I heard this song on a scratcy vinyl in 82. I could not stop listening to it. I loved (and still do) this record, but the last song - Rathrum Fair - above all. It caught me, it kept going in my mind. I understood very little English those days, but I could catch some words, somewhat poignant. I was in my tweinties in the university, but most weekends I spent wondering in the mountains near my hometown, and I turned it on every morning, packing up for my next trip. This interpretation by Gemma Hasson is unbelievable beautiful, I think I actually fell in love with her. Alas, I could not understand the story behind. I would have given a fortune to get the lyrics, but no internet those days. The song made me a lifetime Irish folk music fan. I started to collect records, and went to concerts, even met the artists if I could. Once in the university club I met a group, called Wild Geese. I was lucky enought to have a chat with the band. Very friendly, and talkative chaps, except one, who was kind of shy. I was not too pushy either, so after some stupid questions, I turned away with a thank-you-fo-the-dedication on my new Wild Geese record. 40 years later, a sunday morning. I made a record presentation to my then grown up daughter. I showed her my ever so precious Rathdrum Fair from the 1980 collection. I mentioned, how curious after so many years I was about it, . Then I showed her the other record: my dedicated Wild Geese. And only then I caught the same name: Mick Fitzgerald. It took 40 years to realize, that the shy guy, dedicating my record was the one who wrote the most moving song of my life. I was there in person 40 years back, and I did not have the faintest idea what to ask from him. I am over 60 now, and Mick, I hope you can hear me somewhere: thank you for this beautiful song. You have certainly given at least one guy a song for a lifetime.
B side ) Vinyl
These solidly made units continue to give use and pleasure. I have a mid-1950s Pye Black Box here in the UK, fitted with a BSR auto-changer and valve amp. - also continuing to provide ongoing service with a varied selection of discs. I remember this particualr Garrard changer from my long-ago youth and hadn't seen one since. Nice to see it still doing its job.
Testing a record changer should ordinarily require only two discs. Camera work here is Very irritating.
super theme of the 80s, classic

You're saying it's hopeless That I should hope less Heaven can help us Well maybe she might You say it's beyond us What is beyond us Let's see and decide We've been meteoric Even before this Burns half as long when it's Twice as bright So if it's beyond us Then it's beyond us Let's see and decide And I will still be here, stargazing I'll still look up, look up Look up for love I will still be here, stargazing I'll still look up, look up Look up for love Don't you, give up, for me Don't fall, don't give up, for love Don't you, give up, for me Don't fall, don't give up, for love Don't you, give up, for me Don't fall, don't give up, for love Don't you, give up, for me Don't fall, don't give up, for love I'm trying to save us, you don't wanna save us You blame human nature, and say it's unkind Let's make up our own mind, we've got our whole lives Let's see and decide, decide And I will still be here, stargazing I'll still look up, look up Look up for love Stars don't disappear, they keep blazing Even when the night is over And I will still be here, stargazing I'll still look up, look up Look up for love Stars don't disappear, they keep blazing Even when the night is over That's how I find the light

