The ammunition used for this weapon is 9 mm Parabellum, a pistol ammunition still commonly used today. Due to a complicated mechanism on the weapon and the great weight that made the weapon unwieldy, it was not a success. The MP 43 was developed as a further development of the MP 40, but this weapon was soon developed into an automatic carbine. Since the weapon proved successful, later variants were renamed the Sturmgewehr 44. At first this distribution was only to platoon and group commanders but after German troops encountered Soviet units in combat whose main armament consisted of submachine guns instead of rifles and encountered problems fighting them in close combat (such as in urban terrain), units were created whose main armament was the MP 40 instead of the Kar 98k repeating rifle. Often somewhat incorrectly named Schmeisser after Hugo Schmeisser who designed the MP 18. However, he was not involved in the design of the MP 40.
