Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska: July 2024 Polar Plunge
Hey everyone! So, my husband Mark flew up to Barrow, Alaska, for his first visit, and we decided to take the ultimate icy challenge-the polar plunge in the Arctic Ocean! 🥶 The water was so cold it felt like we were swimming in a giant ice bath, but guess what? Once I got out, I wasn't cold at all! Crazy, right? Now we're debating if we should brave the freeze and do it all over again next year. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments! The water in Point Lay is drinkable from the tap unless they are doing maintenance and then the boil notice is a precaution because of open lines. Other than that, the water is fine to drink out of the tap.

    I was listening to their radio station last night, just stumbled across it while exploring the radio map. It’s so cute how niche and close knit this place is. The girl talked about the opening times of Church, someone was selling a Parka for $80 and even listed job listings. It was cute to hear. And I’m all the way from Australia 🇦🇺 Much love.

    43 doesnt sound that bad. Didnt know it could be that warm so far north. $7+ for gas? I dont get it. Doesnt the oil come from that area? I would have thought it would be dirt cheap instead.

    • @AkBiomedTech
      @AkBiomedTech 4 месяца назад

      oil is extracted from the north slope area, but there’s no refinery to process it into gasoline locally. Consequently, gasoline has to be transported in, which can increase its cost. It typically arrives either by barge or plane.

    • @AkBiomedTech
      @AkBiomedTech 5 месяцев назад

      Hey there, despite favorable weather conditions between the villages that day, our travel routes are subject to the airline's discretion. It seems they aim for fuel-efficient paths based on factors like passenger numbers, cargo volume destined for each village, and the availability of aircraft and pilots on any given day.

      In Barrow, from late November to late January, they have what's called the "polar night." It means the sun stays hidden for a while, bringing continuous darkness. But, don't picture pitch-black all the time - there's still a touch of twilight, providing a subtle glow.
