Lots of good info in this article- well rounded and unbiased. The weight of a rear rack and gravel panniers is often worth it to me. I think another consideration for mention in the discussion is: Bikepacking bags tend to rub and wear on the frame paint and finish and cables , etc… Whereas generally a rack and pannier system doesn’t contact and rub/wear on the frame finish or cables… because they attach to a bolted on rack, rather than strapped on directly to the frame and such. One must weigh out also if the stated “6.5%” speed/travel efficiency over the course of their day - is worth the bag system, against the inefficiency of trying to live and function out of the tedious packing and unpacking methods associated with bikepacking bags. A rack/pannier system will slow your roll just a bit, but that time might be made up by the ease and efficiency you experience when its time to get something out of your panniers, versus bikepack bags… If the complications of packing and unpacking your bike gives you anxiety, and gets your nerves rattled, (it does for me) as a pose to the ease of use with panniers, thats definitely another consideration:) Great video, these are just some added commentaries, to compliment the discussion. Some of the above reasons keep me with a rack and pannier system for the most part, although I often tend to hybrid my setup between the two packing styles😊 Also, I loved the way the AI says “Bike-HeH-Packing”
