Brahms Requiem Discussion - First Movement
What an amazing experience that was to sing in such a beautiful place!
I got goose bumps
Bülow's characterization of Brahms' first symphony as Beethoven's tenth is ambivalent. From today's perspective, this remark can also be understood as a devaluation. Brahms' contribution to the further development of the symphonic form does not go beyond Beethoven and falls short of his contemporary Bruckner.
So fun!
To my mind: erschaffen is creating as in a continuous eternal process. Geschaffen is something made, and passing, ending, or ended. Does this make sense to anyone?
Your comment beginning 19 minutes is one of the best sermons on the creation of God. The difference between the material and the spiritual.
Such a nice video, thank you Dr. Ted!
can't find movements Iv v and vii. ????
Me, also.
very thoughtful
Who are the soloists?
Musicologists must also be able to make a living. But there is little need to listen to an exhaustive analysis of a composition that is destined for our musical and emotional centers. To enjoy listening to a movement of the Brahms Requiem requires prior familiarity and concentration. But listening to this dissertation does not justify the effort of staying awake.
then why are you watching this?
Watching Don Kendrick conduct is mesmerizing! This was a tremendous concert!
These commentaries are the definition of infotainment!
All the singers were off book, but not a single orchestra member.
How is Don Kendrick doing these days? Is he still doing corny German accents?
I know that "ahhh" you talk about so well. The first time I sang this masterpiece was in the summer of 1971 under the baton of Dr. Richard Lert during the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. Brahms was his godfather. Yes, he was quite elderly, but he was a brilliant conductor. And as a bonus, my father was both the chorusmaster and the baritone soloist. I've had other chances to sing this piece, but none could ever top that one. There aren't going to be any more performances conducted by someone who knew Brahms. I'm blessed to have had that experience. "Ahhh!"
Interesting video. but I beg to differ on the question of nationalism. One would like to see Brahms in the "good camp" and Wagner in the "bad camp", but Brahms was just as nationalist as Wagner (maybe even more). The creation of the requiem also falls in the German unification struggle, I am quite sure that it is one of the main reason he undertook the completion of the piece he abandoned earlier. Plus he also did few years later a "sequel" piece the "triumflied" that one could call "a German Te Deum", that was directly composed to celebrate Prussian victory over France. Both pieces are gorgeous, but there is no need to sugarcoat them. It is not an accident he did not call it a human requiem, the piece has the same ideological program as the Meistersingers by Wagner (the manuscript of which Brahms possessed himself), that is to praise German culture and heritage, to work to create a cultural union not just a political union. A noble enterprise, but that is labeled as nationalism by todays PC standards.
I am rather certain that the ceiling of Zurich Tonhalle actually contains Brahms, Beethoven and Wagner... at 7:25
This is a killer movement! Technically challenging to sing.
Thanks for the very analytical view of the 2nd movement!
When I was recovering from a near fatal injury I listened to Brahms Requîmes and felt the words and music healing me. I will forever believe Brahms healed my mind and body with his immortal “Ein Deutsches Requium”.
The music in the beginning is taken from the last movement.
5:19: Alaxander Graham Bell did NOT invent the telephone! Antonio Meucci and Philipp Reis independently invented the telephone.
Fascinating, thank you!
That was a good video from Denmark, but after it got tons of views it disappeared.
I get to participate in this beautiful piece in a few days. This video was incredibly informative. Thank you!
I wish Brahms had titled it a human requiem. imagine how many more people would feel welcomed by it.
I think the composer behind Beethoven's left shoulder is actually Wagner, not Bach.
Yes, it's definitely Richard Wagner!
I've really liked these lectures so far, but as a reformed Christian I think it's important to note that Luther's most important and heartfelt contribution to the church other than putting the Bible back in the hands of the congregation is reviving belief in the gospel that is not by works, but by faith alone. I'm sure a German "work ethic" would bare little importance to him compared to the work-less gospel of free salvation through the merits of Christ alone.
fair enough however I believe it is correct to say that Brahms was virtually an atheist and chose texts that elided dogma and reading a quotidian celebration of stoical orientation fits the man.
A great analysis, truly. Inspiring! You lost me with the Anti-Darwinism which is not relevant. But otherwise well done.
God created evolution. Case closed.
That amazing DrTed! How blessed the organization is to have him. Among others, DrTed is impossible to replace . . . for way too many reasons to list. May God bless you, one and all. ♡ Tom Osborn
DR. TED. I KNOW THIS OLD, BUT I LOVE IT. IT REALLY HITS THE SPOT FOR ME. AND I'VE REALLY MISSED YOU, TED!.
It's sad that in 1.5 years only 1,181 have watched this....while over at that idiot, Lady Gogo it's likely well into the multiple millions
It's interesting that he uses the informal "du" in this movement: ""Herr, du bist würdig zu nehmen Preis und Ehre und Kraft" and "Denn du hast alle Dinge erschaffen".
To be fair, God is always addressed as "du" in German. It's the same in English (hallowed be thy name) where "thou" used to be the informal 2nd pers. singular pronoun.
@@simonthelen5910 Interesting. Didn't know that.
"Menlo Park, California." When Brahms walked? New Jersey is more likely. Anyway, thanks for a fine introduction to the Brahm's Requiem, one of my all time favorites.
Really appreciated the first 3 episodes where you surveyed the landscape of the requiem and movements 1and 2. Can’t find the rest. Hopefully they are not lost.
