Solving the U.S. Flag "wrapping around itself" issue with DIY "FLAGnets" (magnets for your flag)
Are you like me and get frustrated seeing your prized U.S. flag, AKA OLD GLORY wrapped around herself every time you come home? Well, barring a tornado, tsunami, or hurricane force winds, this little tip will help you to solve the problem 99% of the time!
I spent less than 20 minutes, and less than $7.
I bought two packs of ceramic block magnets from Harbor Freight (item 97504) valued at $0.99 a pack and a roll of Professional Grade SCOTCH brand 35 red vinyl electrical tape at Lowe's for $3.58, and came up with a really great solution to solve this annoying problem.
I tried to paint the magnets at first using Rust-Oleum gloss protective enamel red paint and it was just too messy. After I ...

DIY Fence Latch Repair

Our latch broke on our access gate to the side of my home so I went out and bought a new one. Unfortunately the previous lock release mechanism, although still in tact, wouldn't fit the new latch. I decided to make my own from miscellaneous parts I had in my "excess tools/parts" box in the garage. Here is a parts list: 1. Handle: Leftover Bathroom Sink Drain Kit from an older installation 2. Rather than toss out our broken Keurig Tray, I decided to fix it. I hope this motivates you to repair your broken items around the house rather than throw them out. All you need is a little ingenuity!
"CHANGIN' MY WAYS"

I was noodling around and wrote this for the explicit purpose as an audition song in 2009 for the Praise and Worship band at my church at the time. I like the guitar part and the words but not happy with the vocal arrangement or timing. Granted it was a rough draft, but I still believe it has potential to be a good song based in the message, which is basically, realizing changes need to be made...
I will try this, sir 🙏🏻
that's great until you get smacked in the face with said flagnet...
Do they bang in your wall
I have two heavy-duty magnets the wind blows them off.
Thank you so very much! This worked to perfection.:)
Genius! Magnets are SO useful! I once fixed my car's breaking light using 6 stacked magnets! Anyways, thank you, I just used your idea with my own flag with just using two pair of magnets, they were sufficiently heavy for the flag and so there is no fear of two sets of magnets sticking to one another
I use to use magnets but the wind kept knocking it off when it hit the top of the fence. Makes noise when it hits too. So I just got a longer pole with rotating rings and it no longer furls over the fence and gets stuck. Rotates nicely and never tangles. If it does tangle the next blast of wind fixes it.
Beautiful.
Awesome video ❤ it’s been driving me crazy, thank you and god bless you and your family! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! Love the Mickeys as well. 😃😎🍾🧪
Will strong winds make the magnets come off?
Seems to be a solution I’ll try it. Thank you so much.
Pretty cool 😎 to see the seals 🦭
First significant wind those flagnets will become flying magnets lol!
Hi Keith, I'm trying to solve the same problem and found your video. Is there a reason you used magnets? Would any other metallic item work the same? I'm trying to understand if the magnetic property works here, or just that the magnets were the right size and provided enough weight to keep the flag from furling. Thanks.
You try any other item and let us know.
The attention to sound quality and consistency was so bad it made the video nearly useless. I skimmed around the video to find the part that showed where the magnets were placed.
thank you
Hey buddy you randomly came up in my youtube feed! I wish I would have recorded this one for you. It sounds killer!
Tried exact same magnets, same positions, and everything...east TX must have stronger winds. Mine fall off minimum twice a day, this time a year atleast, but flag hasn't been twisted so guess its still working
Great idea! Mine always ends up in the gutter.
I was having a similar problem, so I just made a flag out of plywood. Works great! Of course I had to beef up the pole a bit.
Awesome!!! God bless you and Old Glory! Now I can retire my poor shredded flag and put up my new one from Annin. Made in the USA! Thanks again for the great tip.
Thanks for sharing I have a flag on the flag pole and on a crazy windy day in the bay area of California the flag will wrap around the pole. It drive's my crazy because it will stay wrapped up until the wind untangle it's self.
Great work Keith 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Alabama United States
I found these magnetic flag weights on Amazon which looks promising. www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Waterproof-Carrying-Stopping-American/dp/B08ZXH1CL5/ref=asc_df_B08ZXH1CL5/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=520027530630&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10330756660866090963&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1020743&hvtargid=pla-1352196122320&psc=1
I’m going to the store right now to buy the magnets and tape. Thank you for this great idea. I’m so tired of noticing my flag tangled and needing to reach up and spin the pole until it’s untangled.
Magnets are a poor salution if you have a metal pole or gutters near by.
Awesome! Hope nobody comes out that door on a windy day. 😆
Thank you for this info. We have had trouble with our flag blowing up in roof gutter and ready to runbto the store to implement your creative idea! God bless you and God bless America!!
Thanks! I’ll give this a shot. I tried attaching a small pole around the bottom of a flag I have to weigh it down and it tore it so this seems like a much better idea.
Hotty toddy
Has a very Bret Michaels vibe to it. Really good. 😊
That’s creative, very smart use of common parts.
Thanks Keith!
Can't wait to try it!!
Thats disrespectful to the flag....you must be antifa
Great idea! I’ll will be buying magnets now. Thank you!!
I love the magnets and red masking tape idea! I just ordered the magnets and tape on amazon...10.00 total to save my sanity having to unwrap my flag every day. Thank you!!!
..until a real high winds blows in, and those magnets turn into flying shrapnel! ..and God forbid if anyone is walking by the flag when that really high wind blows in! People don't understand (until it's too late), the velocity of these weights flying through the air, and the damage they can do to people and structures! lol For this to really work, you would first want the flag always away from people and structures. Then you would have to calculate (in pounds) the worst wind pressure in the area which you live, and figure out how many pounds of strength your magnets would have to be, to stay together, and not fly off the flag during those higher wind bursts of pressure. But more importantly, are the magnets flying through the air on the flag! Anyone hit by these could seriously lose an eye or worse! It would definitely puncture vinyl siding ..and dent aluminum siding!
I agree, cool idea but pretty naive to put it politely.
Get a grip...
Love it my friend!
Thank You thank you thank you thank you!!! God Bless!!!!
I tried that but the magnets kept flying off
You could always sew on a little "pocket" for the magnets.
Same here but I am thinking the magnets I used were not big enough
Thank you for helping a fellow American out!
Good Job man, Thanks!
John Quest thanks!!!
@@KeithGrommes No problem I appreciate it, i was able to get away with lighter round magnets bc my flag was lighter material then yours but it worked! The other fixes are more time consuming, and you have to buy a decent amount of stuff. Paid 2.39 for my pack. Thanks John
Thank you. I have to try this!!
Henry Esquivel it works!
Henry Esquivel definitely!
Thanks, Keith! God bless you!
Maria Pappano you’re welcome! Glad it helped you!!!
The magnets flew off my flag and one hit the hood of my car. Fail.
Ross Johnston sorry that happened to you. I believe there’s certain considerations that must be evaluated before doing this. The vicinity of your car during high winds in relation to the flag, the strength of the magnets vs wind strength, etc.. it’s definitely something each person will need to test based on their location. Again, sorry the video wasn’t more helpful and sorry you had a negative experience.
Yes, that's what happens eventually when a real wind blows in lol...
I’m old school, I untwist it by hand
JJ W bravo!
First of all: Thanks for sharing what worked to 'color' the magnets and what *didn't* work. I don't have the red tape, and certainly would have defaulted to the paint that I have.... Second: Thanks for discussing the placement of the magnets. Again, what worked and what didn't. This is very helpful.
B Muldoon outstanding! Glad it helped you!
Where did you buy the magnets
Rich Mr O I bought them at Harbor Freight!
