Episode 265: "Now And Then - One Year On" (With Mitch Axelrod)
#thebeatles #nowandthen #paulmccartney
Now And Then - One Year On. Hard to believe that fact but it's here. Joining Andy and Tom (as he did a year ago upon release) again is Mitch Axelrod for Episode 265. Mitch is the author of "Beatletoons", Co-Host of the "Fab 4 Free 4 All" Podcast and excellent FB group. Mitch also collaborated with Andrew on a video on the popular channel Parlogram about the Beatles US cartoons. As Mitch wrote the book - it was an excellent choice. Congrats! Link is below.
We tackled A LOT in this episode. How does Mitch feel the song sounds a year later? Does it have staying power? It's inclusion now in Paul's live shows. It's legacy, how it will stand next to 'Free ...

Episode 264: Divided Album Series | Speed Of Sound
Просмотров 96421 день назад
Welcome To November 2Legs Viewers! For our first new show of the month we revisit a series we did a few weeks back called "Divided Albums." This time we chose that oft-neglected and overlooked Spring 1976 LP "Wings at The Speed of Sound." This album routinely ranks pretty low in the Macca/Wings canon by most fans/critics because of its paint by numbers democratic approach. Despite having two hu...

Author and Music Journalist Mr. Eoghan Lyng (Culture Sonar/Blitzed), U2 On Track, George Harrison In The 1970s, joins Andy and Tom for Episode 261. In Part III of the Paul and George relationship we examine their mainly George's icy comments directed at Paul between the years 1982 and 1988. A lot happened during this interval of time. Yo...

Tough season for the Giants. My Vikes just picked up Daniel Jones. He’ll be a good backup.
Yes he will! Just couldn't cut it in NY anymore. Not everyone can handle the pressure to play here. Happy Thanksgiving Kevin!
@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast happy Thanksgiving to you also. You and Tom have a very positive McCartney channel. Upbeat and fun to listen to. Keep up the good work.
Keep up the great work Andy and thanks for the “cheer up” this past weekend. The music conquers all. And yes as huge Macca fans, we all know it is all not top notch, but so much is 😆
Thanks for checking out the stream Jeremy! Music Always will conquer all! All The Best to you and your family this Thanksgiving!
Andy, someone on your live stream yesterday, JimVim?, asked about a good value Beatles Box Set. Well the one to get is the 1980 World Records' 'Beatles Box - From Liverpool' 8LP set', the one where the box looks like a wooden crate. It's like an mega-extended Red and Blue albums set covering 1962 to 1970, all cut at EMI in the UK by long-time cutting engineer Harry T. Moss, on Black and Silver Parlophone labels and with some alternate mixes of tracks. They were originally mail order only (plus there was a cassette version). Andrew of Parlogram Auctions did a video on it revealing which tracks were unique to this set. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/J8aGHPi-JOc/видео.htmlsi=TuPcnuYkFCBlB0Xu. They are on ebay for reasonable money, mine was £80ish. Best value Solo Beatles Box I don't know.
Hi Fordy, Yes saw Andrew's little short which I referenced here. The "From Liverpool" Box yes, seems like a great deal. Don't have that one but at 80 quid that's not bad at all! Thanks for hopping on the stream!
Hi Andy! I hope you feel fine... You know about next Paul McCartney Legacy Volume 3. When will come out?
Hi Tony - no word on Legacy Volume 3 yet
@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast Oh my Darling... No Words 😱😭
Great show!!! Thanks Andy
Thanks Debbie!
Happy Sunday, wow the hour goes by quickly which means great conversations where had by all! Keep rocking the Sunday morning show!
Hi James! Yes they really do fly by sometimes don't they! Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Thank you Andy 😊 you are so kind, playhouse are huge fans of 2 legs 🦵 and so appreciate your support, hope to get subscribers up as episide 5 just debuted. Well back to the 1964 celebration my friend!
No problem Paul! Enjoying the 6 Mono LP's! They just arrived yesterday! Happy Thanksgiving to you bud! Thanks for supporting our show!
@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast yes the albums sound nice and capitol loud! Have a wonderful happy Thanksgiving my friends!
I'm anxious to get this. It's not available on Amazon Canada yet. Hopefully soon.
