OG's 2 Cents, I was a Psych RN for 26 yrs. We know physically abusing a child can lead to mental illness. Did you know the same is true when a child is neglected? If we go behind the dialogue just a bit we can understand both the many different ways to give a child their voices and the many different benefits in doing so. Being actively present and accessible to a child and actively listening to them establishes a bond, nurtures, strengthens & promotes trust. The child's self image & sense of self worth is strengthened bc the adult, the source of love, knowledge and authority validates the child's self image & worth by their interaction & the adult's accessibility, active participation & active support. Another benefit of giving a child their voice is it offers the opportunity for self analysis & the value of it. The child can weigh the pros & cons of a particular decision, compare it to similar previous decisions, examine their level of motivation & commitment, estimate how much of consequences they can sustain on their own & estimate how much help they will need. When a child is given a voice they are more likely to seek out the adult(s) they have a bond with to work out complex decisions, explore an impulsive idea and seek support in pursuing a particular interest. To subject a child to the old idea that, " Children are to be seen and not heard from ", stiffles trust, creativity, learning, devalues the child, their self image, their self worth and creates a caste system btwn. adult and child. I will offer this to parents. A wise man who was instrumental in changing my life taught me this, " There is no such thing as a mistake; there are only opportunities for one person to teach and another to learn ". What I interpret from this is that we, all of us would do well to seeing ourselves as both Teacher and Student. That we open ourselves to the idea our lives are constructed from paths of learning we ourselves choose. As to an adult supporting a child. The Japanese Philosopher Yasutani Roshi wrote, " The fundamental delusion of humanity is to suppose I am here and you are out there ". ☯️ ✌🏼n' 💖
