What type of resin are you using for gas tanks? I planned to use two 3 gallon Scepter plastic tanks that I bought from Academy because they're only six inches high and fit nicely under my rear deck. But.....here's the problem with those tanks. When I put fuel in them, the pressure built up and caused the tanks to swell and expand. Now they no longer fit under my rear deck, so I'm going to have to build custom tanks. I'm thinking about making fiberglass tanks or some sort of aluminum/fiberglass hybrid. Any advice on type of resin to use so that it's fuel resistant would be appreciated.
Little late now but I think if you sprayed a small amount of water before laying plastic, the water would make the plastic stick in place much better.
Nice! what do you recommend for E85 epoxy or resin ?
Thank you Harry to share your knowledge. Appreciate a lot.
why travera fabric versus fiberglass?
Harry i was taught that clear resin lime mini craft was the best. Why do you use this resin?
Surprised the resin is so dark.
Most excellent video. Thank you for sharing this information.
I would love to spend a day in your workshop...
Do you have to use a special resin for fiberglass to hold has without breaking down?
Good
It looks like vinyl ester resin is best for tanks as alcohol eats everything else. Do you find this to be true? I hate to buy a special resin for a small outboard tank (vintage tank is not available now). Is there a coating that can line a polyester tank to protect it from fuel additives? What are your thoughts?
Whats your process for the hull? Are those from moulds
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CANT MAKE OR FABRICATE ? 😊
I enjoy how much I learn from your videos, keep the videos coming:)
What wonderful way to learn boats ! Thanks for your love of the water, fishing and boat building
Great stuff! Did you use polyester resin for the tank?
How much resin did this project take? And what weight of mat did you use?
Love this video! Very helpful, thank you
Harry! Thanks for the memories! I grew up in Lakeland. First job out of college was working for Alpha Resins in sales. But to get to the selling of marine resin I spent a year learning how to make resin and how to make adjustments in the field to 40,000 gallons at the customers facility. Next they sent me to Wellcraft in Sarasota to learn how to make boats for 2 months. (That was cruel. They put me on the Scarab lines. What a beautiful boat!) After that, and the promise I’d get to work in Florida and South Georgia calling on boat manufacturers, they shipped me to the Midwest and I sold resin in OK, AR, MO, and KS. Ranger, Champion, Cobalt, a Bayliner plant and Co-Plas Gelcoats were my biggest accounts. Haven’t rolled out resin now is 40 years. I’ve had two Gheenoe’s since I was 15 years old. I wasn’t familiar with your boats or I would’ve bought one. You’re making EXACTLY what I’ve been working on with my “15’ 6” Classic. (Making it a Flats Boats) I needed to find a project while dealing with Stage 4 throat cancer. No real pain involved with the tumor, but the radiation and chemo after 5 weeks beats the crap out of your body, you lose muscle mass, and energy and stamina goes bye-bye. Long story short- I love what you’re doing, your boat is exactly what I want when I’m red fishing in Brusnswick, GA or the Florida Intercoastal, or in the Everglades. Hope to meet you one day.

Need more beer....
I've been looking for a way to build a custom low profile fuel tank for my project boat and this is it!!! I'm using 100% epoxy resin to build the tank. It will be removable like yours. 100% epoxy resin over 1708 . Sound like a plan or am I missing something?
Very nice ...how many layers did you use to seal the top ?
Hey Harry, nice setup there. When you put on the wider cap in the middle of the boat do you need some sort of support underneeth?
Who makes the “B39” bonding agent
the company is called “Scott Bader”. the product is called “Crestafix Poly-Bond B39”
I was wondering about that glue myself, good thing I wanted to see this section hoping someone else was also trying to find out😊
That 10 ounce cloth made a really nice finish
Beer is good
Harry, I used to be an aircraft composite guy. For cleaning up radiused inside corners I always used the teardrop and ball shaped grinding stones. I kept a bunch of different sizes on hand. When they would get gummed up I would just run them against a piece of cinder block.
