New Orleans On 16MM Black and White Film (TRI-X)
Went to New Orleans for thanksgiving and decided to shoot this roll of Tri-X film on my Bolex H-16. The widescreen shots that appear in the middle of the video were shot in 2X anamorphic, this was my first time trying anamorphic 16mm. This was also my first time shooting black and white 16mm film, and I think there is a chance the roll was expired..? It turned out okay, but yeah here it is.

A roll of 16mm footage I got over spring break with a Bolex H16 S. Used a reflex zoom lens, but the camera itself is non-reflex. This was my first time shooting with any sort of film, it was a great experience and felt very rewarding.

Fantastic work - truly incredible color work, shot choice, camera movement, ah! everything. keep it up please
@@AndrewMendoza-et6ho thank you so much! Means a lot to hear
Ever seen Down By Law?
@@SeanTanktop I have not, do you recommend?
How’d u power the camera tho
I powered it using a small power box called a Sony HVA-200 Power AC Adaptor, it plugs into the camera directly, and that plugs into the wall. The power box also strangely has a video out, which is how I was able to record the picture.
@@finnbenischek3170 so hypothetically speaking… this can’t be set up portably?
@@lengthoftheeye hypothetically no it cannot, I still haven’t even been able to test it outdoors. In theory if you had a smallish portable AC power battery you could keep it in a backpack, but it would be a pretty crazy setup. I believe there are better ways to power it portably but I never discovered them.
Вітаю. Дуже крута робота. Скажи будь ласка, у тебе є інстаграм?
I actually felt like a movie had begun. I'd like to see the rest.great job.
Very cool. Well done 👍🏻
@finnbenischek3170 I think youtube keeps deleting my reply, but I found one in my city for $30. Missing a power supply though
Was searching footage of this camera out of curiousity from looking at fb marketplace. It's seems like such a gamble with all the untested ones in the market. And you put this camera to its maximum potential with how sharp the picture is.
How much is it listed for on marketplace? I got this one for 70 bucks
@@finnbenischek3170 There is one in my city for 30. Doesn't come with a power supply. Ebay is where I'm not finding any tested ones that works.
@@finnbenischek3170 Seeing one in my city for $30 CAD. Doesn't come with the power supply though
what was your budget for the film stocks and development?
This was shot with two rolls of film, costing me about 200 USD in total. Including processing and scanning.
Amazing work! The shot at 0:52 is absolutely mesmerizing.
These reflex lenses (Angenieux 71-68mm?) are VERY hard to find. How did you get that?

Niceeeeee
That was great! 16mm is such a gorgeous way to capture the feeling created here. You clearly know how to use the medium well. I love the idea of the digital switch at the end...very inspired trick...
Thank you so much!
Stunning, I gotta try this
so sick, how did you achieve that ghost framing effect?
With these older digital cameras the sensor gets burned in for a few seconds when bright lights hit it, so the camera naturally produces the ghost trails.
@@finnbenischek3170 awesome, thankyou!
Jaw dropping. Film has such magic ❤
1:50 shot is amazing! Did you get that on the zoom lens or zoom more in post?!
Thank you! I got it on the zoom lens, using a close focus diopter to get closer than the lens would have natively allowed me to focus.
What diopter did you use mate?
@@spaceyaliens I used a Vivitar +2 strength diopter. I’d recommend getting one of their full sets which comes with +1, +2, +4 and +10 strength factors. They are very affordable on B&H, around 10-15 USD for the whole pack depending on the thread size you get.
Visuals look clean! Well shot. Well done.
insane
Man I really love Ektachrome..
Beautiful
I loved watching this! How much should one budget these days for film, processing and scanning for a film of your length?
All in all the price of the film + processing + scanning of 1 roll (which is how much I used for this video) costs about 130$.
what. WHAT

incredible work
Do another
A nice piece of film work with some impressive shots. Other than how-to videos, I would take something that looks like this over almost anything shot on digital. I'm envious. Great job!
old dune vibes
Cute! BTW, I like the unknown fiber or hair from the 2092 at the right bottom corner!😄
Thought this was a culinary video with the way you were COOKING
Nice, very well done
Well done. Love to see it (Even though were experiencing it through digital!)
You ARE UNREAL -- This is amazing!
Thanks!
Dude, this is so sick! I’ve got the same camera, I had no idea that someone could get it to look like this. What kind of analog to digital converter do you use to capture it?
Thanks! I used a AC power converter for the camera called a HVA-200. That little converter has a RCA video out. I used a RCA to HDMI converter cable to send the signal to an Atomos Ninja V monitor, which has built in recording capabilities. I simply recorded using the external monitor onto an SSD!
@@finnbenischek3170 Awesome, thanks dude! Keep it up
Dude this might be the sickest thing I’ve seen shot on 16mm on youtube. You perfectly captured the vibe from the original Mad Max. This just proves to me that a feature film would look incredible shot like this. Did you shoot sound speed on this? Or was it all added in post?
Thank you so much!! All sound was added completely in post, although we did record a few wild sound effects on location.
Dude this is a huge inspiration to me. I've been wanting to shoot on film so bad but I got scammed out of a KG-3 on eBay almost a year ago lol but when I get either a KG or a Bolex I hope what I make is even a quarter as good. Maybe an unexpected question but how do I go about making costumes look realistic? I plan on making a cyberpunk type short film soon and I need a similar utilitarian look to your main character
Thank you so much man that really means a lot! I'm sorry to hear about you getting scammed out of a camera thats awful!! For the costumes I would say always start out by looking for used clothing to start filling out the costume. For this particular costume all of the cloth and such that he is wearing were purchased at a goodwill, including the box "backpack" on his back. The backpack straps were made of belts from goodwill as well. Once you have everything, if you want to make a gritty costume like this, I'd recommend further weathering everything by dying all of the bright colored components in a mixture of very dark instant coffee and black tea, soak everything for a couple hours and it should get a nice weather tinge to it. The only thing that was brand new in this costume were the goggles which i purchased off of temu for 4 bucks, which were also weathered in the coffee tea mixture and scratched up with a razor a bit to add scratches and weathering. Just think of ways you can add depth to a costume and have different layers!
This was pretty cool. I haven't seen anything like this on RUclips.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
@@finnbenischek3170 For sure! It'll be cool to see if you shoot more film! God bless!