That last one, Glad All Over(Dave Clark Five), I have a copy issued by EMI's Indian division, The Gramophone Company Of India(Private) Ltd.
The Record Companies was selling lisences world over, one country had them on EMI,others had them on Polydor-Philips etc-Depending because of what they was distributed,Polydor could not sell records with EMI lable on just like that etc.
Go to discogs.com,and you will see there is a lot of different Lables in different countries on all sorts of records.
Like I said in a reply to your other post, EMI was weak when controlling where their recordings went. Big multinational companies like EMI are well represented in other markets so they should exercise STRICT control to ensure that their recordings ONLY go to their own satellite companies and NOT to any other outside company. The only exception is if a company DID NOT have representation beyond its own national borders, for instance, Negram(Nederlands Gramophoon) in Holland. In 1970 they had a big worldwide hit with "Little Green Bag" by George Baker Selection, but they were a small Dutch label so to get that record onto the world market, they had to go through EMI's British, Australian and other divisions(excluding the Dutch Bovema division). In 1974 George Baker Selection had a European hit with "Baby Blue"(covered in Australia by Jimmy Little), but Negram, still small, had to find a new international label to carry the record, this time they went to Warner, who put the George Baker Selection's singles out on their Reprise label, and it wouldn't surprise me if Negram was absorbed into the Warner group by now.
What the hell is "Flowers In The Rain" by The Move doing on Polydor? The copyright owners of that record are EMI as they issued it on their Regal-Zonophone label in 1967.
They Was on Polydor in Germany and Norway, and Regal in England.:))
EMI was always weak when controlling where their recordings went. EMI was fully represented throughout Europe, especially Germany and Norway. EMI's German division is Electrola Gesselschaft, thus The Move, Joe Cocker and any other artist or group on EMI's Regal-Zonophone roster in England should have been on, if not Regal-Zonophone, then on His Master's Voice(Die Stimme Seines Herrens), Columbia or Odeon(Parlophone's counterpart in parts of Europe where Parlophone is not used by EMI).
I understand your point, but the thing is, the they was also selling lisences to other companies (it was big money in that) and that's also depend on who's distribute the records, like example Pink Floyd was on EMI in Europe, and CBS (Columbia) in the US,I got Paul Anka on Karusell in norway, but UK had him on His Masters Voice, and the original lable was ''Paramount'' in the US,There is a lot of examples how they was selling lisences world wide.
For a while in the 70s, Paul McCartney & Wings were turning up on CBS/Columbia in the USA and Canada, but that does not make the practice right. In the early 1960s, and the late 1950s, before a company in the USA could establish its label in Britain(or elsewhere), the company would licence its records to EMI or to Decca for British release. Decca already had its London label to carry overseas content but EMI was relying heavily on its flagship HMV label for both domestic and overseas content before 1962 when EMI launched its Stateside label, coinciding with the design change to black with the big 45rpm device. They'd use this label for many US-based labels, notably Motown(before 1965), the Bell/Amy/Mala group(until 1970) and ABC/Dunhill(until the advent of Probe in 1970). EMI owns Capitol, and from the 1980s the ownership was outright, 100%, before that, from 1955 the level of ownership was a bit over 94%. But despite this EMI had difficulty getting its insubordinate "infant" member company to take a number of the British HMV/Columbia/Parlophone/Regal-Zonophone roster of artists and groups. The Hollies went to Liberty, then CBS/Epic, Lulu went to Epic, Herman's Hermits to M-G-M, Manfred Mann to United Artists, The Beatles to Vee-Jay, Swan and Tollie. Only a few got onto the Capitol label or its Tower offshoot, they were Peter & Gordon, The Beatles(eventually) and ex-pat Aussies, The Seekers. Freddie & The Dreamers turned up on Tower. I've got more to say but I'll save it for another post.
It was no doubt the EMI was fighting in Struggle against the big American companies, they've got two trials in the 60's,the first agains RCA Victor, that dispute was who's got the right to use the ''the little dog who look in to the horn'' (you know) in Europe, because EMI allready used the dog on ''His Masters Voice'' the RCA could not use the dog logo on their printed copy's in Europe. The other dispute was between Columbia US and EMI europe, the US company wanted marked with their Columbia in Europe, the trial ended with that that American Logo had to name their logo CBS in Europe, since EMI allready had a Columbia lable overe here. But yes,i see your point, but there was often cheaper for main companies sell artists on Lisences, and simply hand over the pressing to the bying company exsample the Move,Polydor had work out to print the records and picturesleeves,EMI just got the money, nice and easy, the lisences was valued in a period, 6 months was pretty common, but could be extended if the record was selling good for the bying company.
6:13 What's the name of this one? It's the only record I don't recognize.
This Garrard model is RC121 4 HN:))
Ok just ignore the first answer, you ment the record at 6:13 it's The Tremeloes ''Suddenly Winter''
Thanks! I'd never have guessed it; they changed their sound so much during those years. Nice sounding record, it was a fairly obscure flip side in the USA.
Great turntable and record collection! Good to see it working so well.
Yes,just love this player,i grow up with one of these,(not particulary this one) but one excacly the same:))
This one was in poor shape when i got it,motor stuck in old grease, had to pick it out and had it for a while in hot water,it loosen up and with a little WD 40 ,and on the automatic registre, and some cleaning and some light oil,it just wake up after re-asembling the parts, plugged in the radio, and it work just perfect since.

I Think in 1952 or something,i know RCA Vicktor made them from 1949 or 1950,they release 7'' inch 45's in 1949,that's for shure:))
Sansynligvis kondensatorer som bør skiftes.
wasn't a version of this changer made that could be used for stereo
Hi,not this particulary RC121 4HN that was mono only, they was producing this model from 1954-1957 after that came a new model, RC121 MKll that was made in stereo, witch was stated on the front of it,MKll wasn't made with black ''bakelite'' arm and controll buttons like the one in the video,it was all white plastic, great players both of them:))
ruclips.net/video/cc27LeWVVEw/видео.html Here is a working MKll from an another youtube user:))
Though I've never tried it, I assume one could adapt almost any tonearm for stereo by just fishing an extra one or two wires through it {or fishing a 3 or 4 wire twisted bundle behind the original 2 wires to keep the noise down) and installing a stereo cartridge. But I know some models (eg. some Webster-Chicago changers) had too much vertical rumble to work very well with a stereo cartridge; I don't know if that would have been a problem with early Garrards.
SALUDOS DESDE VENEZUELA
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
Sara Cool do not exist in the real world, she's just a voice in the music program.
I actually wrote this song and played guitar on it..i also sing backing vocals on "The Galway Races"...Rathdrum Fair has been recorded numerous times even by "The Irish Rovers" in Canada...
This is a great song! Well written song! Are you still writing?
As far as I am concerned this song is a wee classic!
Hi Mick, what happened to Gemma? My mum was from Rathdrum so it's particularly poignant.
Este tema es demasiado Buuuenooo, no tiene que envidiar nada a los temas nuevos y me atrevo a decir muucho mejor, los efectos de sonidos y ritmos son excelentes y muy modernos
