Interesting subject. Well done Oliver.
You should do a pod cast on the eel fishery Oliver John rogan who’s eel smoke house facility was closed on foot of the department aka denis Maher ( the destroyer ) Kieran lynch of north west fishery board are two people you should consider taking too.. on Patrick’s point of supporting fishing that’s a hard one to see when no one in any sector questioned the ethnic cleansing of traditional fisheries by IFI I talk of bass sea trout eel add the opportunities that Tuna present …the fishermen have a attitude I’m alright jack fuck you . Just look at how Holland manage there eel fisheries linked to sea food festivals and community identity. Look at how the uk and French operate great bass hand line fisheries. Salmon why are there no hatcheries only on one river the corrib and that’s full of salmon
Truth and Irish government...... .........🤔🤔
Along with it's predecessors...the 33rd Dáil have sold out Ireland. And it was never their's to sell. Absolute treachery. Brussels bedamned.
It was a pleasure to participate in the podcast!
The Central Statistics Office figures for Inflation in the wholesale price of fish (i.e. not the price received by the Fishing Boats but the price received by those who buy from them) show a stunning rise of 24% up to end March 2024. Meanwhile, the price being received by the actual Fishing Boat is between 10 & 20% lower than this time last year. This means that the Buyers are now gaining 40+% more for the fish they sell into the market than they did one year ago! This simply MUST STOP!
This sounds all to familiar to the UKip BS regarding fishing in Britain. The licences and quoter's are sold on the open market. Nothing the Irish government can do once the have been sold. Secondly, fishing in a tiny fraction of the Irish economy with the majority of the fish sold abroad. Only a fraction of the fish is eaten in Ireland. Its a dying industry with diminishing stocks of fish to catch. Nobody wants their children going into a dangerous and precarious working environment for little reward. At least Irish fishermen don't have the endless paperwork their poorly advised depleted and mainly unemployed British fishermen have thanks to the likes of Nigel Farage and his rainbows and unicorns. Ireland has too much to lose by following that route.
You really do not know what you're talking about. The entire argument put forward by Farage and others about British fishing was entirely specious and you're applying a logic to Irish fishing that is also entirely specious. Quotas are NOT sold on the open market in Ireland because Quotas are the property of the State and distributed among Fishing Boats by Government. They cannot be sold, swapped or otherwise transferred by an Irish Fishing Boat, either to another Irish Boat or to foreign registered boats. Moreover, the complaint about low Quotas in Britain pre-Brexit was entirely specious insofar as British Boats were entitled to 47% of all Fish Quotas in British Waters. Post-Brexit, Britain's share of Quotas in British Waters rose to approx 75% of all Fish Catches in British Waters, a wholly successful outcome BUT you should know that Ireland is granted and entitled to no more than a maximum of 15% of all Quotas and TAC's in Irish Waters and there is NO prospect of our being granted any more than this by the various Member State in the EU Council.
@@watchfulrasputin If you think a an Irish MEP minister is going to jeopardise Irish interests in Europe by making a fuss for a dying industry like sea fishing you need to take a look in the mirror. The current Irish fishing fleet is sufficient in size and catch to justify itself. Nothing is going to change. Nobody cares where the fish comes from as long as the price is affordable. Its too small an issue outside the fishing community. It's just not an issue..
Yes !
It's time to stop talking us IRISH should take control of our own waters it's our fish we been robbed by greedy governments lineing there own pockets ✋👎
@11 IREXIT LEAVE EU NOW 20/04/2024
Inshore sprat fishing to service fish farms must be stopped. It's destroying the inshore ecosystem, destroying nursery areas for all fish, particularly seatr0ut populations which rely on it Cash going to a handful of scroats while inshore fishermen's livelihoods are wrecked by the farms themselves. Lobster fishing wiped out around fish farms and 20k down/up wind
The Irish inshore fishermen have the same problem the UK fishermen have, most of the larger boats are owned by a few people, those people have access to politicians and lawyers....simples.
What is it with the Irish? you migrate to most countries on the planet and complain about migrants coming to Ireland. You laugh at the British voting for Brexit, enjoy the benefits of being in the EU yet when it comes to sharing your fishing grounds with fellow EU citizens you are complaining again!
No harm Mark, that's a very simplistic thesis you're presenting. You're correct the the Irish have emigrated to every corner of the world, for all kinds of reasons, economic being primarily the casus beili. On your 2nd point, emigration into Ireland is something I welcome, if their is one nation who really can't complain about migration it's Ireland, however the anger found here has its source in government mis-management which is causing the backlash, I have no doubt there are plenty who are using it as a vehicle to express what's really in their heart, but the vast majority are simply people who are afraid. On laughing at the British for leaving the E.U, again, I can only speak for myself but I wasn't laughing, but saw it as the first move on the breakup of the E.U. What's fast becoming obvious is this construct is simply empire in birth, and tbh, I'd rather not see my country get out from under one empire just to get into bed with another, and in a small way that what you hear in this video. Decisions taken over the heads of the people it affects, disregard for small communities to provide for 'the greater good' (which is late stage capitalism monopolising resources). I hope my answer is to much of a rambling and I've answered your points, ordinary people all over this contenent have more in common than what's ever presented dividing them.

