I just bought one of these a couple days ago. My car was running fine until July of 2021, and then it began no longer starting on the first turn (2008 Chrysler 300 Touring). I know nothing about cars so I wasn't sure if it was the starter that was beginning to go bad or if it was something else. The car has about 155k miles and has never had that replaced, so that likely was going to need to be changed soon anyhow. The car just had a tune up about a month prior. Well, my wife, for whatever reason, didn't feel that the car was dependable, mostly just because of the mileage, which is ridiculous. To me it seemed to be fine, although I wanted to fix the issue that was at hand. I'd also already bought a new car for her so I didn't think we needed to replace the Chrysler as well. However, I got sick of hearing about it, especially when the car started taking about 4 or 5 hard turns to begin to start (come September 2021). So I bought a new car then. I kept starting the Chrysler once a week for the first few weeks, but then just got way too busy and let the car sit. I would've sold it if I had sought out and found a buyer, but I first wanted to fix the issue that was at hand, and I just didn't have much spare time to deal with it. It sat for at least 5 months so the battery is obviously dead. That's the 2nd time it sat for a while. It also sat for 4 years in storage when I wen to Japan for my last duty station before retiring from the Marines. Anyhow, I bought one of these NOCO GB40s and hooked it up correctly, positive (red) to positive and negative (black) to negative, but the device still reads as if it's detecting reverse polarity. I believe it's also supposed to light up like this when the battery has less than 2 volts or is completely dead. I found one RUclips video, in which the person said if this happens and you run into an issue with the boost mode/manual override failing to work, he said you can disconnect one of the clamps, which will then show the green light again, and he said at that point you can push the boost mode button for 3 seconds. Since the safety feature is removed, you then just have to be careful when putting the positive clamp back on. When doing this, I'm not sure if it was more unsafe to be removing the positive or the negative while the device is on just prior to pushing the Boost button. I know it's not even recommended to do it this way at all. But I did it exactly the way he did it and it worked. After removing the positive, turning on the boost (while the negative was still connected to the negative) and beginning to re-clamp the positive, there were were some small sparks when I first got it close to connecting. It got me to back off for a second, but I tried again and there were no sparks, and it got connected. I was then able to get the car to start, although it was by far the roughest the car had ever sounded and there was some flickering of lights inside the car for a second. The car sounded horrible. That was a couple of days ago. Today, I wanted to try to start it again, but before doing so I wanted to find that video again. I've watched almost every video on RUclips about this device and for the life of me I can't find the one in which the guy explained this. To your knowledge, is doing what he did truly dangerous? And if so, would it have been safer to do almost the same thing, but to remove only the negative first in order to start up the override, and then reattach the negative, versus removing the positive, starting the override, and re-clamping the positive. Sorry, I should've written a book about this, but I'd appreciate your feedback.
