The big result in this edition of Final Score, much to Jason Mohammad's delight, was Cardiff's historic victory at Fulham. It marked the Bluebirds' first top-flight away win in 52 years, with Jordon Mutch's stoppage-time goal being a worthy match-winner. For Fulham, the defeat only intensified the pressure on manager Martin Jol. The loss meant they had not won at home since their victory over QPR in April of the previous season, and this was their fourth defeat in five matches since their opening-day win at Sunderland. Jol would last just seven more games before being sacked following Fulham's defeat at West Ham on the last day of November. He was replaced by his assistant, René Meulensteen, who had been appointed as Fulham's head coach earlier in the month, shortly after the club's 4-0 loss at Liverpool. That defeat had seen them slip into the relegation zone. Fulham's chief executive, Alistair Mackintosh, had said at the time that Meulensteen, known for his work at Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team coach, was one of the best coaches in the world. Mackintosh expressed his delight that Fulham had won the race to hire him, as Meulensteen had been linked with the Crystal Palace job after Ian Holloway's departure. This came after Meulensteen left Manchester United following David Moyes' appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor. On a side note, René isn't the only Meulensteen involved in football. His son Melle plays for Sampdoria, his other son Joppe is a first-team analyst at Middlesbrough, and his daughter Pien is a well-known football commentator working for Sky Sports. Pien was also the lead commentator during BBC's coverage of the 2022 Women's European Championships, which were famously and historically won by England's Lionesses.

Happy New Year! It’s great to see you back. It’s fascinating to see that this edition of Final Score includes some rare footage of England Women's game against Belarus at the Vitality Stadium, a pivotal match that marked the beginning of a new era for The Lionesses. The departure of long-time manager Hope Powell signaled the start of a new chapter for England's women's team following a disappointing end to her tenure. Powell's sacking came after a disastrous performance at the 2013 Euros, where England finished bottom of their group, failing to win a single game and looking far removed from the fierce competitors they were expected to be. Under interim manager Brent Hills, the team began its process of rebuilding, steadily regaining confidence and laying the foundation for a new direction. While the match against Belarus was a modest step, it became the catalyst for a remarkable journey. That journey culminated in the Lionesses' historic triumph at UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, under the expert guidance of Sarina Wiegman. In the final, Chloe Kelly scored an unforgettable winner at Wembley against Germany, etching her name into history. Her celebration-tearing off her top and twirling it above her head-became iconic, reminiscent of Sergio Agüero’s legendary 2012 celebration after scoring the winner that sealed Manchester City’s first Premier League title, marking a historic moment in the club's history known to City fans as 93:20. As for Liverpool, that defeat to Southampton would prove incredibly costly in the long run. It was a frustrating loss, and once again, the goal conceded from Dejan Lovren highlighted poor defensive play-a mistake that would come back to haunt them throughout the season. For Southampton, the situation was quite different. The Saints had faced intense criticism the previous season after sacking Nigel Adkins mid-campaign, replacing him with relative unknown Mauricio Pochettino. However, that decision ultimately proved to be inspired. Southampton not only avoided relegation but, in the following season, were never out of the top half of the table, fully vindicating the club's bold choice. Meanwhile, West Brom’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland became highly significant, as it was followed by the sacking of Paolo Di Canio just two days later. After the defeat at The Hawthorns, Di Canio stood in front of the travelling Sunderland fans, and the scene was later discussed by Jason, Dion, and Martin. Following this, Di Canio called the team in for a training ground meeting that quickly descended into a heated argument. Captain Lee Cattermole voiced concerns that the squad had lost faith in Di Canio’s controversial methods, leading to Di Canio stripping him of the captaincy. When Sunderland’s owner, Ellis Short, caught wind of the conflict, Di Canio’s time was up. He was eventually replaced by Gus Poyet, who turned out to be a miracle worker, guiding Sunderland to Premier League safety and an unforgettable cup run.

