Congrats, you have what l believe was the first S-VHS deck National/Panasonic released in my part of the world. They used the same chassis as the D80 VHS deck. Not that many of either models around. I regret selling mine years ago.
Ah, good to know thanks. Probably explains why the electronics are a bit of a mess.

Must be a winning formula.
Thankyou!

Where do you find all your original service manuals? For just about anything I want to fix, whether older or more modern, it's like trying to find rooster teeth when I search for service manuals whether originals for sale or scans in PDFs.
Some models I've never been able to find a service manual. All the physical manual I got a long time ago. Either buying in lots online. Or visiting TV / Video service centers before they closed down and asking for them.
What happened to this camera? Have you managed to fix it, or would it be for sale?

@@Elecami I see.. its doing something, congrats.
Well, very interesting and unusual components layout. Most of Panasonics/National VCRs from that time have power supply unit in the top left corner..
Some of the G series are like this. NV-G20 and similar models.
These PSU’s get really hot. The boards used to brown and the tracks on the pcb would loosen making cap replacements challenging. Best kept out of cabinets or stacked with other hot gear. Lots of boards in them but they were pretty reliable. PSU aside.
@@michaell2120 Agree. I even considered an option to order modern replica of the pcb made of FR4 instead of shitty getinax..
Looks like a really nice VCR, but what a nightmare to work on. Just minutes before I saw that you'd posted this new video I was looking at a VCR that's advertised in a local Cash Converters store here in Perth AU, and it's coincidently a Panasonic NV-FS1. They want $249 for it but no remote.

