Prof SVMS MSc Quantum Mechanics Lecture-04
You certainly make Physics more approachable to an average student, sir. Kudos and respect!!
Wow, thanks!
Where is part 2? It was far more interesting.
Part 2 is the matrix method of solving the coupled differential equations. However, I did not make that video (mainly because it was not in the syllabus). Instead, I moved to the next topic of the syllabus, namely the Hamiltonian method.
Can you recommend some books to learn vector space sir?
(1) Easy to read book is Linear Algebra and Its Application by David C Lay, 6th edition (2022); (2) For physical applications of vector space, please see Mathematical Physics by V Balakrishnan.
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan Thank you sir
Introduction starts with complex variables. Then, it explains the concept of convergence and its application to partition function. Further, he goes to explain the exponential order. Certainly, this is a great lecture. Surprisingly, this video did not reach engineering mathematics students.
hello sir , i want to msc physics at puducherry university i have physics as main subject and maths as ancillaries subject but i have not chemistry as ancillaries subject in bsc . can i take admission in pu thorough cuet pg 2025 ??
Yes, you can do that. Best of luck.
@@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan Thank you sir , but google showing that chemistry should be ancillaries subject and i didnt choose chemistry from Bsc 1st year i have take a huminity sub according to NEP 2020 and physics maths as major sub because i havnt interest in chemistry . so i am asking that there is no problem to do msc from Puducherry university??
and i have Physics and Maths in this year ( 3rd year)
Okay, we are updating to include students with only maths as one of the minor subjects. So, write CUET and apply with encouragement.
@@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan Ok sir . Thank you , thank you very much sir for giving information 🙏🙏
Here’s a summary of the RUclips video titled 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐯𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬: 1. 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐯𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬: The video begins by distinguishing Newtonian mechanics, which is taught at the undergraduate level, from classical mechanics, a more advanced concept typically studied at the postgraduate level. 2. 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬: Classical mechanics starts by focusing on generalized coordinates, a mathematical abstraction that allows for a broader understanding of physical systems beyond the basic Newtonian approach. 3. 𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞: Classical mechanics seeks to explain why the equation F = ma holds. This principle, introduced by Hamilton, is a broader formulation that applies not just to mechanics but to many physical phenomena. 4. **Comparison with Fermat's Principle**: Hamilton's principle is likened to Fermat's principle in optics, which states that light travels along the path that minimizes travel time. Similarly, Hamilton’s principle involves the minimization of "action," a quantity that governs mechanical systems. 5. **Action and Extremization**: Unlike time in optics, the action in mechanics is minimized (or extremized) based on the system. The action is represented as an integral involving the Lagrangian, a function of generalized coordinates and velocities. 6. **Role of Mathematics**: Classical mechanics is heavily mathematical, focusing on understanding nature through mathematical models rather than direct experimentation. The study involves concepts like derivatives, integrals, and variational principles. 7. **Newton’s Contribution to Calculus**: The video highlights that Newton’s invention of calculus enabled the formulation of F = ma by providing a method to compress experimental data into equations, a crucial development for modern physics. 8. **Generalized Coordinates and Velocities**: The video explains that in classical mechanics, instead of using specific quantities like distance or angle, generalized coordinates (denoted as Q) and generalized velocities (\dot{Q}) are used for a more flexible and generalized description of a system. 9. **Lagrangian Mechanics**: The Lagrangian, a function of generalized coordinates, velocities, and time, plays a central role in classical mechanics. The action is the integral of the Lagrangian over time, and minimizing it leads to the equations of motion for a system. 10. **Universality of Hamilton’s Principle**: The video concludes that Hamilton’s principle is a more universal framework than F = ma. While F = ma is specific to mechanical systems, Hamilton’s principle can be applied to a wide range of physical systems, making it a foundational principle in classical mechanics. This video provides a deep dive into the theoretical underpinnings of classical mechanics, transitioning from Newtonian mechanics to a more advanced mathematical framework using Hamilton's principle.
Thanks a lot for nicely summarizing what I explained in my video.

Sir, how does the condition for verifying the orthagonality translate to the functions being orthagonal to eachother (which is by my basic understanding defined as the tangents of the functions at any point being perpendicular to each other). What is the insight behind multiplying two functions and taking the integral of the resultant over its period?.
Perpendicular is a word used in 2D geometry. Orthogonal is the generalization of the this to the function space and in higher dimensions. In our case, the dimensionality of the mathematical space is infinity. Hence we should not think to apply the 2D perpendicular (90 degrees) idea.

Dear Sir, How is the difficulty level of IIT JAM when compared to JEE? Thanks in advance for all your sincere efforts.
Here, JEE refers to JEE (Advanced). IIT JAM questions are based on vector calculus and differential equations. However, JEE questions are based on vector algebra with essential calculus. Therefore, even if you could not prepare well for JEE (advanced), now you can get through the IIT JAM if you follow the BSc-level study material like: (1) Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Jain and Iyengar. (2) Introduction to Mechanics by Mahendra Verma. (3) Zemansky, Dittman. Heat and Thermodynamics. (3) Electromagnetics by M N O Sadiku. (4) Boylestad, Introductory Circuit Analysis. (5) Ghatak, Optics. (6) Tipler and Llewellyn. Modern Physics. (7) H E White, Atomic Spectra. (8) Raghavan, Materials Science and Engineering. (9) Krane, Introductory Nuclear Physics. (10) Boylestad, Introductory Circuit Analysis.
Sir plz upload lectures on optics and solid state physics in coming semester if possible
I’m glad you’re interested! I will try in the future.
