The museum is housed in the elegant and beautifully restored Sir Harry Oakes Chateau, the home built in 1929 by the founder of the prosperous Lake Shore Mine. Explore our past, pioneers and prospectors, miners and millionaires, native legends, sports heroes, wildlife, and works of art. This page will feature videos highlighting the people, places, artifacts and photographs that tell the story of Kirkland Lake.
Weddings and Celebration - "Kirkland Lake: A Jewish History"
This video is a selection of wedding related images and audio recordings from the Community Stories exhibit, "Kirkland Lake: A Jewish History".
Local photographer Eddie Duke (1918-2008) was a member of this Jewish community, and spent many years documenting the people and events of Kirkland Lake, as well as Jewish life and customs in this small northern town.
In this clip, he shares both his memories and the photos taken at the Josephine Kussner - David Duke wedding in 1938, and the reception after Ethel Duke's wedding in the Adath Israel Synagogue in 1950.

My stepson owns one of sir Harry's houses in Broad Oak, near Heathfield, was one of Sir Harry’s luxury retreats in England when he was not jetting round the world,apparently he hid gold in his houses but not found anything yet ,I only found you page because I looked him up

I remember that menu - my uncle was a bartender there for years, passed in 1969.
Great work, Sara! As an ex-Kirkland Laker, living in South Africa for the past 40 years, Sir Harry's story has always intrigued me. I visited the Museum in 2021 on a rare visit to KL and really enjoyed it.

Heh, I have painting I want to donate to the museum. It's a painting from the château that was won in a poker game by Harry Trulof of Chaput. Harry didn't have the cash on hand to cover the hand so he offered any photo from the château and then lost the hand. I've done a little research and date it as 2 to 300 yes old... but I'm no pro. If your interested I can bring it next trip home.