Who else is in denial that the VCR era is long gone and whoever was in his teens in the 80's is now an old man or soon to be an old man.
VCRs will live on!
I recall the European/ German 'EG' version had an on-board FLOF/ Teletext decoder for the VPT function, along with the corresponding buttons on the remote. They used A2 Stereo there, so perhaps they placed the VPT/ Teletext decoder where the NICAM module would normally sit in those machines..
I see interesting what other regions get.
It's good it hasn't got a head cleaning wheel they use to cause so much problems and clogged the heads as well as wear them out. I had a f77 and my Technician Guy use to throw the head cleaning wheels in the bin on all machines at service
Oh yes clean the mode switch/timing gear otherwise the all the timing jumps out. 12voltvids do a great video on how to do that
100% agree. Standard practice was to ditch them.
Some of those auto head cleaning things used foam that turned to mush. Those need to be thrown out. Othered used some sort of felt like material, those might be ok still if clean.
I totally agree on leaded solder. I hate working on something with lead-free solder because it's much higher temp to melt and harder to desolder things cleanly. My good old 63/37 leaded solder from over 30 years ago works great and makes very nice solder joints. I also inherited a couple old spools of 60/40 solder that makes a very nice shiny joint. It's not like I'm going to eat the stuff, and I always wash my hands after doing solder work.
Yes, Always add in some lead solder to make the job more bearable. Removing lead from solder was probably the worst thing that ever happened to electronics, ever.
Had an NV F70 - only way to get stereo out of OPTUS cable TV back in the day was through RF - so it spent most of its live as a demodulator connected to a stereo. sadly power supply failures are common on these.
Good use. Power supply is in a poorly ventilated metal box, the capacitors will be hot and wear out fast.
I recently picked up an NV-FS75 that functionally works quite well, however even though I've cleaned the heads extensively there is some RGB color noise during playback and recording. I suppose in theory both the read and write heads could be 'worn out' in the same way, but I suspect something else is causing it. I had a quick go at checking some caps on the power supply, and I found a few small ones at the very end of the secondary circuit that needed replacing, but it didn't seem to make a difference (even though I didn't trust those caps regardless). Is it worth taking the time to really open up the PSU to remove all the electrolytic caps and replace them, or could the color noise be coming from somewhere else?
@@alexss3 If the FS75 is anything like the FS90 it has some surface mount electrolytic caps that fail in the Y/C processing area. Look for a hybrid board with a white ceramic look to it. The SM caps leak. There are very few SM caps in these machines luckily. Recapping the PSU is par for the course for this era of machines. Use 105 degree caps. I've seen it cause herring bone interference on the picture. PSU's are pretty reliable other than caps.
@@michaell2120 I have the service manual so I will take a look to see if there are any surface mount caps around the Y/C circuitry. Getting the entire PSU recapped will be done as well as you suggest.
@@alexss3 I think you should replace all the power supply caps. Except the large high voltage one on the primary, that one is usually still ok. All the others should be replaced. Even if it is is working now, they will be end off life and could cause the power supply to 'blow up'. I had a few do that already on power up.
The later HS800 S-VHS deck power supply has the same heatsink configuration and it has no heatsink grease either. Unusual.
I guess they made sure it was very flat. Or didn't need a large amount of thermal transfer.
Fun fact. The FS90 is the model that superseded the FS100. Go figure?
It is a bit strange.
I would have thought the other way round, but I could be wrong
@@jasonhawkins4528 At least that was the case where I live. The FS90 was a more compact unit height wise.
are you able to look at some teac vcrs? i have 4 of them myself and i love them. great machines
I don't think I have any in my collection, so no. Sorry.
It's interesting that when you plugged it in, there was an immediate buzz in the sound through the camera/mic. Bad PSU filter caps maybe?
Must be from an initial pulse of current. The mic cable was near the power cable.
Hey I also play VRChat and mess around with vintage video equipment like the Panasonic NV-M5B, would be cool to add you, my username is EATB
Thanks to the advice on how to get the back panel off. I was stuck with this and looking for a solution. Will give it a try.
Thanks. Glad to help.
The cable is insanely thin for 350V DC.
Good insulation. It is also very low current. The TV would be 100W or less.
@@Elecami I was thinking of how easily it could be damaged or accidentally penetrated by the edge of something metal.
@@BrianG61UK It is pretty robust. Similar to any high speed data cable. Just got to take are when installing it and not subject it to stress of kinks.
What's the point of switching from electrical signals to optical and 3 meters later switching back to electrical? What was Samsungs point here?
5 or 10m. To make the cable invisibly thin and to allow high speed data to travel that distance without corruption. Very difficult to achieve with copper.
I know eveything about this machine....it is to fix and works like a clock with tootwheels.....if you have the K chassis service manual there is a conplete discription how to fix......greetings, frits.meuris Sittard Netherlands
Thanks. I'll look up the manual. The G20 Service Manual I have has got all I needed to know so far for these machines.
lots a goodies in there, teardown performed well
Thank you :-)
Do you know why my panasonic isn't counting correctly on rewind? Haven't tried fast forward. Is it because on rewind the machine half loads and so might not be passing the ACE head correctly?
Counting on the tape counter? It could be that the tape is blank or has sections that don't have anything recorded on it.
@@Elecami I sussed out what it was, basically when the panny RWD's or FFWD's the p4 arm drops off maybe to the half load position ( I think it's called) and so when RWDing and FFWDing the tape isn't in contact with the main head drum. This alters the angles of the tape path and in my case the tape wasn't touching the ACE assembly which measures the time. So I had to play around with the p5 arm by tightening it until I got the counts roughly correct, it's a real pain I spnt ages on it. Anyway thanks for your replies mate 👍
Even with a fan, the lifespan was too short. For some reason I am getting a DRV ADJ error. I think the problem is the optics. It's great to take it apart and study it! 👍💯
Thanks. Seems there were some design flaws leading to a short life of this machine?
I found there was too much grease on my carriage, so I cleaned excess off the rack gear and made sure it ejected and loaded using my hand a few times then refitted it and it worked. I had earlier just realigned the whole mechanism (following the g deck video) after I bought it and realised the p5 wasn't correctly connected to the sector gear (one tooth out) now it works ok. Mode switch is next to clean, but like yours it's in a real awkward place and there's an additional motor blocking access. I've had to order a rachet screwdriver to undo the screw behind the motor so I can get to the mode switch. I might buy a NV-D48 since it uses the same split washers and circlips and I could do with some spares. Great video, enjoyed watching you troubleshooting.
Thanks. Glad this was helpful. Hope you have success with your machine.
Hi , ive broken my one connect box how can i get new one , plz guide
Buy it as a spare part from Samsung or find second hand on eBay etc.
Hi there, i have had and used a PDW-530P model for a month now, but when doing a timelabse today the power cut off (was using wired power supply). When turning it on now, an error 'ERROR 03-354' pops up and wont let me do much. Have tried with several different new disks. Have been reading the operational manual, but only thing it says is to contact a sony technician. Do you have any ideas as to things to try? Is there a service manual somewhere on the internet? Kind Regards and thanks for the video! 🙏
I don't have much information about these machines sorry. I don't think I could find a service manual for mine.
G10 was the superstar of the era!!. Thank you for the big effort. ❣
Thanks. Good to hear.
Wrong screws fitted everywhere. The red flag of a careless repair. Such a shame it was so messed up because they are a great model. Thanks for the front row view of this train wreck.
Glad you liked it. Is a shame this one had a bad life.
Do yourself a favour and keep the carriage together prior to reinstalling it.
Yea, I often do, but the instructions do say to take to the top plate off so you can see better to line it up.
Hi Elecami, I recently found an old MS1, tape mechanism and everything seems to be working fine but much like the second camera you tested it has that terrible hissing sound, am I looking at a faulty power supply as well? Such a great informative video!
Most likely the power supply capacitors need to be replaced.
Great video. I have a mint condition 7AF, looks identical, but I think with added macro. Do you know if it’s a similar build to the 8AF? It has a bit of ‘CCD rot’ and was thinking of trying to fix it. I fear I’m going to mess it up more, although it’s kind of useless with 1/4 of the image blurry.
I am not sure, I think this is the only one in this model range I have looked inside.

