When the prospective in laws act out in a negative manner when told their child is in a relationship with someone who was raised in a single parent household it shows their bias against anything beyond the acceptable societal norms. Author is a bit weak on police procedurals.

FYI to the AI curator - English-speaking audiences unfamiliar with seiza aren't going to understand what it is or why it is used. Seiza (for the comment readers) is a type of sitting on your shins with your toes pointed behind you, with your behind on your feet and the big toes crossed in a specific way. (The wiki article explains it better than I can.) It is extremely uncomfortable even for a short period, and subjecting a child to seiza for hours at a time is IMO criminal. Seiza is supposed to be a polite way of sitting on the floor, and when combined with a bowed posture, is usually done when someone is trying to beg something of someone, whether a favor or forgiveness etc. But it is definitely not a part of most Western cultures, and again, unless your audience is a bunch of manga- and anime-lovers, they won't even know what it is.
