I haven't been to Bangkok or Rio, but I have to the other 3 cities. Dubai: Agree. It's underwhelming and there's nothing to do. Paris: Completely disagree. The key is to get off the touristy BS and find the real soul of the city. The food and wine, nightlife, the not-so-well-known architecture and streets, Parisian girls, etc. Get off the beaten path and see what the locals see and it'll be a great experience. Go touristy and you'll be disappointed. You did the latter. Adjust your thinking next time. NYC: Completely disagree. I spent two days just walking NYC, looking at the skyscrapers, researching and eating the local foods that were quite cheap and tasty (i.e. NY pizza, Times Square Shwarma), and I didn't find the locals rude, in fact I was getting hit on by a lot of girls. It was an incredible experience. I think basically you need to travel not as a tourist but as a local, do your research and get to the heart and soul of the city, understand the culture and vibe with it, and be friendly, and you will find that your experience will be usually quite pleasant. If you travel like a tourist expecting the place to be like where you come from, then you'll be disappointed. Need an open mind to enjoy traveling.

I haven't been to Dubai yet, but I'd imagine I'd hate it just like you! Haha. Seems a souless playground for the rich.
