It’s a wonder that the states or colonies didn’t have left and right hand drive vehicles to match their different gauge railways I never really understood why it took so long to get out of the Sydney area until they built the freeway to Goulburn when you look at the height of bridges imagine what it would have been like with horses and other animals whoops better look around for another route

I lived in Albury in the early 1970's and my father opened the Albury Travelodge, now I believe its the Atura. We still call in regularly, and have stayed more than a few times on the way south (or returning north). Thanks for a reminder of what the roads were like in the past

Thanks for that, very interesting. Being from Yass, I can tell you that the road in the left photo at 30:00 still follows that path with the bend, creek crossing and hill climb. A lot more houses in the view these days though...

Used to love the drive from Wollongong to Canberra when I was a kid in the 70's. Up Macquarie Pass (that scared the crap out of me back then) thought Robertson and Moss Vale then onto the winding Hume and stop off at the cafe across from the park in Goulburn. Loved going through all the tiny old towns and looking out for roos that were common, was bush straight to the side of the road on the old Hume. I got to drive it a few times going to and From Adelaide before the Goulburn and other bypasses in the late 80's early 90's when it mainly single lane. Wasn't too bad if you weren't a fool. Boring now.

Great video, thank you very much. My 4x great-grandfather, Luke Everitt, was Albury's first builder, commencing business in 1845. The family owned land on Dean & Guinea streets, and later several of his children became proprietors of some of Albury's early hotels. I learned a lot from this video.
