Agreed. But I think Elon would definitely see $500MM in cash. He's an owner. Most owners do not have a lot of liquidity. This is an "argument" I have with many people bemoaning the hyper wealthy who control assets but don't necessarily have a ton of cash on which to pay the proposed tax on wealth. Buffett has a lot of stock and while everyone knows the cash pile in Berkshire Hathaway, no one knows how much cash he actually sits on personally?

3.3% is 1/30th. Of course you can safely withdraw 1/30th of your portfolio every year for 30 years, but that seems pretty pessimistic. It’s assuming that your investment rate of return exactly matches inflation, so 2.5% long term, which is much lower than historical return from stocks or bonds. Over 200 years the average returns for both assets classes is around 6%. In recent years it’s more like 9% for the total stock market and 3.5% for bonds. Approaches that increase withdrawals in good years and reduce them, or keep them steady, in bad market years probably have higher safe withdrawal rates than Bengin-style approaches that mechanically increase withdrawals without regard to investment returns.

Tax rates are so low historically speaking - not sure on Ben's example of someone in the 24% marginal being wary of converting/contributing on a Roth basis. The math almost always supports building tax-free assets - even for high earners. Seems overly optimistic to think rates will be as low as they are now in the future.

It is difficult to build a substantial portfolio solely through speculation and market timing. Once you have a substantial portfolio, you can go ahead and try riskier strategies since you already have adequate protection.

As a former nursing home administrator those LTC insurance policies are not very good. Better to have a HSA and keep your receipts. That said, if people think they will trust their millions while they get on MediCaid. Watch the attorney general’s office crack that trust and take all that money back plus reasonable fees (all of it). Choosing LTC should be just as deliberate as choosing your college or your house.

Perfect timing. 2012 Chrysler 200 was just totaled by a newer driver. Bought back from insurance for $828. Bought parts for $295, labor for $400. Big body shops wanted almost $7200 to repair. Keeping as a spare and buying a brand new 2024 Chevy Trax fully loaded for $28,685 out the door. Just makes sense. Never been one to suggest buying a new vehicle off the lot but it’s hard to beat in 2024 if you shop smart.

Should've mentioned that EV insurance can be much higher. I suppose because they're afraid of liability since there is no way to determine if a battery has been damaged in a minor accident. Sometimes they scrap the whole car rather than risk a future catastrophic fire.

Thanks for having him on. I used his ideas to compare the annual cost of ownership of different vehicles. It turns out that it is cheaper to hang onto our current car even though it is a 2007 gas guzzler because most of the depreciation has already occurred. We’ve had virtually no maintenance and repair costs since we bought it 6 years ago (it’s a Toyota of course). The thing just refuses to die.

He states several times that indexing is leaving money on the table but it has been proven many times that active investing long term rarely beats the market so it leaves me quite skeptical although I like his value investing mindset.
