With the whole starving issue last time, I feel she'd be more on top of hunting this time around, more reckless to keep everyone fed, so what happened before never happens again. I'm excited to see Opal with the pups, because I know my first litter of yearlings were very energetic about staying with the pups, and then my most recent has been quite distasteful of their kin with growling, and straight tails.

Hopefully they find a Kangal Shepherd if you want something that would and COULD fight a cougar. They’re the ones you see on farms that can murk packs of coyotes, wolves, and even brawl with bears when it comes to protecting their livestock, so that Cougar wouldn’t stand a chance if the pack gained one of those! Some other dog ideas could be: Catahoula Leoprd Dog, xoloitzcuintli, Cane Corso, Saluki, Bull Terrier, Borzoi.
