Friends of the Koala

At Friends of the Koala, we believe in a future for koalas in the NSW Northern Rivers.
Operating for over 35 years, we have an established history of working towards positive outcomes for koalas. Not only do we rescue, rehabilitate and release sick and injured koalas, we restore and enhance their habitat, educate the community, advocate on their behalf and assist with relevant research.
We maintain a 24/7 Rescue Hotline and operate a Koala Hospital, Community Nursery and Community Education and Administration Centre at our site in East Lismore, NSW.
Each year on average, Friends of the Koala tend to 400 sick, injured, and orphaned koalas, which is approximately 50% of all wild koalas rescued in NSW.

Hobi recently spent time in with our three resident koalas - Ivy, Charlotte and Polar Star. He loved the extra space to run around. Charlotte was particularly besotted with him! Hobi came to Friends of the Koala as a very small and vulnerable joey and at times it didn't look like he would make it - but with treatment and care from the vets and carers he is doing really well!

Some more footage from Brad Mustow of Jaxson getting an absolute soaking in the rain. Koalas look so damn cute, you would just want to wrap him up warm - he wouldn't thank you for it though! Koalas are wild, have long claws, sharp teeth and can inflict pain! We can admire his cuteness from afar - he is handsome!!

We had a very wet start to October here in the Northern Rivers. One of our local residents - Jaxson as spotted by our volunteer photographer Brad. The rain came and it was heavy. You can see Jaxson curled up in a little ball to keep warm and dry with his back to the rain. Did you know that the fur on the back of a koala is waterproof?

I don’t think there is anybody who does not think Koalas are beautiful and cute, and yet we can still cut down their habitat or hit them in fast driving cars, or many other horrible ways. As the smartest primates we are very F..k.ng stupid and really don’t give a shit about our beautiful native wildlife. That is except for organisations like Friends of the Koala or Loan Pine and many others. There is good, but more bad, so get your act together you bad people, PLEASE, for Australia’s beautiful wildlife’s sake.

Stand there filming while the poor creature struggles ? Despicable.
This poor little fellow should not have to wander through dangerous areas searching for the things he needs. It's not only the increasing urbanisation but the fracturing of the animals' homeland territories. It beggars belief that despite increasing demand for housing, councils and governments seem incapable of maintaining wildlife corridors of scientifically proven sustainable structure. Surely we can all understand the notion that beggars can't be choosers, and it is well and truly past the point of the Real Estate developers calling the shots. Moreover, perhaps if farm land were not turned into urban sprawl or industrial districts, and if all farmers were prosecuted when they clear wildlife habitat rather than rehabilitate already cleared land, the koalas and other wildlife would not been found disoriented and searching for secure cover and food. Of course, all that relies not only on farmers and Tanya Plibersek, it relies on the Nationals and Liberals, and all other stake holders in positions of power choosing to be good Australians acting in good faith. Even people who think they are doing the right thing by participating in carbon off-setting programs rarely seem to make sure that they are investing in genuinely Australian enterprises that invest 100% of the funds into rehabilitation of suitable lands to support sustainably Australian wildlife.
