Born on the North Shore of Oahu, Russell’s parents made the move to Australia when he was 5 years old, settling in the small surf town of Ulladulla, NSW.

Russ burst into the limelight in 2016, at the age of 18, winning the most viewed surfing contest of all time; Red Bull - Cape Fear. His humble demeanor made him a welcomed winner amongst his peers and since then, Russ has graced the covers of major surfing publications, released award winning films, received the Heavy Water award multiple times and is a top performer on the WSL big wave world tour.

Russ continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible riding waves in extreme conditions, proving time and time again why he is widely considered one of the best technical slab surfers in the world and one of the sports most influentual big wave surfers.