Got my copy yesterday 😊😊😊
Luca mentioned projects Paul is currently working on, (Wonderful Life,High in the clouds, guitar concerto) but other then the new album, how many , if any of those does he think realistically will happen? I hope it all happens, but it is frustrating that MPL can’t continue the Archive sets in the meantime
@@joedee9811 I think at this point High in the clouds and Wonderful Life are dead as a doornail and frankly I’m tired of hearing about them! (AN)
Great show and another fascinating guest. I didn't want it to end.
That is amazing that Off the Ground is Paul's biggest seller in Europe. I don't dislike the album, but it is one of my least favorites. Nothing really bad on it, but nothing that great on it either.
Oh Yeah...Volume 2 Hardcover...Just Ordered
I ltterly bought Dylans love & theft. On september 11. 2001. As it was released. When i got home. I saw the news.
Now and then may chart again if/when it wins a Grammy....1 should just have Now and Then on ie 1 song...
Great, free as a bird and real love shud be remixed in 2025 with far better Lennon vocals,,,,,if All For Love come out will be unb if finished song...also Lennon recorded guitar demo of free as a bird on guitar with extra verses with prob better sound.............
I think Mitch means the song „Madman“ that was in Get Back
THANK YOU. I just could NOT remember the name.
For Elvis they also just extended the „1“ compilation with 5 extra songs just because they are hits. Like Now And Then, Please Please Me, Here Comes The Sun, Strawberry Fields Forever..
Mitch says stay away from Merchbar--I already ordered the LPs from them because TJR gave out that info about their sale price of the Capitol set. He said he's never had issues from them so I have to take it on faith I'm not getting screwed.
Mitch is always great guys. One of your best chats of the year! Well done and bravo
Thanks so much.
Great discussion, and Mitch was right as rain on all his opinions and knowledge. Now And Then is the perfect ending, for the song, the video presentation of it and that final bow, WELL DONE BEATLES!
Great Sunday show. Ken was great as always. I love how you have Joe Mayo (and others) most hated Christmas album over your shoulder 😆
@@astrosjer822 thanks Jeremy! I actually quite enjoy Bob’s singing on that one!
Andy / Ken...enjoyed your conversation. Always very interesting!!
Real Love is still in a swiss chocolate advert right now
also for normal Beatles songs the recordings use often different recordings tapes that may including George doing a part from there and Ringo from there. So its like for Now And Then mixing few recordings together.
for its like for Mitch, I always felt nostalgic about the song even as a demo, he chord progression of John is just so melancholic and pure. Ofc it played with it that was abandoned and Paul wanted to finish it while he gets older and older.
Hi Andy. It's Eliot Wien. On Sunday, I saw the Brand New Billy Preston Documentary entitled "That's the Way God Planned it"This Documentary had footage from the 74 Dark Horse Tour, Unseen Footage from The Beatles Get Back produced by Peter Jackson, Footage from The Concert For Bangla Desh, and The Concert for George. Great interviews with Ringo Starr and Olivia Harrison. Olivia Harrison is the Executive Producer! It's being shown again on Monday 11/18/2024 at 9:15PM at IFC in NYC. Please call ahead to see exactly what theater is showing it. Highly Recommended!!!!!!!
Great conversation! I love listening to Mitch's comments. Looking forward to you guys having him on again.
Thank you so much.
All the best to you Andy and Ken, always amazing great conversation. Picked up the b&n orange vinyl of liamw! Cheers from the playhouse!
Greetings from England. Really enjoyed the video guys. I will track down the pizza bootleg.
All the best from Sweden
Hi guys, The box set is on the way and the colored vinyl from the George Harrison web site. Take care
Andy, what•up with the Your voice ECHO ?
@@stevengroom8590 on Ken’s end it goes away when he signs off
Great to look back at the impact of this song on people. For me the highlight was listening to the song when it dropped on Apple Music for the first time. I still think the greatest power of this song was the amount of positivity and goodwill that came from it. I still enjoy it although I have some issues with the video but there are elements of it that I love. Love seeing Mitch on your program as he is such an important voice in the Beatles community. Thanks again guys!
Thanks Bill.
Another great show. I really enjoyed Mitch as a guest. I have his book Beatletoons. Great book about The Beatles cartoons. You should seek it out if you don't already have it.
Thank you so much.
