore the theme of multiculturalism and interconnectivity in the Aegean world more, it is inevitable that I discuss the Phoenicians. These enigmatic Levantine people have suffered under the caricatures that Homer painted of them as maritime trinket traders, a view that remained popular even into the early 21st century. In this episode I unpack what we know of the Phoenicians: who they w...

Having finished a chronological overview, I'm turning to a more thematic approach in this series. In this episode I discuss the topic of multiculturalism and diversity in the ancient Greek world, but most of all the sheer interconnectivity of it. The Greek world in its totality spread from the South East coast of Iberia to regions beyond the Black Sea and even to Afghanistan. I touch of the Aeg...
Religious and Cultural Reform in Roman Greece | Greek Archaeology Episode 13

As we reach the end of the Hellenistic Period, and the decline of the Successor Kingdoms, the new power of the Romans rose in the West, eventually subsuming Greece under the Roman provincial name of Achaia. Prior to that though, I want to explore the interaction between Late Hellenistic kingdoms and indigenous Eastern communities, and what that can tell us about ideas of "Greekness". Notably, s...

Using case studies like Lofkënd & Pella I give an overview of t...
