My SF Bay Area father was at an astronomy seminar in a small mountain town over 20 years ago. As he was walking in town, someone waved at him. He was taken aback and unsure what was going on, until he finally realized, "Oh, he's just being friendly!" So scary!!!

That's literally my experience going from Northern Virginia to South Carolina in a work related trip. In the hotel I was staying, 3 strangers came up to be within 10-15 minutes saying "good morning sir", making me wonder for a full hour if they may have mistaken me for their boss... And then when a new guest came and started talking to receptionist with southern accent, I realized why.

In Noway first time, i got a lot of weird glances after a "hi" while walking alone out and about. Then a friend told me if you do that, people will think you're nuts.

You're telling me Londoners don't greet strangers?

Come to South Africa. We greet EVERYONE. Even in the bathroom...

Funny I lived in Norfolk for a few years and returned to London saying Morning. People thought I was Ko-Ko.

It is true. I was in London on vacation from the U.S. with my wife and on the train ride into London I made the mistake of saying good morning to a stranger and he looked at like he had two heads. Being from the Bx NYC I told him if he can’t be friendly he should go screw himself.

Remind me to avoid London. I can't stand places where being miserable is expected.

Wow, you would think this is just Londoners but. This is people in all cities basically. The bigger it is, the unfriendlier they seem to become. Like they just are too overstimulated and cant spare any more of themselves to talk to people. Its actually quite unnerving that people have grown so cold to each other, that speaking to one another is more a chore, than it is a joy.

If you dont know England you wont realise how true this is: i recently moved from London to the Lake district ( Top north) and yes… everyone you see will great you. Something unheard of in Londonistan, as it has now become.
