I live in northern Virginia but made a point to visit this layout while on a cross country road trip a few years ago. It's very impressive. It represents Oregon in terms of scenery and theme however. I'd love to see a large layout representing Colorado Rockies or Utah Canyons.

There are 4 things I look for in a model railroad design. 1. Composition of the scene. Landscape shaping hills and building placement. (Like a painting- it must be organized for visual interest) 2. Interesting track work. Arrangement of switches and diamonds etc. 3. Bridge sites. Interesting structures and natural depressions in the landscape etc. Often multiple levels can increase interest. 4. Reverse curves. All by themselves reverse curves can create interest just in a section of the layout where there are no other visual interest. Of course all of this has to be bundled into a comprehensive operation scheme. Particularly a logical linear progression along the line and staging yards. Small or large. I think if these criteria are kept in mind a layout can be very interesting to build and operate. Have fun!!🚂

I mostly model modern freight but I love seeing old freight trains modeled. Steam power is such an awesome sight

Congrats. I see that you very carefully chosen to put together WWII train material. Starting with black face cab forward, Pullman marked cars. However I am curious if SP had ever have Solarium cars in their trains.

So, how you are moving The Lark on main line these cars are very heavy. Are you double heading with a couple of GS 4? Have ever Cab Forwards powered The Lark?

Just purchased a Challenger Imports 4-10-2 SP-1 and GS-1 looking forward to converting them to DCC

I don't know if running trains at that length on a scale layout makes it so they have to run slow so they don't derail, but boy were they running slow, like 25 mph. Uphill, i can understand, seeing contemporary videos show some trains screaming and straining their way up, but downhill? They should be going at a pretty good clip. Twice, i heard someone tell the operators to move it up. This is one of my favorite layouts. I like the setting, the rail companies that operate there, fantastic layout, and really nice video on it. Thanks!
