All my torts are down for brumation with the exception of a special needs marginated, a redfoot, and a russian tort that's too on the light side for my liking.
What do you use to control their temperature?
@Naturaltortoisekeepers mine go into insulated brumation boxes i build. I call them the "brumation houses". Something like dog houses with a lid for access. I fill them with dirt, mulch and top them off with leaves. The dirt is about 4ft deep and they dig down as it gets cold, and come up on favorable days. Some people like to add a heat element, but I found it actually gets too hot and makes them active again, as the boxes are basically in the sun. You could also ad a polycarbonate panel to the lid for extra heat if necessary.
@TheAnimalguy1996 this is outdoors? I can’t do outdoors as I reach minus 40c over winter
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers yeah it'd be best to do it within a shed with maybe a thermostat keeping it at 10c. We get into the teens(f)some winters, but for the most part it's mild. The biggest concern for me is keeping them dry.
My Russian is so picky, he likes butter lettuce, he likes Romain sometimes. I’d love some ideas please 🙏🏽.

All foraged, plantain, mallow, bristly ox tongue, knapweed, campanula, dandelion, chickweed, evening primrose, hebe flowers, sow thistle, hawksbeard, red valerian, violets, nipplewort.. I get fresh air, saves me money and the tortoises get a healthy diet..
Great choices!
Is that ribwort plantain
Sure is 👍
Yes it is. Have you tried it?
The best
Yes I have
It’s a tortoise fav for me
❤ what are those flowers? And can they have Mexican petunias?
Violas and pansies Have you checked out the tortoise table app or website?
Me too! People still think it's fine for bird's to eat bread 🙄🤨 very unhealthy for bird's, research before feeding any animals any people food's!
Right! Let’s feed them what their meant to be fed
Nice little torts ❤🐢
Thankyou!
I have a baby Eastern Hermann's in a wooden table with a humid hide and I spray daily, I have the heat bulb 10 inches away from the substrate but it still dries out in less than 5 minutes. Substrate is reptisoil and coir 50/50. I have spagnum moss in a humid hide but even that dries out pretty fast. Best wishes
Pet store subtrates will give you pet store results
Great looking group. In the winter how often do you feed the non brumating ones
Thankyou for the comment and the view I feed daily. I mostly feed dried foraged feeds over winter with cactus as the only “greens” Have you tried foraging?
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers yes I haven’t quite found enough to really dry and save up but I do grow cactus and order dried hibiscus and clover. Trying to dive deeper into forging. I think it’s the best overall
@ check friends yards that don’t maintain it well or neighbors etc I find can Be gold Mines
So what is it?
Mallow A all tortoise safe feed What species do you keep?
What’s wrong with mecruy bulbs
They have no control over heat or uvb Offer very small amounts of uvb in a small concentrated area Meaning a lethargic tortoise
Oh ok
What bulb should I get
?
Tubular uvb and seperate heat What species do you keep?
Is this applicable to indian star tortoise?
Beak trimming is applicable with all tortoises but I do believe my star had a bit of a “cat lip”. As in it had a bit more of a natural point and shouldn’t be as round as other species But if the beak is lower than bottom jaw then your due for a trim. What are you main feeds for diet?
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers cool, thanks!
@@shubhamjogadia07 I have a Indian star video aswell if your ever interested

