Kiwi on a Bike
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 24 окт 2021
Sit back and relax to an easy watching adventure ride on my motorbike and overnight camping in these stunning back country mountains here in the South Island of New Zealand. I will be looking to post footage up of many amazing and remote places as I explore them.
Plan B - Got to ride a KTM500!
Went for a group ride with @TheBadIdeaBros that originally was supposed to be Plan A to ride up the Old Le Bons track, however when we got there it was closed off for some reason. We ended up just exploring around other parts of Banks Peninsula as well as down to the lighthouse at Akaroa Head. Then headed over the Peraki Saddle and crossed Birdlings Flat shingle bar. Back up via Western Valley Rd and into Diamond Harbour and then back home.
A great day out getting to catch up with some top riding blokes!

Riding a Grade 5 Track with Two Broken Ribs!

Okay, strap in for this ride if you're just another average adventure rider like myself. This track may be easy for the advanced enduro riders, but for most others like myself, this track certainly had its challenges - hence the unofficial name which most people refer this track as the 'Awakino Challenge'. I managed to make it to the Dusty Butt 2024 ride which is over 1,400km of adventure ridin...
Solo adventure ride on the amazing Porika Track, NZ

Had an opportunity to escape away for a solo adventure ride back in October 2023 to do a series of tracks. This was the first time I did the Porika track in the Upper South Island of New Zealand. I really enjoyed this track! Apart from it being an amazing day weather wise, it was also not too muddy so I picked the right time to do it. Amazing views and scenery through the forest track. A must d...

Taking a ride through the Otematata Station for the first time. This is a private farm station with amazing scenery and old historic private huts. It was great to head out with some familiar riding mates for a 3 day adventure ride in this area over the summer holidays back in late Dec 2023. This track ends up joining part of the Oteake Conservation Reserve where we look to stay at Ida Railway H...

Why I chose the Honda CRF300L over the 300L Rally? (Mods & Accessories)

Finally got around to posting about my new bike swap. I had been riding the Honda CRF300L Rally for over 18 months, but the more off-roading I did I felt I needed to try the CRF300L. As soon as I rode it, I loved it! So I now have one and swapped it out for my Rally. In this video I talk about the accessories and modifications I have made to make the bike better when out adventure riding. I hav...

