I suspect the supply is drying up. The price has tripled and more since I bought mine. It's still worth these higher prices, but those who can't afford one might settle for a Neo (not Neo 2) with almost the same feature set or even the Alphasmart 3000. I owned the latter at one time. The experience is much the same, it just can't hold as much text. You might also call the elementary and middle schools in your community. They might have one or more in the back of some closet they'd be happy to give you.

I think the connection cord for all the alphasmarts are the same as a printer cable. You can buy them anywhere.