At 12:13, Robbie Savage's comments were fair, but there was more to the story. The Venky's were deceived and taken advantage of by the Kentaro Sports Agency and its leader, Jerome Anderson, as the Football Uncovered podcast revealed. Contrary to popular belief, the Venky's did not instigate Sam Allardyce's dismissal from the previous season; it was Kentaro, who were managing the club on their behalf. Blackburn's then-CEO, John Williams, even brought Allardyce's sacking and the club's transfer policy to the FA's attention, leading to an investigation. Additionally, Steve Kean, a client of Jerome Anderson who was head of Kentaro was appointed as manager. In terms of the rumours about Ronaldinho, sports reporter Nick Harris clarified in 2011 that Venky's chairperson Anuradha Desai's comments to him about Brazilian players were misinterpreted by the media, resulting in baseless rumors linking Ronaldinho to the club. The true intent was for Venky's to expand their business into Brazil, using Blackburn's Premier League status for international exposure. Nevertheless, no Brazilian players were signed. Instead, Anderson orchestrated the transfer window, securing Mauro Formica from Newell's Old Boys for £3.5 million-a transaction initially declined by the FA due to illegal third-party ownership-and Ruben Rochina from Barcelona B for £372k, with Rochina's agent, an associate of Anderson, pocketing a substantial £1.65 million agent's fee, akin to situations in Football Manager. When Venky's acquired the club, they granted Kentaro complete control to hire players, dismiss staff, and essentially run the club. Come spring, Venky's sought clarity and hired an independent auditor to review the finances, questioning the normalcy of such operations. The auditor confirmed the irregularities. Consequently, Venky's informed Anderson that they would take over the running of the club, but by that time, their trust in their associates had eroded, feeling betrayed and exploited by Kentaro, with Blackburn suffering as a result. On the final day of the 2010/11 season, Venky, the elder brother, contacted Harris to locate a temple near Molineux, leading to a visit for divine intervention, and Blackburn won 3-2. They sought Nick Harris's advice, resulting in the hiring of a chief financial officer, despite needing a football manager. The media reported, based on Harris's input, that Kean was essential, possibly affecting his extended tenure. In the 2011/12 season, Venky's attempted to manage their transfers, which brought Raul's potential move into the picture. Desai consulted Harris about Raul, who was unhappy at Schalke after a disagreement with then-manager Ralf Rangnick, now the Austria National team coach, known in the UK for his short-lived role at Manchester United. The intention was to sign Raul for a yearly salary of 5 million at age 34, despite Raul's reservations about Rangnick, casting doubt on whether Steve Kean could enhance his career. At that time, Harris was acquainted with Reading's owner Sir John Madejski and West Brom's CEO Jeremy Peace, hinting at Shane Long's possible transfer from Reading to West Brom for 5 million. Long had been effective, scoring 21 goals in the Championship during the 2010/11 season, but Reading failed to secure promotion, losing the playoff final to Swansea. Harris, a reporter, advised against pursuing Raul and suggested considering Long instead. Two days later, Desai offered Raul a contract, neglecting Long, who eventually moved to West Brom. This was attributed to Venky's paranoia and distrust following their experience with Kentaro, and ultimately, they did not secure Raul's transfer. Away from the pitch, Venky's had plans to open a branch of Venky's Express in London's Leicester Square, recognizing the importance of footfall in retail. This was a genuine intention, but it did not materialize due to the challenging 2011/12 season and subsequent events that shifted their focus back to the core business. In a separate incident, Steve Kean, while under the influence in a Hong Kong pub, was caught on video labeling Sam Allardyce a crook. This remark resulted in legal action and an out-of-court settlement. Many Blackburn supporters deemed Steve Kean unfit for the managerial role, yet he received considerable sympathy from the media and non-Blackburn fans. It was simpler to criticize the Venky's, calling them inept, rather than acknowledge Steve Kean's involvement in the events leading to Sam Allardyce's situation, which ultimately brought Jerome Anderson's influence into the club. This situation can be traced back to the Venky's paranoia, where Mrs. Desai placed her trust in Jerome Anderson and Kentaro, who ultimately exploited her trust.

Mark Chapman highlighted a day rich with narratives throughout the football pyramid. In the Premier League, the headline was Newcastle's 4-0 defeat by a resurgent Wigan, marking their fifth victory in seven games, lifting them out of the relegation zone and damaging Newcastle's Champions League aspirations. Newcastle dropped out the UCL qualifying positions the following day after Tottenham and Chelsea secured wins against QPR and Blackburn, respectively. Bolton's draw with Sunderland was suboptimal at this pivotal season phase, placing them behind QPR on goal difference, although Chelsea's subsequent six-goal win provided some relief. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's stalemate with West Brom left Alex McLeish's team still in a precarious position. On the N-Power Championship's climactic day, Southampton stylishly concluded their seven-year absence from the top tier with a 4-0 thrashing of Coventry, rendering West Ham's victory over Hull moot. Consequently, Southampton ascended to the Premier League for the 2012/13 season alongside champions Reading, a tribute to Nigel Adkins' managerial prowess, echoing Paul Lambert's back-to-back promotions with Norwich the preceding season-a success Kieran McKenna emulated 12 years on with Ipswich. West Ham, on the other hand, entered the playoffs against Cardiff, who clinched the final berth by reversing a 1-0 shortfall against Crystal Palace, while Birmingham and Blackpool geared up for the other semi-final. In League 1, Sheffield Wednesday escalated the promotion contest with a triumph at Brentford, contrasted by Sheffield United's stumble with a draw against Stevenage in the evening fixture. The relegation picture was unequivocal, with Exeter, Chesterfield, and Wycombe relegated, Exeter after a three-year stint and Wycombe and Chesterfield after a single season in the third tier. Wycombe suffered a bitter end, losing 4-3 to Notts County in a nail-biter, conceding twice in injury time. In League 2, Shrewsbury's 1-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge earned manager Graham Turner his sixth promotion, his second with Shrewsbury since leading them to what is currently the Championship in 1979. They will accompany Swindon to League 1 for the 2012/13 season, with Paolo Di Canio's side securing the title with an emphatic 5-0 rout of Port Vale. The last automatic promotion slot was hotly contested among Crawley, Torquay, and Southend, separated by a mere point following Crawley's defeat to Hereford at home. At the league's base, Macclesfield's 15-year EFL spell concluded with a loss to Burton, leaving Hereford and Barnet vying to evade relegation to the National League.