Your bike setup is exactly how i want mine! Just bought the D606 front n rear, also got the pico, but it is so small, what exactly do u put in it? It wont fit my S23
I bought the 300L over the Rally because I don't like how far out the front clip sits on the Rally..it's really odd looking when directly compared to the 300L..then I did all the mods with rims being the last upgrade I'm currently working on..OEM hubs are cheap, DID, Warp 9 or Tusk Impact rims all around the same cost for budget minded HD DIY rims..Big bore Dominator exhaust, tune, gears and X chain , narrow DID..looks and ride went stellar when compared to the offering at my local Honda Dealer..biggest improvement was suspension , tune needs then raised fat bar steering so standing and technical becomes viable.. brush beater, weekend warrior or summer trip ..it all can be done on the little Honda..just depends in how you set up your ride for the task at hand.
Its always interesting to see how another 300 enthusiast personalises his bike. That was an interesting little chat. We met briefly at Kurow service station on day 1 of the Dusty Butt. I'm a bit annoyed not remembering your name. I thought its Darryl. Perhaps you could correct me if I'm wrong. By now you're back to 100% after that nasty fall you experienced. I'm booked on the ferry February 4th 2025 until Feb 28. I''ll come down to the Otemata via the west coast this time. I intend riding the Kurow to Hut Creek Hut as a start to the area. Stay safe and hope to catch up with some time in the future. I forgot to disagree with your l vs the rally. Coming down from the Nth Island on long black roads the rally gives me the weather protection I demand. Cheers.
Please don't upload SDR as fake HDR, it makes it hard to watch
I love the rally with the total exception of the goody ugly headlights 🤮. Hinda need to fix that finally
THanks for the video but if I'm coming by car (with surron) where do I actually park and enter this trail?
Best to come from Mt Buster Rd and I believe there is a car park at the end where you can park. Best to check on the DOC website on the Oteake Conservation Reserve Area which should have more details.
@@kiwionbike Awesome, thanks!
Are the ring and attachment on the other side included with the bags at the time of purchase?
No, my bike didn’t have any mount points so I ended up using a Kriega OS Velcro ring mount.
I'm even more disappointed I missed it now! What a day. What was the grassy track at 28min?
Bottom from Purau up Bayview Road. It is actually part of Bayview Road. I've always struck walkers, mud and I think a horse once as well in there. It's fairly steep.
For a failed plan, this really did turn out to be a bloody good day of riding! Nice to be able to see the ride, I didn't realise you were filming all day, but glad you did! 😁
Managed to bring 3 batteries with me which lasted the whole day which was great!
Great video. Ho do you arrange to stay at the camp, do you need to book in advance?
Yeah we had to book in advance. Details are on the adventure guide website or you should be able to google the contact details.
Beyond me. Well done Nathan.
Cheers Charlie! Keen to catch up again on a future ride with you
Hard day at the office.
I did this track in the opposite direction in a 4wd quite a few years ago It looks impossible for anything than a bike now ( and not very tempting either!)
Wow, good effort! I can't imagine the pain picking up the bike with broken ribs! Were you camping on the ride? You seem to be carrying full luggage which would have made the whole thing even harder 😊 the others only have a small tail pack on the back
Yeah I looked back at video when I was editing it and putting it together that it all made sense why I was struggling harder than I would normally do. In regard to the luggage, yeah I had luggage for a 5 day trip to do the Dusty Butt as well as a couple more days for riding. The luggage itself wasn't too much of an issue on the bike once riding it, but it does make it a bit more of an effort to get the bike up from a fall.
Man that looks like hard work. Awesome ride/riding!
Yep was definitely one of my harder rides. It will be interesting to compare when I ride it again to see if it's easier now that my ribs are mended :)
I'm just about to upload my version of the same. Bad luck ole son. Hope you're well on the way to 100% again. I also had a rib broken, I had my handle bar taken out by a passing rider. Watch this space.
I remember catching up with you at Kurow just before I went up Awakino and didn't see you after that, so looking forward to seeing the video on how things turned out.
Time and weather hasn't treated this track well since I rode it two up fully loaded on Z1000J in the 90's. Good work.
I'm sorry, but I can't give this a like. The wind noise made the video pretty much useless.
Ya missed the magnificent veiw from the look out half way down plonker
Heard that decent was steep, could see it in the video and normally cameras flatten the view, much respect.
That's a great ride. Went up there years ago. Just discovered your channel. Good stuff. Subbed
Nice
Boy the first half of the road has taken a caning kiwi. You can see a lot more of the scenery coming down jon the Rotoroa side than I could. Nice shot of your bike at the lake. Well done.
Good effor doing that solo! Looks like a fun track 😄
Thanks! Yeah took my time a bit more being solo and, in a way, it made me enjoy the scenery more also. It's a really good track to do.
Bloody well done. You didn't fall off once. I can guarantee that it would have been a different result for me on my G650GS Sertao. I am pleased I gave it a miss when I was there earlier in the year.
Yeah it is a track you definitely want to do in dry conditions also or I can see it getting crazy pretty fast in muddy conditions! The angles on the video don't really do it justice on how steep some of those sections are. Glad I have a smaller bike
@@kiwionbike Yes, the camera never really shows it in its true form. Even some of those easier parts looked quite bad with the deep ruts etc.
Yeah, I had the GS 650 Dakar and I wouldn't want to do it on that although it'd do it, I did it on a T7 in April and was fun certainly rougher than it looks on camera. Well worth doing next time you're thru there.
"Wet Bumpy Road Ahead!" Thanks for the ride! I enjoyed every bit of it. Beautiful country there!
Thanks for the comment! Yes it was definitely one of my highlight rides to do. It was great weather that day as well.
What was the high range with the weather station please?
I live in nz ❤❤❤
Awesome vid mate. What tyres you running on the crf ,
D606 120/90/18 on rear and D606 on front as well. Really love them and have no issues with them at all. I keep my tyre pressure at around 18 psi. I don’t go any lower than that on the trails and have never had a puncture on them yet.
Great vid , well done 👍
Great footage, pity you didn't give an indication what your route was!!
Sorry for not replying earlier. It was in the Mt Buster and Mt Kyeburn ranges between Ida Valley Railway Hut and Mt Kyeburn route
I am still waiting to hear why you prefer the L over the Rally? It looks like the Rally has more wind protection, a larger front brake and larger fuel capacity. That would lead be to believe it’s a better adventure bike. The L looks to be more of a dual sport. I guess it depends on what type of riding you do. Based on what you’ve done to your bike, you should have the Rally.
Oops! Must have missed your earlier comment sorry! I did own a CRF300 Rally for over a year and it's a great bike, but honestly you don't lose anything by going with the CRF300L if you get the acerbis 14L fuel tank mod. I have no issues with riding it on the open road for 2-3 hours. The wind breaker I think is over-rated as it doesn't really make a big difference in my honest opinion. As I like to do more back country and off roads, the CRF300L suits me better as it is more narrow and slightly lighter. Plus I think it looks better overall. Just my opinion though, and I'm sure anyone who buys a rally will have a great time on that bike also. Hope this reply helps!
I've decided to get my license and I'm thinking this exact bike, the CRF Rally. How does it go on the highway? I don't want to be on the highway, I want to take it on South Island tracks like this, but can it keep up okay at 100 to get where I want to go? I'm in Dunners, so it's always going to be some 100km rides to get to cool tracks.
I honestly would go with the CRF300L especially if you are going to do more offroad trails. It's perfectly fine on the open road and can easily do 125+kmph if needed. Let me know how you get on and thanks for the comment!
@@kiwionbike You're not the first person I've asked about the Rally to say go with the 300L, in my mind they're the same bike but the rally has a bigger tank and a windscreen but are there subtle differences I'm missing? I like the idea of a bit of wind protection since one thing I plan on doing fairly regularly is the ride from Dunedin to Nelson in a day on SH1. I'm also considering bikes like the Himalayan 450 and KLR 650 (which I'm worried is a bit too big and heavy for a new rider on tracks like this).
Hands down, the CRF300l is a do all bike with a few mods. I will never get rid of mine 😁
Definitely, yeah I'm really happy with my setup. It's also affordable compared to other bikes and their comparitive setups.
That may be a better choice in NZ but here in the middle of the US we have to travel to find decent off road motocamping. I like the extra wind protection and range. The funky cool headlights are a bonus for me too! 8)
Fair enough. Yeah, if you are regularly having to travel 3-4hrs then a wind visor would help. I honestly haven't noticed a big difference myself though after trading in my CRF300 Rally. Those funky headlights are definitely unique :)

