Gibson SG + EMG Bridge Humbucker Comparison: 58X, 85 and JH (with 24 Volt Mod)
Haven't seen a lot of demos of these EMG humbuckers in an SG... so I made one myself!
No EQ, limiting, or volume normalization whatsoever.
Amp used:
Bogren Digital BDH 5169, gain at 7, pedal engaged, default IR, input and output set to 0. Input gain on UAD Apollo Twin set to 0.
Tone considerations:
-Both the EMG 85 and JH tones use the 24 Volt Mod, putting them more in line with the X-Series preamp of the 58X.
-Stock saddles replaced with Graph Tech String Saver Saddles, which probably reduces frequencies around 2K.
-Strings are Ernie Ball Cobalt, which produce a louder signal with bass and treble frequencies somewhat accentuated.
-Input gain on UAD Apollo Twin set to 0.

    to the people complaining about spending more in upgrades. all of my guitars, whether they are 299$ or 1500$ I end up "upgrading" to the way I want it as well. what is funny is my 299$ 7-string sounds better than my 1500$. I agree with everything you're saying. thanks for going through everything as well!

    I bought a guitar with similar specs as this one, an ALC-62 MIC with jatoba fretboard and a mahogny body. The pickups sounded muddy and the sound oversll was lacking but i liked how it looked and played so i replaced all electronics with a prewired harness from Mojotone with big 500k cts pots, pickup selector, input Jack and all that good stuff. I also replaced the pickups with a pair of seymore duncans and man what a difference. The sound is on pair with a Gibson but it took me about an additional $600-$700 to get me there. Still cheaper than a Gibson LP standard though.

    Great Video!! EMG should differentiate between 58/58X and Retro Active Fat55 in its marketing. X series, Retro Active , 57/66 ,60, and 58...Which one has the most vintage sound?

    Do these clean up well with the volume knob? I'm looking for a lower output humbucker to replace the 66 in the neck position of my les paul. I love the 57/66 set I'm using now, but it's hard to get clean tones out of either of the pickups...

    On your bridge........I have a typical Gotoh tune-O-matic that I had a string break issue with. I replaced all of the saddles with graph techs. That made a huge difference in tone quality and my string quit breaking as well (it was the G!). Also, look at what Tone Pros does with their tune-O-matic design. They have drilled and tapped a grub screw to tighten the bridge to the 2 mounting posts. I did this myself on my bridge, and it helped with tone as well. This prevents the bridge from moving around at all.

    EMGS website says that these are noiseless, are they actually noiseless or do they just have less hum then other pickups?

    • @nj1255
      @nj1255 Год назад

      They are basically noiseless. Active pickups are generally less noisy than passives, and EMG makes some of the least noisy pickups there are. The 58X is also one of EMGs lower output humbuckers which in my experience makes them less susceptible to feedback when playing through a very loud amp.

    I set out to listen to a guitar with the Resomax upgrades and only one out of three videos (not this one) even bothered to briefly play the guitar after the upgrade. They hype the hardware for over 8 mins and then fail to provide a sample of the tone miracle that's supposed to follow. Frustrating.

    Hey, thanks for the great video! I have a personal question for you. If you were to play The messiah will come again, which pick-up would you choose between EMG 81, 85, 60, and 58?

    • @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz
      @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz 2 года назад

      If I was going for a Roy Buchanan vibe, probably the 60. If I was trying to do a Gary Moore thing, probably the 58!

    • @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz
      @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz 2 года назад

      Depends on what you're playing. If you're doing djent or anything with a lot of 0-0-0-0, I'm gonna say probably not since the low end compresses in a slightly muddy way. Otherwise, it should work well.

    • @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz
      @ArmandoLopez-qt6vz 2 года назад

      New-ish. The 58 is an old design that they apparently stopped producing for a while until recently. When EMG released the X-series preamps, the 58 was one of the pickups that got it. Thanks for watching!

    • @pigxstix
      @pigxstix 2 года назад

      The 58 is the original EMG from the 70s, it's more traditional sounding. The X series is a preamp change from the original that is looser with more headroom and generally considered an improvement over non-x versions except by detuned metal players who like the original compression and tightness of the older preamps in pickups like the 81.

    I've had a Trans Black CR250 for a little over a year now. I picked it up on the recommendation of a friend and have had zero regrets. The only upgrade I've felt any need to do was to replace the stock pickups with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates kit. I can see myself playing this one for years to come with the same grin it gives me now.

    Hola! veo que has pintado con tinta de estilográfica, según comentas en el vídeo. Supongo que luego, al tocar, no te manchará los dedos de negro. Tampoco veo que hayas protegido los trastes ni los inlays, entiendo que la tinta se podrá quitar fácilmente de estas partes. Un saludo y muy buen trabajo!

    Good stuff! Often, guitar makers skimp the most on hardware, so replacing it will likely give you the greatest improvement in your axe. Better to spend less on a guitar and spend your money replacing hardware with the hardware you'd really rather have anyway. The worst is feeling stuck with expensive stuff you're not really into.

    When it comes to guitars it is all about your tone, your guitar, your sound, your way to create your sound. Many low dollar guitars are built pretty good and some deserve special treatment. Customizing is a good thing.
