    Worked as a therapist for nearly 25 years. I first read the Myth of Mental Illness 20 years ago and attempted to discuss this with other therapists, which was not productive. It is a myth that perpetuates the misery of patients and their families. I have incorporated this theory as much as possible. The point is people do suffer, but not for the reasons they think.

    Psych means soul. The soul is the conscience, consciousness and the will all non physical that controls the physical. The mind controls the body not the other way around (hierarchy). Disease is disturbed ease, a lack of peace...a violation of the conscience leading to fear (fear of punishment) leading to anger and rage.

    It's adaptation. Some ppls nature, identity, experience of the environment they're in is counter productive at that given time with the knowledge they have or lack. I don't believe in society, it's values and norms in the same way it's fed back to me. Therefore there is a higher chance I won't adapt and live a life worth sustaining. This is just evolution, throughout human history we have always had ppl that are highly incompatible, that cannot fit in and be a part of society in a useful way. Depression is the current heresey to society, it experiences this collective behaviour of society as pointless, tedious, silly. So society, instead of acknowledging that there is truth to this it renders the depressed as mad, crazy, weird, like all heretics to social structures of the past.

The audio book is only 8 and would listen to the audiobook instead where as If it was 1/2 as long and a tighter discussion and summary it Would be a go to for people who want to glean the ideas rather than as a follow up after reading I imagine the latter is tone target audience ? I agree with a great deal of what the book expresses and a lot of your (book review) points are profound and do a great deal of justice in exploring the nuances in the main ideas / philosophies impacting our world and the current trajectory the west appears to be on, moving closer towards authoritarian governance under the disguise of the common good. I do not support collectovist ideologies like far left or far right socialism (communism and fascism). I do however have concern when the term nanny state is used to describe some aspects of western countries for example; a welfare system to support those out of work / ill / single mothers; & also, if a person feels uncomfortable when spoken to by someone, it definately is useful to explore within why they are feeling triggered, and taking responsibility for their own self care and healing, that said, certain toxic environments and behaviours could make even a secure person feel uncomfortable (spoken to in a condescending/rude manner, or by someone who is projecting their own shadow that they don't like onto someone else). At an individual level and societal level, we would go a long way reducing some of the toxic cycles we continue to produce / contribute towards, and be more aware of what is unnecessarily harmful. When we claim someone is just being a victim, we might just be deflecting our own poor behaviour. And with regard when people say the number of single mothers (house holds with no fathers) is contributed to because they can get additional welfare for each child they bare.... So what is alternative, what is to happen to the children who do not have a choice, and are born in a fatherless household... Are the people against welfare, so self righteous to believe it is acceptable for the children to starve, in order to deter other fatherless families. We pay taxes not just for our roads to be built, and armies to defend us, but, to also aid those in need, as we ourselves never know when we might be the ones temporarily down and out and at least have that to fall back onto, and a chance to pick ourselves back up. Those in the west who believe everyone should take full account of their lives and full responsibility with zero support, perhaps can choose to live in a third world country and see what happens when everyone is left to fend for themselves. Sure... people might even be happier in those countries, as their culture and values see them embracing life and everything they have... But what of the countless who suffer needlessly and have no basic priveldges that we in the west take for granted, like food, water and shelter. There is no simple answer, but let's not throw away all the aspects that are considered to label us a nanny state, and let's not ignore the impact our behavior can have on others (prime example of toxic environment and culture inflicted onto people... Corporate Narcassism).... Perhaps it too far a field from how we first evolved as tribal people who had people around them that honoured and respected them, and other peoples welfare impacted the entirity of the group. Doesn't mean we can't still take responsibly for our lives and be the best version of our selves and nurture our individualism.

    We need people teaching the public how politics determines or dictates every aspect of our lives. A person's opinions or view of importance of facts does not determine the impact of our built world. Denial or dismissal of facts does not change the facts. We need to teach people to care, reject callous or limited mentality, increase openness, understand how everything is connected, and harming our neighbor is harming ourselves. Any person's rights denied is an effort for everyone's rights denied, it doesn't matter the superfluous "reasons". Everyone plays a role in this world and accountability for the world we create is critical. Bigotry, classism, and hierarchies disempower the masses therefore must be rejected to elevate our ethical standards.

      @@wisewordsbooksummaries perhaps down the track, as you are doing a great job in showcasing the motivation beneath the behavior of leaders who either do not have the best interests at heart &/or are influenced by outside factors &/or the nature of the role itself... A individual antidote to help stay on the line, is Jocko Willink perspective on leadership - BOOK The Dichotomy of Leadership, and how whether, bottom up, or top down, the values and principles of a single person can influence the group dynamic, as well as the trade offs and sacrifices one might have to make along the way, to better ensure their chances of attaining such a postion, and maintain their positive overall influence

    Nationalism can also go the other way, for example during the soviet era, the true history of my country was suppressed, its struggles, its accomplishments, the small and large victories that defined us as a people could finally be spoken openly, once we finally won our freedom.

    I am left to wonder, with regard to absolute rules is it appropriate to never want to stoop to the level of, or actually become like your enemy... the very thing you are standing up against, in particular to never violate human rights or commit war crimes

    • @wisewordsbooksummaries
      @wisewordsbooksummaries 10 месяцев назад

      The challenge with absolute rules lies in their intangibility-they are essentially societal constructs dependent on collective belief. When confronted with tangible threats to survival and reproductive success, these constructs often fall through. Although we should aspire to rise above and not descend to the level of others (especially our enemies), the reality is that when one's very existence is at stake, the dynamics can swiftly shift.

    • @Adam-nk4oj
      @Adam-nk4oj 10 месяцев назад

      @@wisewordsbooksummaries @wisewordsbooksummaries what I like about your podcast, full of insightful perspectives. Thank you for sharing yours, and yes, it is a challenge, and the ability to swiftly adapt is vital. If I may add, to expand from my own perception and values... I understand the dynamics can change when the threat is absolute.... So to then guarantee ones own existence, would require a response to be absulute in its retaliation... for example, if an opposing country carried out a first nuclear strike, as horrible as that would be... you must retaliate with the might of your own nuclear arsinal... This creates the dynamic of mutually assured destruction, and this, in of it self becomes a mechanism to ensure long lasting peace between states. Beyond that, our rules of engagement, respecting civilian/prisoners of war lives, the Geneva Convention... provide constraints that do not make circumstances any easier to defend oneself with, however, conducting ourselves in an honourable manner, is paramount regardless. Do not lose your humanity when fighting for humanities sake. It will take moral courage to maintain, however, do not underestimate it's desicive effect, for when the, 'how and why' is enshrined in truth... defeat is not an option. In every war, it is likely that both sides did their wrongs to escalate things, two wrongs however, do not make a right. Everyone can use the excuse it was for their own survival... For EG what they did ETC... Rise above the justification for conducting atrocities of your own. Otherwise you end up contributing to a cycle of mass expulsion, rape, murder and genocide. Let's not be the cause of a single person's suffering this way.

      That's a great point! I found that "Atomic Habits" is a fantastic introductory book for understanding the power of habits due to its simplicity and practicality. However, it doesn't delve into the science behind habits. Whereas, "Good Habits Bad Habits" provides a deeper insight into the biological reasons behind how and why habits work, which allows readers to better customise their habit-building strategies for success.