Cold blue light from that Sun Simulator😮
outstanding footage!!we did that station ride as part of one of john nicks 5 day adventure rides in 2005,also did a trail ride on the next station over in 08-09 ish. you had perfect weather for it!!!. incredible place to be!!
What a stunning video ,, great stuff well done
Thanks for the comment! Appreciate the feedback
So good to see riders stopping to LOOK at the stunning scenery and appreciating it instead of going hell for leather to say how quickly they got to the other end.
Thanks for the comment. Couldn’t agree more and that’s the reason why I get out and adventure ride so that I can see awesome scenery like this 👍
Don't want to have these noisy guys on the trails. Spoils the quietness. Take a backpack and hike or MTB, makes the experience even better. The view will be there as well.
Private land and authorised to ride it on a motorbike with permission, just like other side by side vehicles and farm vehicles that use this track and other like it on a regular basis. I'm not able to walk or mountain bike tracks like this, so having the ability to experience this via a vehicle to get me up there enables me to experience views like this. It's all about inclusivity, and saying that this causes noise pollution is just not accurate as if you were walking on the same trail that day, you would have only heard us for about 2 minutes and our adventure bikes are not loud as you heard in the video. Unfortunately not all adventure riders are as courteous and sensible, but the 99% majority of us are. Kind of the same % stats in most cases including MTB riders and hikers.
@@kiwionbike Many times its unnecessary to have the noise the bikes make. Somehow the riders seem to think it makes them cool. In that light I made the remark. I'm sure you know what I mean turning of the engines on a beauitiful spot like that.
@@frommbmars7157 thanks for clarifying, fully understand now and agree 👍
Some people just have to have a winge 😢
Awesome footage. Very jealous. Keen to know how you go about organising trips like these - finding routes, getting permission etc as you totally nailed it on this trip
Thanks mate for the feedback, really appreciate it! You just gave me a good idea for a video to make about sharing how I go about organising and finding routes etc. Stay tuned! :)
@@kiwionbike Great idea. Where was this trip or are you keen to protect the farmer who gave you access?
@@yachtmustang yeah I can't give out that info sorry
Wonderful footage and photography. Many thanks for sharing. Always enjoy watching. I only wish you would give a little more commentary. Which lakes are these? I presume you are based in Christchurch? Yes? Cheers.
No worries, glad I can get a chance to make these videos. Thanks for the feedback on the commentary suggestion as I was thinking about whether to add some in or not. Will definitely consider it for future videos now. I'm based in Rangiora just north of Christchurch.
Yes absolutely stunning 👍
Cheers mate, really appreciate the comment and feedback 👍
That is honestly stunning - brilliant footage and videography 👍
Thanks mate, was one of the best rides of my life.
Looks good👍
Thanks 👍
Cool mods. However, I came here to hear your reasons for picking the L over the Rally. That you didn't say much about. :/
Doesnt old mate need rego on the kx125 ? Here in Aus he would get fined for that 😢
Is the stock chain not made by DID already?
Yeah I believe the stock chain is DID but a really cheap one, and when I owned the CRF300L Rally, that chain stretched really easily. I ended up replacing it for a much better DID chain.
