Toothpick Baren
Exploring cheap, accessible hand printing materials, I am exploring hand printing relief prints with a baren made from toothpicks. This device/technique is credited to Professor Seishi Ozaku (web.archive.org/web/20070524085949/homepage.usask.ca/~nis715/S%20Ozakus.htm). Try it out.

Collagraph Intaglio Techniques: À la poupée, Viscosity printing, Chine-collé

Some color and texture variations for the collagraph print. Tutorials on three techniques to apply color and/or texture, using Austin Peay State University printmaking studio.
Polyester Plate Lithography (Home Studio)
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
Tutorial on printing a polyester plate (also known by brand names as Smart Plates or Pronto Plates) at home without a press. This video assumes some knowledge of hand-printing and home clean up procedure, as well as a familiarity with the basics of lithography printing. Much quicker and more accessible than Kitchen Lithography.
Multi-Stencil Graphics

Variation of multiple stencil graphics. Uses Adobe Illustrator to design, hand-applied water-based ink through cut paper stencil. This is working with direct imagery as compared to a typographic design in previous videos.
Kitchen Lithography Redux
Просмотров 10 тыс.4 года назад
Another attempt at Kitchen Lithography. I have made a few plates that confirm a process that is more reliable and produce and "edition" of prints. The process borrows heavily from Henry Gepfer (ruclips.net/video/iNRH4i3DQEk/видео.html) and Phoebe Todd-Parrish (ruclips.net/video/J2ihtBbxrK0/видео.html).
Multi-Layer Type Stencil

Home studio approach to using stencils as it relates to wood type/letterpress assignment. Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to design the image, assign layers for output, and translating that output into stencil editions.

Early attempts and process overview for students looking to make lithographs without a press or traditional equipment. These are rough tests, with some successes and errors. How do you etch the plate? I did not see or read that part in this video! Or does the sharpie or ink pen attract the rolled on with a brayer oil based ink?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 15 дней назад

      @@dawnhoffmann3685 The plate is sensitized, so anything not drawn attracts water and rejects ink (when wet). The sharpie and ball point pen reject water therefore attract ink. These plates are made to be quick, skipping the whole etch process, but they are limited. Thanks for watching and the comment.

    Thanks for sharing. I followed the other RUclips videos (using Cola and veggie oil) step by step and the results are horrible… Very difficult printmaking methods for beginners like me. Charcoal pencil, ball point pen don’t work for me.

    this is a really awesome comparison video, i've been looking for cheap ways to diy certain tools since I'm new to printmaking and cant't spend a fortune on this stuff yet, so I'm definitely gonna try this hack out. I totally agree that the print made with the toothpick baren looks the best. thanks!

    Would it work better if you did the etch before you used the oil to dissolve the image?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 2 года назад

      Worth trying, I mean we do etch a litho stone before the dissolve/rub up part so that logic makes sense. If I get back to this process some time soon, I'll get that a go.

    The difference between vinegar and coke is that coke contains gum arabic, and therefore is closer to etching solutions used in stone litography. I believe the gum arabic protects the hydrophilic parts of the plate during the etching. Anyway, thank you for the gorgeous and informative video!

    can you use normal oil ink for oil paintings? what are the alternatives to the expensive and bulky (at least in my country) litho/relief ink? What can you draw the image with?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 3 года назад

      Hmmm. I've never tried it but I am going to guess at what may happen. The oil-based ink often has waxes and driers and other additives that condition it for an even drying time and helps it roll out. Oil paint is likely to have a different combination of wax/oil/pigment/additives so it's likely to behave differently. You can buy small tubes of oil-based ink if it's just the size. Since lithography-especially Kitchen Litho-is so fussy, introducing new variables may make things difficult. That said, if you try it and it works, then maybe it's doing something better than oil-based printmaking ink does. Long way of saying I don't know but I have doubts.

    Hi I really enjoy your videos. I am curious if this would be the same technique for paper litho? I was also wondering how you hold the spoon, are you using the edges or the ball of the spoon to apply the pressure? Have you experimented with other dedicated palm presses?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 3 года назад

      Thanks for watching and the very specific questions. This should work for paper litho, though I can rarely get more than a couple prints from that processes versus the Prontoplates/Smartplates (which I can print at least 20 most times). I am using the ball of the spoon for most of it but then the edge when I need to apply more pressure on certain areas. I've tried other palm presses but not made a video. People like the glass Frog and that works well. A really good barren is probably best though, I have a ball-bearing barren from McClain's that I love.

      Oh no! My students had mixed success too, meaning lots of failures. I couldn't get sharpie to work,so I used litho crayons, yet all of them said sharpie or permanent marker was the best, most reliable. If you haven't tried it yet, maybe sharpie will do it

    would ink jet work too?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 4 года назад

      You're free to try it, but inkjet ink is water soluble so it's like it would wash off during the sponging process. Laser jet and photocopy use a fused plastic so it rejects the water, allowing ink to gather. If you have any success with an ink jet test, I'd be very curious to hear about it.

    • @sutoo2
      @sutoo2 3 года назад

      No. Ink Jet printer ink soaks into paper. A laser or photocopy uses toner that is adhered to paper with heat. The toner actually sits on top of the paper. It is the toner that attracts the ink. You can use a Sharpie to draw on the polyester plate as well.,

    Thanks for sharing this Patrick, I like also how the stencils are 'hinged' to the paper pad . Are you familiar with the work of Pati Scobey? visit this link and scroll down its about the 4th demonstration(SGC's Conference 2016 ) listed elizabethbusey.com/demonstrations-stretch-mind/. I really like the soft edges achievable and how one is able to incorporate tone. I have also seen some Inuit artists incorporating tone with stencil based prints. By the way do you have experience of collagraph plate making?

    • @twinbeepress
      @twinbeepress 3 года назад

      Thanks for the comment, I'm so sorry I didn't notice this until now! I do have some experience with collagraph, I should have some videos on my channel. Thanks for the link! I was definitely at SGCI in 2016 but must have missed Pati Scobey. Her technique is so much more refined than mine-I agree that the softness she's achieving is incredible. TBH I developed this project/process quickly assuming students had little resources, though I clearly should invest in pochoir proper. I'll also look out for Inuit artists using stencil, as I was unaware of that as well. Thanks so much. Again, apologies for not recognizing your generous comment earlier.