National Nv l18 manual need please help
Not sure about that one. I could not see by Google Search.
This model used to confuse some people as the LP mode was audio-only!
Me too, It is a bit unusual.
This was the best era of VHS machines for Panasonic. Not all technicians liked the complexity of the G & G2 mech but it was pretty reliable if you knew what to proactively service. These machines had the reverse motor to improve review mode and frame by frame advance. It's F70 cousin had a flying erase head on the drum for frame accurate editing. The syncro edit connector allowed you to syncronise two decks for accurate insert editing. Not bad for a domestic machine.
Thanks. They are nice machines. Compact and many functions.
I remember working on these. We did call them G revised mechs. The A to D converter and RAM are probably for the super still pause. They sample and hold the frame for a perfect pause.
Not sure, I thought it was only the 'D' range that had the frame store. NV-D48 etc. That box was for the NICAM Audio decoder.
@@Elecami Ah, ok. I could be wrong then. It looked like it had the super still feature.
HI FI audio it's ok, only it has no indicator for stereo. When the tape has stereo sound, L and R appear on the VU meter. If the sound is mono, the VU meter only indicates that without those L R squares.
That is interesting, I didn't notice.
Its funny how they built this crazy complex mechanism just to save 1 motor. They should have just done the same as V2000 and directly drive the reels with two independent DC motors. At least for high end models like this one. I guess they didnt want to redesign the whole thing, so they just bodged a bunch of stuff onto thair standard G-mech for high end models. Thanks for your videos, interesting stuff!
It is a bit weird. I've got a few V2000 machines. We'll take a look at them eventually.
@@Elecami That would be very cool! Apparently (some?) V2000 machines have a piece of synthetic sapphire somewhere in the tape path, I was always curious wtf is going on with that! Also the videoheads are mounted on piezoelectric actuators for automatic track following. Lots of super wacky stuff going on with V2000, looking foreward to your analysis!
@@WolfmanDude I think that is to clean the surface of the tape. The auto track following is great feature. Later on found on professional machines.
I have a similar NV-FS65 (S-VHS NTSC). It has a dedicated transformer attached to the back and linear +/-15V power supply board specially for audio.
Interesting, I'll have to look out for that on my other models.
Nice
Thanks
Great video! If you want that machine to work at its peak, you are going to need to replace every single "Jade Green" TOSIN capacitor in it. In my unit, nearly all of those had ESR values of 10-30 ohms which were definitely bad. They were just a terrible brand of capacitors in general, or at least did not age well. I'm not a big fan of ELNA caps either, but those were mostly ok in this unit, My question for you is whether component output is active when playing a regular VHS tape? Reason I'm asking is that I don't plan to ever put a WVHS tape in mine, so if there's no component output, there's really no reason to do any recapping of those SMT caps on the bottom board *IF* it is only used for WVHS. The other question is if the 3D YC button seems to do anything for you when playing back a regular VHS tape?
Sucks about the capacitors, I probably won't get around to doing that. No spare time. I think the component is only for the W-VHS part, that might have been why I did not see it working correctly in W-VHS mode. The input and output needs to be through the component for the W-VHS to work correctly. Maybe I'll investigate this one again once I get through al the other VCRs. Not sure on the the TBC, I assume it is involved with regular VHS and S-VHS.
Ever get it working? If so, what was your impression of the playback quality for regular VHS?
I didn't peruse it any further. Maybe I will one day. Got some many other VCRs and other equipment to get through.
Can't remember the VHS playback quality, I expect it will be fairly good since it is a high end machine.
