I have been experimenting with this method. The synthetic dye more is what makes the spots on your doll but sometimes the kit itself will have a scuff mark that grabs the dye and makes that mark. Don't use the dye more use the regular Ritz synthetic dye. Next you need Masking fluid to paint on the places you do not want dye. You already figured it out, but you need more water in the pot. You still need to apply paint to the doll as the dye will seep into the vinyl and the color will fade.
