Great tutorial very informative and simple (in a good way)! Thank you for staying on subject and no intrusive background music. ❤
Brilliant video, I'm going to make a copper foil in oil cap, but I'll have to experiment a bit, I need to make a 0.22uf cap, the hardest part is, how to calculate how long the foil needs to be🤔
Great video
I am the Amek Big 28 buyer. I spent a few hours in the studio and can safely say it would be a pleasure tracking, mixing, and doing work of any kind in this studio. Mike is a beast!
Thanks for the kind words, Adam!
Thanks for the video. Currently trying to find a way to modernize/repair an old power supply for a mixing console that has been discontinued. Do you (or do you know of) any experts who offer this type of service?
Please send an email to me, preferably with details on what console and power supply you have and where you are located. Pictures could help.
Fantastic tutorial video! I am considering going back to the future LOL and purchasing a Langley Recall with fully functioning Supertrue software. You have answered many many questions thanks so much! Cheers 🇨🇦
Your love towards your gear and methods is inspiring! Thnx!
I have recently been gifted a Seco model 88 tube tester and have found it to be an extremely useful tool for evaluating vintage 12Ax7, 12Au7 , and a lot of 6L6 GC and even EL 34's that I have purchased. And lots of others too. I had to replace the "Load" potentiometer on this unit as the detents allowed the knob to rotate indefinitely . I found and bought a Vintage CTS 1K pot.( large format, I mean this thing is a real antique)) from a similar tester and had it shipped all the way from South Korea to Olde Cape Cod. And then installed it in my tester. Can I believe the results I see with this tool ? Or does it need to be somehow calibrated?
I had to calibrate both of my tube testers. I have the one from that vid and a much nicer Hickock. Both have service manuals that explain calibration procedures.
Sick Meyer EQ! Amek consoles are awesome! I have a 56 channel Recall That is loaded with all Neve modules. People that grow up mixing ITB have no idea what they are missing.
Right on
Dude! Sick content!! Instant sub. Definitely want to see a Fairchild Deesser video! Didnt even know that existed
Thank you! It’s definitely not a DeEsser though. Maybe a better description would be transient limiter. It’s really interesting.
Love the channel! I have a Amek Rembrandt Console. Do you ever get any white noise from your console on mix down? Assuming you print from the console
Thanks! No noise here. Having been fully rebuilt with the best parts I could get definitely helps to keep the noise floor down. The audio for this video was mixed on it, as is every project I work on.
this rules. thanks for the tour
Really nice studio I’m very impressed with your electronic background which has most definitely helped you to maintain your studio equipment as well as being able to electronically tweek a lot of your outboard gear big up yourself man I wish you was here in the uk. ✊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾😎
Thanks so much for this comment. I appreciate that very much. Thank you for watching! ❤️
Hey nice content on your channel SUBBED 🤟
Thanks very much!
Nice setup, really cool space!!!
Thanks very much!
Any mixer is better than itb
Nice setup. That Amek Console is one of my favorites. All the best.
@8:43 you show a processor and tell us it's your favorite but you never identify what it is and the lighting is too dark to even see it.
Eclipse from Eventide
Impressive
hey!!just bought this board and want to get to the battery before the disaster happened, can you please describe-how?
It’s under the Big 3 module on the CPU card. Be super careful handling the CPU card and working on it. If that card dies you will have a boat anchor instead of a mixing board.
@@LightningBoyAudio You sound just like Dave)
I know from experience. I successfully repaired one dead CPU card. I failed with 3 others.
@@LightningBoyAudio So I’m not a tech, the console is in-front of me, should I open the master section and check the battery? Is it a difficult procedure?
Do it with the console off. There are two screws that hold the CPU card in place. You could potentially leave the card installed and just snip off the battery with a good sharp pair of wire cutters.
Hey Mike, can I ask you a question about the BIG?
Sure, but email is probably best if it’s a “big” question.
Now I know what a tube Dr looks like.
Man, I wanted to start a channel like this, now I don’t have to! 😆This side of audio engineering is fading faster than I thought, few have any interest in understanding the nuts and bolts of our tools.
Would you consider a diy kit option down the road?
Not for this, but possibly something else.
@@LightningBoyAudio Maybe a kit to make something like the 23Fe in Colour card format?
Sorry, I’m not familiar with that format.
@@LightningBoyAudio DIYRE created the Colour format. Several manufacturers offer module pre- built or as kits. Just look up DIYRE Colour to learn about it.
@@sparella that’s a freaking sweet idea!Obviously, it would need to be advantageous. @LightningBoyAudio Colour card format is a DIYRE format.
This is just awesome. I have a 501 by Langley, it looks exactly like your desk. Has these DYN lights and Im so curious about this software and Showtime which was also some kind of digital control for these consoles. Did you make the COM cable yourself?
Yes, I made the cable.
Great mic pre, happy to have a pair
Glad you like them! Thanks, Kevin :)
Moving Coil pickups are richer. No doubt. Mike, can you give us an idea of how much this would cost to build from scratch? A range?
