    The Acrylic Matte Medium is quite a brilliant solution for new canvases. Thank you so much for sharing! The water content of the medium shrinks the fibers whilst the acrylic resin component cures and holds them in place in turn creating a composite that also keeps moisture from permeating the bare cotton fibers as well. Really cool technique.

    • @AnastasiaMakArt

      I don’t use pouring mediums, but I know they’re a lot less viscous than matte mediums. It could be that it isn’t substantial enough to “pull” the canvas threads together and hold them over time since its viscosity is so much lower.

    good video thankyou... but I dont understand why you use varnish for your isolation coat. isnt their a specific product for isolation coat that seals the paint, so that even when varnish layers are later removed, its impossible then for any pigment to come off

    • @AnastasiaMakArt
      @AnastasiaMakArt 27 дней назад

      What you described is exactly what non-removable (a.k.a. permanent) varnish does. :) In order for it to be an isolation coat, it simply has to be clear, non-removable, non-yellowing, and preferably glossy. Keep in mind that by definition it is only called an "isolation coat" if it is then going to be covered by a layer of vanish that could be removed with mineral spirits - otherwise, it simply acts as a "sealant" or "varnish". That's why, traditionally, either permanent varnish or watered down gloss gel have been used as an isolation coat. Golden just recently came out with a product that is actually called Isolation Coat, but it's quite similar to permanent varnish.

    • @peaceforchildren4303
      @peaceforchildren4303 27 дней назад

      @@AnastasiaMakArt Ah thankyou for explaining. I get it now. That simplifies things for me a lot for the process. I think I will just stick to a few coats of permanent varnish alone... and not have to worry about the mineral spirit varnish or needing separate isolation coat. great, thankyou!

    I'm not an expert but I did it once with an expert and we applied it before any varnish, I think many varnishes dry too tacky for it to work. Also the adhesive needs to be extremely thin layer, so thin, it's hard to see, exept at an angle. Brush something else to wear out(not sure if this is the right way to say it) the brush a little bit before applying. After drying we gently dropped the leaf on top and gently rubbed or pushed it down with a cotton ball, after that lift the leaf(maybe wait a bit) and then brushed the edges with a soft brush. I got very good result, hope this helps.

      Thanks for watching! Not a silly question - paint pen is easier to “erase” before it has dried, just use some water and wipe it off. After it has dried, it can probably be gently scrubbed off with a wet sponge (as dry acrylic paint underneath is pretty durable) but you may still end up with some paint pen marks left behind. You can always touch up / cover those marks with acrylic though.

      Gloss medium should work the same way, i just never tried it myself because I always have matte in my studio. There’s a possibility of it being more sticky. Be mindful when applying gloss medium near stretcher bars, don’t put a thick layer in that gap to ensure that it doesn’t accidentally stick to wood.

    lots of great info! One thing I was wanting to know is say you've done your painting and added your paint pen but then you want to maybe add a wash or some more paint. I am assuming the paint pen will smear based on your comments about adding varnish. Have you ever coated your painting with matte medium and then painted on it some more?

    • @AnastasiaMakArt
      @AnastasiaMakArt 2 месяца назад

      You can either seal paint pen with water-based spray varnish, or add an extra coat of matte medium on top of your paint pen by rolling it on with a roller - and then do your wash / paint additions on top of that. Gently using a roller shouldn’t disturb the paint pen. (But, use a high density roller, otherwise it tends to leave spongy texture. )

    Hello Anastasia, I am revisiting this video in preparation for doing exactly that, applying matte medium to the back of my canvas. . Questions: I see how you are able to access areas under the wooden frame, but what about the sides of the canvas, since you can't reach them? and, actually, even with the foam brush, you cannot reach the very tips of the corners. So, how do you handle these areas? And, how else do you use matte medium? Thank you.

    • @AnastasiaMakArt
      @AnastasiaMakArt 3 месяца назад

      There's no need to cover sides of canvas - unless, they're sagging too, but in that case, the canvas should probably be removed and re-stretched altogether. Reaching tips of corners can be done by a different tool - like, a very skinny flat brush for example. But if we're talking about a tiny dime-sized area in the corner, then it's no big deal if it doesn't get covered. If the canvas tightens up after applying matte medium, but leaves wrinkles in a corner part that wasn't covered, then you'll want to get deeper in there to apply it where the wrinkle appeared. I use matte medium also with acrylic paint, to create matte texture for other paint layers, and for smooth application of paint pen. And, it works as glue for mounting canvas to flat panels, or for mounting paper collage over painting (but, canvas has to be pressed down with weight, in order to actually stick to a flat panel).

    • @AnastasiaMakArt
      @AnastasiaMakArt 3 месяца назад

      You can thin it out with water or acrylic medium (for example, Liquitex Matte Medium that I use so much, can work for this) - but that also means the pigmentation in paint will become thinner. You can also mix your heavy body paint with fluid paint, and that will make it less “thick” while keeping pigmentation rich. Aside from these options, there is no magic way to thin out acrylic heavy body.