Hi
Awesome! I feed my torts a natural diet as well. I let my torts go all winter until the following spring. I put all of mine into insulated brumation boxes I build. I make sure they are waterproof and fill them with dirt, mulch, and leaves. I usually wait until we get into the low 60s during the day, and lock them up for the rest of the winter.
All Ideas I’m trying to share and teach the public
I just subscribed. I have a 2 month old Eastern Hermann's. I agree with what you said about gardening. I'm currently growing dandelions, lamb's lettuce, white clover, red clover, campula and forget me nots, to be used as food. I'm a beginner gardener and tortoise owner. She has mint, a Boston fern and carex grass in her enclosure. I currently have her indoors in a wooden tortoise table. I am going to build an outdoor enclosure in the garden or I might just let her have free run of the whole garden supervised. I can only take her out on hot days. I'm in the South of England and I won't have many, if any, good days to take her outside for a good while now. She has her basking light obviously and a UVA and UVB tube light. She has daily soaks and fresh mixed greens with a bit of calcium powder and she has a humid hide with moss and a log she goes under, a piece of slate in the basking zone that holds the heat, a saucer of water she likes to drink from and sometimes just climb into, small and smooth river pebbles scattered around the plants, and the live plants I mentioned. Also there's an enclosed boxed off "bedroom" area with an upturned flower pot where she sleeps at night. She's very active and seems happy. 👍
I would consider removing the “bedroom” area as they can make them Lazy. A clay pot is a great alternative to offer them a shelter and encourage digging
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers hi, thanks for the reply. I manually put her in the enclosed end under the pot each night where she can cool down, but in what sense do you mean by "lazy"? If would be very easy for me to remove the dividing wall and partial flat and open up the entire area, but I just wondered what you mean please? Thank you.
@gazf6163 I don’t handle my tortoises unless necessary. Yes I would remove the divider. As tortoises are solar powered and do best with max sun
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers OK. Thank you 👍
So aren’t mercury vapour bulbs good
Combi bulbs or mercury vapour is kinda dated tech that isn’t all that beneficial
Hi have some questions first one do tortoises need an led light second what’s the black stuff you use around your enclosures
Led doesn’t offer the light source tortoises need. I’m not sure what you mean by black stuff. Maybe soil?
No like around the walls
@@Rayyanshorts52 I don’t really see the benefit in a LED Fb has reptile lighting that is helpful for more lighting insight
Do tortoises need a led light
Isn’t Halgeon bad for tortoises
Halogen is a great heat source Not for uvb tho
What’s the best for uvb
@@Rayyanshorts52 Arcadia in my opinion But ideally species specific percentage What species do you keep?
What is the light u use for your tortoise
Could you be a little bit more specific on what weeds/flowers/plant Russian tortoises can eat, please thank you❤
How many videos of mine did you watch? Refer to the tortoise table for safe weeds plants and flowers. All the feeds I show in my videos are safe
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers ok thx 😊
What do Russian tortoises eat? I’m just curious.😊
Weeds plants and flowers. I have care videos for them to
@@Naturaltortoisekeepers ok I will check that out thx 🙏

Is printed glass okay
What’s printed glass? Please tell me more! Is it crushed glass?
Glass with a picture on for example my tortoises enclosure has grass printed on it
It’s also called painted glass
@@Rayyanshorts52 those enclosures are trash!
@@Rayyanshorts52 it’s also called a house of ants
what type of Mallow ?
What types are there? I believe all that would be safe on the tortoise table would be safe
What leaves are these bro ??
Mallow, edible and a tortoise safe feed
What are you feeding your tortoise?
What lights do u use for uvb? Thanks in advance
12 percent for hermanns. Arcadia for brand
What his name
Ethel, all the gals get old lady names
Can Hermann tortoises eat grass
Best diet is weeds plants and flowers. A nibble of grass does no harm but it doesn’t benefit.
Can hermann tortoises eat lawn grass
A nibble doesn’t hurt but it has no benefit to a tortoise. Best to eat weeds plants and flowers. Variety is key
Aww they are super cute
Thankyou
Where are you located?
I’m in western canada. But weeds are world wide :)
Thank you, very interesting
Thankyou for commenting and viewing
You talked about heat and white light but not uva uvb how do you supply that for your torts
Tubular Arcadia I’ll make a video soon thankyou
She is gorgeous! Thanks for posting an alternative to the Dremel
Each tool has its place, I prefer using them all for different angles
An Ornery tortoise named Marilyn… lol… no surprise… Gail tortoise is probably a lot more relaxed, just fat….
Hahaha too funny
Ikr it’s not that hard I feed my tortoise mallow, dandelions and more weeds and there are some people that give Hermann tortoise fruit for a main diet
And then argue fruit is fine lol
Yes! Ed bassmaster lol
Glad you like it as much as me
I have some light/heating questions. I have a heat emitting bulb & i have a T5 10.0 tube light for the uvb. I also have a basking light its a incandescent flood light bulb i believe its a 65 watt. Should i change it out for a 100watt one? My sulcata is 1 month old
Larger wattage for heat Higher percent uvb would be ideal What are your temperatures? Feel free to join our fb group same name
