Resilience Engineering 101: Part 10 Model Surprise
Woot! (Wait, do we say that anymore?) We have reached a landmark - our 10th RE 101 video! In this video, Dr. David Woods interprets George Box's maxim: "All model are wrong. Some are useful." He speaks on how this is often misinterpreted as a way to lower the expectations on models and modelers, how the key is REframing and REmodeling, and how an RE lens sets it this classic quote in a new light.

Dave Woods Keynote panel on Systems Engineering & Patient Safety in Health Care
Просмотров 2314 дней назад
The discussions show how CSE work plays an important role in Human Factors and Resilience Engineering integration into healthcare systems as in other critical societal areas. In part 1 you will find Nancy Leveson's introduction to Systems Safety Engineering for health care professionals. At about 9:30 you can hear Dave Woods' remarks which began with a recap of how patient safety arose as a cri...
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 9 High-Frequency Trading Case Study in Growth and Complexification
Просмотров 1925 месяцев назад
Dr. David Woods explores the Resilience Engineering case study laid out in the New York Times Bestseller, Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt by Michael Lewis. He dives into the patterns of florescence and adaptation that are exemplified by the co-adaptive cycles that occur within this microcosm of Resilience Engineering.
RE 101: Part 8 Trading off Two Time Horizons for Seeking Opportunity and Managing Challenges
Просмотров 1535 месяцев назад
In this video, Dr. David Woods goes deeper into how the two fundamental activities for systems viability, seeking opportunity and managing challenges, inevitably come into conflict with each other. He works through how the short-term and long-term time horizons also interact with each other.
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 7 The Laws of Fluency and Stretched Systems
Просмотров 2306 месяцев назад
Dr. David Woods describes two important laws of the complex adaptive universe: the Law of Fluency and the Law of Stretched Systems. Through these Laws, he describes how adaptations are critical to the functioning of the system and how they also, if not managed, can contribute to future brittle system performance.
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 2.5 - Robust Yet Fragile (Director's Cut)
Просмотров 2636 месяцев назад
This is a deeper dive video into Robust Yet Fragile (and, of course, the corresponding parts of the Theory of Graceful Extensibility). Dr. David Woods delivers this extended lesson with the help of one of his favorite authors on the topic ... the fantastic Dr. David Woods!
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 6 - Lines of Inquiry
Просмотров 2286 месяцев назад
Dr. David Woods takes a deeper dive into the many lines of inquiry that inform Resilience Engineering. Some are from quite unexpected places! Or maybe they're quite expected, as we've clearly found that there are resilient systems patterns that can be found in systems of all sizes, from biological to social to economic to ecological. We're pretty sure this works at sub-atomic up to celestial as...
Resilience Engineering for Systems Engineering - Part 1
Просмотров 5049 месяцев назад
This video works through how systems engineering has adapted and evolved throughout the last 40 years. Starting with Three Mile Island, David Woods moves between theory and events that he was personally a part of as well as those that he has studied. He turns the lens of Resilience Engineering on the discipline of systems engineering itself, documenting how it has evolved and adapted over this ...
A Resilience Engineering look at Tradeoffs
Просмотров 67810 месяцев назад
Tradeoffs are a commonplace thing, but how you think about them can change how you address them, outmaneuver them, and change them. However, you can never eliminate them! David Woods shows the visual technique that we used (borrowed from John Doyle) that helps us communicate what a tradeoff, and a tradespace, really is, and provides insights into how to design new solutions that address the mul...
Resilience Engineering 101: Introduction pt 1 - It's all about viability
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Want to know about Resilience Engineering? You're in the right place! This is the first video in the Cognitive Systems Engineering Laboratory's (CSEL) Resilience Engineering 101 Series. Dr. David Woods, a co-founder of Resilience Engineering, gets us kicked off reminding us all that everything must tie back to Viability, and that Viability is sought by both Seeking Opportunity and Handling Chal...
The Science and Pragmatics of RE through the lens of Complexification
Просмотров 97810 месяцев назад
David Woods starts by describing how successful systems become more complex, then discusses the findings and perspectives of Resilience Engineering (RE) through this lens.
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 3 - Synchronization, an antidote to system breakdown
Просмотров 51311 месяцев назад
Here we discuss how synchronization is necessary both in seeking opportunity and in managing challenges. It is the primary antidote to working at cross-purposes, and together with anticipation is the antidote to saturation and, ultimately, decompensation.
Resilience Engineering 101: Part 2 - Tangles, Tradeoffs, and Robust yet Fragile
Просмотров 72411 месяцев назад
In our second video, we lay out some fundamentals of systems that come out of our base understanding of how systems manage and outmaneuver constraints to seek opportunity and manage challenge to ultimately sustain viability. The first is that viable systems will become increasingly tangled across layers. The second is that they will have to manage tradespaces, making tradeoffs. The third is tha...

Thank you Dr. Woods! As an HF Engineer (for NASA & other private aeronautical agencies w/ a focus on human-system interaction w/ technology), I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this presentation. Access to content like this, helps me sharpen & continue to add tools to my "toolbox" and stay current in the field. Very interested to hear more about human performance and autonomy within the air vehicle (e.g., UAS) field.
