Sayaka was, of all girls in PMMM, the one most like myself. Her hot-blooded desire to fight evil, her belief that magic could be used for good things, if you know how to useAll it, her dedication to saving the people of Mitakihara city, these are all similar to things I've said and/or done at comparable moments in my life. That includes her ultimate fatal flaw, the lack of belief in her own value, which you can see already from Ep. 4 on, when she wonders why it couldn't have been her to lose control of her hands in that accident instead of Kyōsuke, who actually had something meaningful to do with his. Sayaka wanted to be liked, she wanted to deserve being liked; ultimately, she wasn't sure she did. She wanted to be a hero, but she also wanted others to respect, even love, her for it. Because this desire for love and respect is not described as part of what a true hero should aspire to, she felt guilty for it. Her self-doubt, which was already strong, became increasingly stronger throughout the series. She couldn't see the value she had -- her smiles, her laughs, the affection she inspired in those around her; all those things seemed less important to her than her perceived flaws. She became a magical girl to save others and protect Mitakihara city; but her self-doubts made her particularly vulnerable to the reveal that magical girls are lyches whose soul resides in a shiny jewel. All her self-doubt crystallized around that; all the bad things she thought about herself became worse when she no longer could see herself as fully human, when it became impossible for her to "ask Kyōsuke to kiss her when she's like this..." Like all teens who are too fat, or too thin, or too stupid, or too dull, or wear glasses, or... she hated herself. She didn't see how much she struggled, how hard she tried; she could only see, as Kyūbē informed her, that she had little talent. Yes, it is true that pretty much all other magical girls in this story had more power than she did, but that is not how you judge a person's worth, or courage. And yet that is what she did: she let her self-image go down and down, until "nothing could be good for her anymore," until even Madoka, who had always stood by her side, is now "conveniently overlooking the fact" that she could help her by becoming the very thing she was so ashamed to be... Oh Sayaka, Sayaka, my sister-in-arms, my own self made fictional character. You didn't have to hurt yourself so much, just because you couldn't feel the pain. You didn't have to think so low of yourself, just because other magical girls had more power. You didn't have to think your luck was your fault, just because Kyōsuke lost the use of his hands. And yet you, so very human, allowed yourself to think all those wrong things. And you eventually sacrificed everything... everything... for nothing. For no real reason. Sayaka, Sayaka, you break my heart, every single time I think of you. I wish so much I could have known you and done something to help you. I will never forget you.