My least favourite McCartney tracks are Hotel in Benidorm from Paul is Live Kreen Akore from McCartney I Want to Come Home from the Robert de Niro film Long Tailed Winter Bird from McCartney 3 Dear Friend from Wildlife To You from Back to Egg Front Parlour from McCartney 2 Hey Hey and Tug of Peace from Pipes of Peace Spinning on an Axis from D Rain. Hosanna and Early Days from New
Interesting list, although I don't dislike any of the songs on the list. Surprised about the inclusion of I Want to Come Home. Here's my list: 1. All the covers on Kisses on the Bottom 2. Big Boys Bickering 3. What's That You're Doing 4. Bogey Wobble 5. If You Wanna 6. Warm and Beautiful 7. Riding to Vanity Fair 8. The two "Deep" songs on McCartney III 9. The weird long tracks at the end of Electric Arguments 10. Spirits of Ancient Egypt
@@christopherhahn6728I love Warm and Beautiful. But that is the beauty of having someone so talented like Macca. There is a bunch to dislike, but a ton to really enjoy.
@ I agree with Bogey Wobble and If You Wanna. Also the long song Deep deep Feeling. Just remembered another naff track, All You Horseriders.
I don’t care for the covers on the Kissing o t B album too
I agree with Mitch, there is something inheritenly moving about Now and Then, even in its demo form.
Hello from Ireland
Beatles 1 is their number 1 songs only. Maybe they should have a greatest hits package with all their top 40 hits .
Thank you so much Mitch, Tom and Andy for one of the best 2 Legs episodes yet. I am a huge fan of Free as a bird, Real Love, and Now and Then. I have always loved free as a bird and real love and find them flawless. I don't understand the hate for those songs at all. I like Mitch love Now and Then. It truly does sound modern for a song written in 1977. I believe at that time John was missing May Pang and IMO that's who it's about. Now I am stunned by some of Mitch's picks for worst Paul songs. I don't understand the hate for the songs If You Wanna, and Rough Ride. They both rock imo and have sexually suggestive lyrics that I love. I still get a thrill from Now and Then a year on.
Mitch knows some insiders, has he heard any indication of a volume 2 of the Capitol albums next year, collecting the rest of them? Would be great to finally own a legit version of the Butcher cover!
Honestly, nothing has been hinted at a 1965/66 box but it does make sense. Starting with Pepper there are no differences
Great conversation guys - really enjoyed it!!
Hi Guys
Now and Then should have been added to an expanded 1, and that should have been the album that Now and Then was included on in 2023. They could have kept CD1 the same, and a CD2 could have had popular album cuts, streaming hits, songs that didn't hit #1 but were still popular, and the three reunion tracks all together at the end of disc 2. Box set idea........2cd/1br or 4LP.......1: The Now and Then Edition. And of course, since it hit #1, it would be fitting to already have it in the package ;)
@@jeffreyroedel9804 Well it would’ve been rather presumptious to include Now and Then on the 1 album before it placed in the charts!
yes thats what I‘m saying. For Elvis they just extended the 1 hit completion and now all is in it. Also better for new fans or even the charts
@@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast Not if it ended the second disc of non-number one but popular Beatles songs.
@@ricardo_miguel13 Yep! And the expanded 1 could have featured remixes while Red and Blue remained a forever home for the original mixes. It would have made much more sense this way.
@ I personally wouldn’t include remixes because most people stream the „main“ mix and sadly remixes are counted as new mostly so those songs would have no chance to increase the number for charts and be seen by the most people.
I think the release of Mull Of Kintyre was the peak of popularity of Wings a year later
You can't say nobody cares for She's My Baby when its literally the third most streamed song on the album haha (while Time To Hide which is great is the least streamed song! Once I was at a party and I said to a girl I like Pauls music (also the one besides the Beatles) and then she played She's My Baby through the speakers because of that. I was kinda suprised, she knew the song better than me at that point.
Who said "nobody cares about 'She's My Baby'? "
@ it sounded like Tom was one of the only who likes it, its tho
For me a lot of people are saying the album isn't great which it probably isn't, maybe because it hasn't a conherent vibe like for example Red Rose Speedway. This album has for me more stellar songs than Red Rose Speedway, still I like Red Rose Speedway more. But probably we are rating it unfair because Silly Love Songs, Let Em in, She's My Baby, Beware My Love, Warm And Beautiful are just Paul classics. Also the song by Denny and Joe are catchy. On spotify its the second most streamed wings album and the only wings album with 3 songs over 10m besides band on the run (besides the obvious two songs she's my baby has also over 10m).
I like Speed of sound much more than Redrose speedway. I got it right when it came out in 1976. Strange though I've never really liked Silly love songs. And I agree Andy on I must do something about it.