If you do it all yourself (amplifiers included), maybe about $1.5k-3k in materials. It’s the huge amount of labor that could make it about $10k-12k as a commissioned work.
@@LightningBoyAudio Have you heard about or experimented with other materials for the plate? For instance, something that doesn't rust / tarnish over time? BTW, this was some years ago - how are you liking your mods still?
Glad I stumbled upon this video! Did you not run into any noise issues with the switching PSUs because of the robust filtering section?
No noise issues… dead silent background. The filtering section made a big difference, but quality power modules is paramount.
@@LightningBoyAudio do you have any tips on sourcing or designing the filtering section?
There’s no schematic that I could find, but it’s just a small toroidal choke (mH) of substantial current handling capability, paired with a moderate electrolytic capacitor… per power rail.
Great idea!
yeah rpi zero style mini computers are just fine, and those 486/pentium computers
How do I get an Amek mix board to sync with newest Protools for automation etc
There are 3 ways. I think I’ll do a video on that in the future. The simplest way is not the best way, but you can enable a new track to record and route the SMPTE out from the console to that track. Press record and within Super True you’ll need to generate timecode, which can be found under “System, then Timecode settings.” Once you have several minutes of timecode recorded onto an audio track in PT, you align it to the start of your song, then output it to the SMPTE input on the console.
Given the aversion, and disdain for older hardware, why not just use PCEM or 86box to do effectively the same thing with newer hardware?
I mentioned the reason why you can’t in the beginning of the vid. According to David Rochester of Technical Audio Services, the mixing board needs to reference the clock speed of the processor and it requires a very specific speed range that can’t exceed 133mHz. That’s the primary reason why you can’t run an emulation. David worked on these desks for Harmon after they acquired AMEK in the late 90’s. He was “the guy” Harmon sent everyone to for repairs. David even got training from AMEK.
@@LightningBoyAudio PCEM and 86box is set at the bios of the emulators very accurately. That is how most people get old clock dependent software to work on new systems.
I was told it wasn’t possible, but you have me thinking I should take a closer look. After all, it would be ideal to use a modern computer.
@@LightningBoyAudio It should work just fine in PCEM and 86box. I've used it a few times on CNC controllers that require a preferred clock reference. Couple of builds I did were used office grade Dells. Tossed in a SSD and Serial / Parallel cards. Installed a minimal Debian Linux install then loaded PCEM in turn loaded up OS\2 Warp 4. 86box however is more intensive to setup. I'm thinking to give DOSBox a try next.
@@lelandclayton5462I've used DOSBox to virtualize old point of sale software for Win98 about 6yrs ago. It's a real pain to use it with physical port passthrough, wouldn't recommend it. Took a lot of tweaking to get it working with their label and receipt printers. I had to use a weird fork of it someone did as you can't do that at all in the base version of it (no printing support). I wish PCem existed back then it would've made life so much easier.
Great video; I think I would have went for finding an early ATX pentium board. You could have then used a new case and a new modern PSU.
I moded MSCDEX so it can address all drives in DOS 6.22
"I swapped out the fan while you weren't looking." :D
Those were the days! Wazzup Youtooob 🙂
Mac users would struggle to install DOS, or Windows, because they can't find the Any key. ;)
You can doo any key on the magic mouse it says
Great video!
Great stuff!! I want to do this with my 501. No chance you could add a simple parts list to this for some easy ebay browsing? Followed this whole restoration and am very impressed.
Yeah, I’ll try to add that to the description. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this series. Loved every second of it
This is FANTASTIC, I own an Angela II and have thought about doing exactly this for years. Thank you!
I thought transformer saturation was odd order?
24 hours 12AX7 Heater *in Series* at 15 Volts. people forget to mention things when they suggest burn ins; like people who tell you to leave your amp on, but neglect to mention it needs an appropriate load.
This is great
hi, how did you exactly glue the speaker diaphragm to the plate? you mentioned hot glue, but did you use glue arround the edges or directly on the center?
It’s been a while, so going off rough memory here. Hot glue ultimately failed. I ended up using epoxy in the end. It was only on the center of the cone. The rest of the speaker was affixed to a custom metal bracket.
I love the headphone Idea, I not have a great use for my Beyerdynamics that has one bad ear.
Very much enjoying this series, I am. I hear a difference between the modded and stock channels. It sound bigger and clearer but I'm wondering if a level difference isn't skewing my perception. Would love to hear a level-matched recording of acoustic guitar through the same mic setup.
honesly , t just seems like a eq/impedance thing with the piezos .
Can you hear much difference between Nichicon Gold and Muse???
I haven’t done any listening tests to compare these. I primarily look for caps with long life ratings, low ESR, and often low impedance. IMO electrolytic caps all sound bad, so it’s a matter of choosing the lesser evil.
Did you build a winder or is that purchased?
Not many views or likes on this, but please keep it up. It’s right up my alley. And I know it will finds its audience over time. This console wasn’t even on my radar, but now I know how to mod it…so maybe? Great info in general though. I get scared away from modding stuff the moment I see ICs, so it’s cool to see this whether I end up getting a big or not.
Thanks for watching!