Very Interesting!
EU is raping Norway using the acer contract for hydroelectric power to drain the country of this power to facilitate Germany and GB shutting THEIR powerplants to impress the green fanatics. SO - Norwegian politicians try to take it out on the Irish? Anyway: say no, if you take a bad deal, the value lost is dumped into feeding corruption. Look: Norwegian hydropower are produced at one Eurocent/kwh, sold dirt cheap to Germany and GB - leaving Norwegians to pay up to a hundred times the price for THEIR OWN POWER! EU is no good for anyone.
lol. UK is the only smart country to get out of that shit.
White flare at the bridge might get you noticed!
Divide and Rule . You are all part of the same community. That you are not being involved is no surprise. It's DIKTAT from the top downwards. The farmers are having the same threats and change imposed on them. Vote the lot out and take power back.
Just ignore their new Commercial LAWS , Farming & Fishing existed before State or Crown , it's OUR Unalienable Rights that are the Inherent Sovereign Natural Rights that existed before the Creation of the State and which, being Antecedent To and Above the State , Can Never Be Taken Away, Diminished, Altered or LEVIED by the State.
External money and lobbying, as usual screwing over the locals in favour of EU's giant factory ships and their 'stakeholder capitalist' conjob. Blaming Brexit while continuing to ignore the massive damage that the EU and their lobbying has and is doing is an absurd standpoint to reason and argue from. Stop banning locals from a livelihood, take back fishing licences and expire the licences of foreign ships as now irrelevant for the treaty no longer holds sway and then Brexit might actually deliver what the people voted for. Taking OUR assets back is the only way through this mess.
Thank you folks. An interesting and informative video.
All depends if the government give all military and Navy over to NATO,, Under their rule ,over Air and sea ,, That covers fisheries,,.
Farming and fishing, YOUR government is hell bent on destroying both industries..............
Why would they do that? 🤔

Well said Patrick! The real and actual pity about Irish Fishing is that neither the SFPA nor the Department nor most politicians will pay a blind bit of attention to the clear criticisms leveled against them - other than to continue along their well-worn path of screwing Irish Fishing and Irish Coastal Communities. From where and how do these clowns think that those who reside all along our coastline and on our islands must manage to earn their living into the future as Irish Fishing Boats are (effectively) being compulsorily decommissioned by our donkeys in Government? The fact of the matter is that the EU has refused point blank to apply the principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that was agreed in November 1982 ever since they promulgated the founding CFP of January 1983 and those who hold and wield power within both the Commission and the EU Council of Ministers have refused ever since to allow the CFP to both recognize and adopt the basis tenets of UNCLOS when the CFP was amended in 1992 and again in both 2002 and 2013. Now that the CFP is due to be considered again towards the end of this year, the single most important change that can be made to the CFP is to direct that Coastal States must have first dibs over the fish in their own waters and only when the interests of those Coastal States have been fulfilled should Fleets from other Member States be allowed to catch the fish in the Coastal States' Waters. In thereby adopting the most basic tenets of UNCLOS will Relative Stability be finally consigned to Cecil's dustbin!
Following Patrick Murphy's cut off the State two days ago, Brendan Byrne follows up yesterday but the real and actual pity is that neither the SFPA nor the Department nor most politicians will pay a blind bit of attention to the clear criticisms leveled against them - other than to continue along their well-worn path of screwing Irish Fishing and Irish Coastal Communities. From where and how do these clowns think that those who reside all along our coastline and on our islands must manage to earn their living into the future as Irish Fishing Boats are (effectively) being compulsorily decommissioned by our donkeys in Government? Wonderful Lady - Every day is a school day
Mary j rust bucket??? huh she's a fine big ship shur🤔 religion teacher at that ya God fished but he never worked on a trawler much like himself
"Relative Stability" as constructed over the latter months of 1982 and adopted by the EU Council in January 1983 represents a complete denial of the Rights of Irish Fishing in Irish Waters and in complete contravention of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea negotiated at Montego Bay and agreed in November 1982 which confers Rights on the Coastal State to the fish in its waters. In the case of Ireland, with Ireland being the Coastal State, the Rights to the fish in Irish Waters were overwhelmingly granted to all other EU Member States with approximately 15% granted to Irish Fishermen and women in complete contravention of UNCLOS. Irish Fishermen and women deserve far better than how we've been treated over the past 40 years.
Thanks for this Oliver and Patrick. The Fishing Master Register is an complete overreach by Minister McConalogue and his Department's Public Servants and a power-grab by both Department and SFPA in their creation of a Police State for Fishing Skippers and Owners. What is worse is that the actual Section setting up the Fishing Masters Register does NOT say that all Skippers must register but says that the Minister must set up a Register AND the Penalty Points allocated to a Master. This is a complete Shxt-show perpetrated by our Government against our Fishing communities and represents a giant leap in attempts to destroy our Fishing Industry forever and permit our waters to be raped by our European "colleagues". How Government and Opposition TD's and Senatos allowed this piece of legislation to pass through our Houses of the Oireachtas in the form passed into law shows just how divorced from reality are the majority of those Legislators.

It appears the Russians listened and understood the fishermen’s plight and came to a compromise which is more than can be said for the Irish government.
It appears the Russians were more understanding of the Irish fishing plight than their own government. They listened and compromised.
Nice bro
Don't give up fighting against the corrupt EU. There's no level playing field when Ireland gets 15% of their own fish in their own waters. Set up stalls in your towns and tell the public what is happening to your fishing industry. Its alright you tying up your boats but the other EU countries should have their quotas cut down. Your self serving government should be ashamed of themselves.
Fair play to the men of leenan on here , Shame on the clowns in the Irish government present and past for not standing up for the rights of the Irish fisherman and yet the same corrupt clowns will stand by and let Spanish and french boats come in and clean everything up and not a question asked , We keep voting these c--s back into office and they keep aligning with what they are told by Europe and cower in the corner like children in a classroom obeying the paymasters, Which begs the question of why do we keep voting against change and trying something new , Fair play to Michael /Robert and the rest of the lads voicing their opinion on here ,
Excellent points, and very well said. Unfortunately governments in Ireland are constantly out of touch with the issues people in rural Ireland face.
