Tour of the Basement Art & Frame Workshop
This is a June 2022 tour of the basement art and frame workshop I set up mainly for artists to save money by framing their own artwork. The frame equipment includes: three professional mat cutters, used to cut the bevel opening in a mat. - one giant 60" wall mounted cutter that cuts the outside dimension of the mat and backing boards - a Morso miter frame chopper - 4 heavy miter vices - 2 nail guns - 2 air compressors to run the nail guns and blow dust off art and glass - ATG tape dispenser - point driver - and other items used to frame pictures. I also have a 55" TV so the artist can view the many different "How to Frame" videos I have up on You tube. (It also has a sound bar and sub woo...

Floater Frames for Paintings on Canvas & Boards
Просмотров 4582 года назад
This video shows how to install Paintings on Canvas & Boards into floater frames and how to join floater frame corners together using a special glue and no nails. The floater frames are so narrow, trying to nail them together without the nail going out the side of the frame is almost impossible, so I show how to hold the frame together with tape and post it notes waiting for the glue to cure. I...

My wife and I just got a new cell phone and I wanted to see if I could figure out how to send my siblings a text with a video in it. I could not figure out how to attach the video and send it directly in a text so I am posting it here to see if I can make it work by sending them a link to the video. I spend so much time framing picture I have not gotten too deep into the tech world. I have a 15...
How to change the color of a Mat
Просмотров 8712 года назад
This is a video on how to change the color of a mat using chalk dust. The chalk dust is made with a razor blade run over the surface of the chalk. A ball of tissue is used to transfer the dust to the surface of the mat, rubbing it on with a tight circular motion. It usually takes some experimenting to make sure you are happy with the results. You may also want to spray a fixative over the surfa...
How to make a perfect Double Mat
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
This video shows how to mark the inside mat of a double mat by cutting the block size of the inside mat of the double mat slightly smaller than the block size of the top mat and slightly sticking the inside mat to the top mat so you are using the same edge of the top mat to ride the mat marker along that same edge so the inside mat will line up perfectly to the top mat opening so the inside mat...
How to float art in a frame with spacers

This video is a continuation of the video on how to float art on acid free foam core using micro dots and butterfly hinges, only this video shows how to install spacers in the frame to keep the glass up off the art. The mat the art is floating on is only .75" larger all the way around the art. The lip of the frame covers about one fourth inch of the edge so only about a half inch of the under m...

This video shows How to Float art in a double mat with spacers using micro dots and Butterfly Hinges. This is most often used with high quality art work done on hand made paper with a beautiful decal edge. The recessed spacers give the art a magical floating appearance. In the next video I will show how to float art on an under-mat that is just .75 inches beyond the dimensions of the art using ...
HOW TO CUT AND MARK MULTIPLE OPENING MAT
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 года назад
This video shows how to mark and cut a multiple opening mat. I always start with the mat block size much bigger than my original measurements so if my math is off, as it was in this case, I don't have to start over. I had calculated about 16" tall, but forgot to add the height of the openings for the medals, so it was actually about 20" tall. No problem when I start by marking just a side and m...

THE FRAMER Phonograph Collection -Where all this stuff came from- part-1
Просмотров 1622 года назад
This video tells the story of individual phonographs and where they came from. It would be a pretty short and boring video if all I did was buy them all on ebay. That would be like shooting ducks with their feet nailed to a fence. The thrill of the hunt is half the fun! In the old days we would hunt auctions, estate sales and flea markets. We even ran ads in the newspaper for "Phonographs Wante...

How To Cut Glass directly into a picture frame - it's easy!
Thanks for a great video
Especially how you secure the corners of the filet as I wasn’t sure if I should use glue. But I couldn’t see how I could go that without making a mess!
This is a great tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you! I've always wondered how that's done. Now I know!😊
Thank you❤
Is it a problem having the chalked mat against glass? Any concern with it transferring to the artwork?
Hi, does the Stanley 400 actually apply any pressure to the mitre if using it for glueing up?
What a pro.
Such a beautiful collection. I absolutely adore pieces like these... But, hubby would ask me What collection I was letting go, to have them in our home... I adore antiques, but we'd have to buy a bigger home.... lol... i have vv-ix he bought me about 6 years ago, the Opera we just inherited, and Im hoping to add an Edison Diamond disc eventually... That'll be the extent of my collection.. I figure just enough to enjoy diamond discs, 78s, and amberols 😊
We inherited our Opera in March. Im in the process of restoring it, as its not playable at the moment. I had just gotten our horn back from repairs this past Saturday. We were very careful to make sure we installed it securely. However, 5 minutes later we heard a loud crash... Needless to say, im getting ready to ship it back out for repairs. Markus Wyatt has our reproducer right now... Thank you for sharing your beauty. I cant wait for ours to sing again. Would you mind sharing how you installed the bulb in your horns? Ive seen a few beautiful ones locally. Id love to do something like yours in one of our guest rooms... just Wonderful.
The best I have seen on RUclips hands down.

