My headcanon for the ending: I do believe Guts won't ever be able to defeat Griffith in a duel, but I think Griffith will still get defeated by the end via the Godhand betraying him, and Guts living the rest of his days happily with Casca, as she takes care of him (Pretty much like Griffith's vision of him and Casca together).

Tho I must say, I think for GUTS to kill Griffith he has to kill Zote or someone really big among Apostates so his Sword could obtain that much of Demonic Energy, like it HAD enough to slice up the Ocean God, but it didn't work on Current Griffith and I think it's because it has not enough power for that. He needs to cut off his SOUL since he possesses his Child(the Moon Child)