Wished someone would show let me explain it. I am building a pontoon catamaran style little flat deck type boat my big boat was stolen I’m saving up for down payment so I wanted something to get me across a couple big ship channels on texas coast tried floating in a tube but two bulk shark encounters Charteruse fed my mind 1/4 way thru it and at 59 years old didn’t feel like loosing a limb So my little boat I didn’t even consider my problem I would run into. My deck is 4 1/2’ x 5 5 1/2, I hv 2 pontoon/sponson, one each side under edge of my deck it’s bolted down to pontoon about 12” down each side of deck w/3/8” bolts. But when I stand bost on the edges line in the water the hulls fokd inwards or outwards abs eventually gonna rip the wood from bolts holding deck to pontoons. So I had a piece of hardwood solid one piece cut 2” x 2” x 4’ long putting 3 of those equally i front behind and middle of deck area, plus bigger one piece braces. My problem is holding the 2”x2” brace in one spot permetly. So I screwed a 3” x 3” to 2x2, then screwed a 6” x 6” to 3x3 more area to bond to inside of hull. So do I take abs kayer around the 6x6 a d 3x3 several layers then mix up some resin ek micro balloons silica and silica thickener a d smear around hull abs end of brace and kind of make like a Big radius up the 2x2 o reign. Racing abs everytbing for solid support I know I hv everyone confused only by a drawing or showing what I need to do oh well
Fucking totally Awsome, I’m half way done with my little boat, but just watching this video fir 10 mnts I learned 5 new ways bd tricks I didn’t know before. I fight my glass more than anything you didn’t fight it at all will start laying abs cutting diagonally how cool thanks can you come spend the weekend with me and think I could learn a craps’s of bid you could use experienced help free room available food and beer bro
What do you use to glue the cap down
Do you have a video showing how to make a good prep table
Where do I buy that aluminium plate?
Can't believe you grind all this poison mask less??¿????????
I’ve been looking for a video like this everywhere!!
Nice never knew how that was done I need to own one of these skiff someday
G'day can you gelcoat over gelcoat ?
I can never understand how people smoke everyday of their lives to be 100 or work with sanding fiberglass with no mask but live healthy lives. Awesome video. Thanks for this great idea!
God bless you too for sharing your knowledge. From this world we only take the love we sow
so you say you got skiff kits available to purchase, but in this video you’re using a mold to make the hull. how do we build the hull?
Man you make this look easy but it really is not
How did you use this fiber glass with no long sleeves please let me know I alway itch from the fiberglass I have to know your secret.😊
Holy cow! That trick with the 10 oz. cloth is super helpful. Thanks!
Is that balsa core you put in the bottom? Those little squares?
for those with a scale, weigh the resin prior to mixing, calculate the total amount of catalyst. weigh the putty after mixing and divide the total catalyst by the weight of the mixed putty. this will give you a % catalyst to use. then life is simple. put 1000g of putty in a cup, add 13.5g of mekp. (example) when its hot, you bump the % down, and when its cold, bump it up a tad. harry makes wonderful boats and is a blessing to the skiff/fishing communities.
why would you use fiberglass for a fuel tank and not welded aluminum or stainless steel? I would always go with aluminum for modern fuel. Weld it up and then set it in some type of foam or resin cradle. I admit, I have never made a fiberglass fuel tank, but it just seems to me that the polyester resin would be dissolved eventually in the gasoline? especially the modern fuel mixes.
Good job. I don’t think breathing glass fibers is a good idea but it’s his lungs.
I am thinking use this method to make a gasoline tank under cockpit floor. Can it be done for gasoline?
Hey harry…I’m in the process with a skiff rebuild. I am so glad to have found your channel. It has helped a lot. Question about gas tank. How do you secure it when on the water? Is it just set underneath the deck? I guess a portable gas tank is “free floating” as well. Just trying to plan this out and have it make sense in my head.
Make L shaped tabs and glue them to the deck. That will keep your tank in place.
