Hi everyone, I'm back after the first pavilion video.
In early 2022, we got the project to design and built a new 'Pai Fang'(a huge wooden gate of Chinese classical architecture). The clients supply around 200000 dollars for the project and ask for to finish the gate within 60 days. Therefore, we record the whole process of construction and share it with you. the new series will include three chapters(update per week maybe).

漂亮！现在能建这样传统木结构的房子真是很少了👍中国城乡的木构工匠都是勤劳朴实，收入也不是很高，在国外木构大工的年收起码是20〜30万
榫卯易做，斗拱难为。
做的很好，是否可以参照日本木匠的工艺和所用的设计工具工艺。

这些大型木质的榫卯工艺和斗拱技术都是中国传过去的。到现在他们的建筑用的还是这些技术。这个还参照他们？你要是说细木活差点还行，但是钱到位你想要怎么样的细都给你到位。像这种大型木质榫卯工艺的牌楼根本不适合细目工艺。极端天气和地震会更容易损坏。细木工艺更适合家具。

I guess the fun part about these kinds of buildings is that when you really wanna save on building costs, you can take your old building, take it apart like a puzzle, and then move it to a new location, assuming you've laid down your foundation stones already.

Would love to learn these skills
its possible to learn by visiting these places (like the forbidden city) themselves and pairing that up with some build montages like these. if you take notes the whole time, you can piece together, roughly, how these buildings are placed together. Take special note of the types of cutouts like if it has been dovetailed, how and why do they cut it in a particular direction, etc.
for example, the lower set of bars that first went into the pillars were simple straight tongues that went into holes, but the set of bars that came above it were dovetailed to provide tension and to keep the structure from falling apart outwards. things like that.
carpenter skills are no different from western wood working. designs are available on internet. there are tons of videos on youtube too.