Hi, I'm new to this craft, if I'm joining 5/8" frame, would you suggest using a pneumatic underpinner or a nail gun, such as the one in your video. Thanks
Gloves.
So, how many years, or thousands of pieces of glass have you cut? How long will it take a first timer to get good at cutting glass?
Mike, Been stripping old upper wood sashes (6 over) and staining and finishing them with various clearcoats. They basicly 13 x 6 ½ glass openings. Want to do multi window matting in each opening.. Want to invest in a hand held mat cutter and rail system. This is more of a hobby. I made one, and family members and friends want one. Did 5 and now thougt about putting mat pictures in behind the glass. Any input or direction much appreciated. Very informative video.
Great video! Thank you❤
Could you please list all the supplies and any links you may have? For example; the 3M 77 adhesive, etc.
I've been watching all your videos from Perth, Western Australia. They are so helpful!
Dude, also from Perth, WA! How amazing are these videos!
I am watching all of your videos and they are absolutely amazing. They break down each step really simply and they are so helpful. I love when you show your dogs!
Great tips. Thank you very much.
Hi Mike, thank you very much for this brilliant video,I have always wanted to know how to multiple mat openings. I am so grateful to you for sharing that knowledge.God bless. Anne
Hi Mike, thank you very much for this wonderful video,I found it very informative.Love your shop,so many intriguing things at every turn!
THANK YOU‼️‼️ 👑You are the Best !! AWESOME Video ‼️✨
Very satisfying sound then the subtle crack
Very helpful, thanks!
Thanks so much. I've been watching your videos for a few hours. I've been gifted with some new art and feeling overwhelmed with frame selection.
really nice tips, thanks! ...but for the love of god, work on your audio. Im listening to this with headphones, and i cant even make it through because of all the scratching/friction noises.
Boom! You solved my problem for a bunch of frames and paintings I have from the 1960s which were not stored properly.
where do youget the glass cutter from?
So...first of all, you are awesome sir, thank you for sharing your skills. Secondly, I find myself in this situation.. umm? lets just say alot more than I wish to be, but what do you do when you cut your glass for the frame and you are just a "sliver" over? I mean, I "always" seem to be just fractions too wide or I didn't break the glass clean and I end up having a hump along the edge. I have gotten better to where I don't really have bad breaks any more, so less humps, but I do find myself being just a bit too wide and having no way to cut such a Super thin slice off?
This is Mike, I just happen to be on my wife's computer... I just start over with a new piece of glass and save the old glass for another project. I buy glass by the case and don't worry about it. If you must make the too big glass work just use an oscillating plunge cut saw, laying the frame upside down on the table and cutting horizontally on the lip of the frame and then cut vertically down from the top of the back to notch out the frame at the back until the glass fits and nothing changes on the face of the frame. All the Best, Mike
Wow
Very nice framing job! That is a lot of work, very professionally done. It's a good idea to roll up your sleeves so we can see better.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing, I hope it's as easy as you make it look!
Thank you! Very informative. Just now moving into linen liners and fillets. I noticed you cut the inside matt w a bevel. Do you ever cut a straight cut to but up against the fillet? Is bevel or straight cut for the fillet, is one preferred over The other? Thank you Scott
Thank you! A wonderful trick I've never seen before.
Wealth of info here. I LOVE liners and filets. Thank you
Very nice. You take a difficult task (for many of us), and reduce it to a few simple steps. Outstanding transfer of the critical knowledge points necessary to make an accurate cut every time. Thank you!
You’re my hero! Here’s the thing: what glass cutting tool do I need because every one from Home Depot ALWAYS fails to make the score that your tool made, so what tool do we buy? I’ll pay $100 for a reliable tool. Also how many cuts does it last before swapping out the wheel? Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words. The glass cutter I am using is a Fletcher "gold tip". and cost about $10.00. (The back end is dipped in gold paint, so no big deal) As I write this a quick look on ebay showed 331 listings for "Fletcher glass cutter". There were some individual cutters listed as low as $3.79 and $3.59, but shipping was $3.59. One with free shipping sold for $9.99. So, no need to spend $100.00! Before you buy a new cutter, I think you should give the cutter you have another try. First, make sure the wheel is moving freely. If the wheel is sticking it will be hard to control. If it is sticking, usually you can spray a little WD-40 on a tissue (other lubricants will also work) and roll the wheel through the oil to loosen it up. Once you feel the wheel freely rolling try to score a scrap piece of glass. Place the glass at the edge of the table, but not overhanging it. Next grab the cutter in your right hand, assuming you are right-handed, and put the cutting wheel on the glass, not so much Infront of you, but more to your side. Keep your arm fairly close to your body so you can use the weight of your body to press down on the glass. The further your arm is away from your body the more you have to rely on your own strength and at this point you are just trying to get a feel for how much pressure you need to get the wheel to make the score. If you don't hear any sound, you should press harder and harder until you hear the "crackle" of the glass scoring as you roll the cutter down the glass. Once you hear this sound, don't even try to break the glass yet, just keep scoring lines in it. Now after some successful score lines, try letting up on the pressure and try to find an average pressure that will still score the glass. When you are pressing too hard the glass line will kind of flake sparkles of glass off. When you find the best pressure the score sound will kind of "sing" to you! I know it sounds a little crazy, but the sound the score makes helps tell you if the pressure is correct and if the sound skips the glass is probably not scoring the glass in those quiet zones and if the sound is kind of crackly you are probably pressing too hard. As far as how long a glass cutter lasts me... If I kept the whell ofthe cutter in a jar of oil they would probably last much longer, but here in my little frame shop customers intrust me with their treasure to frame so I don't want to take a chance of getting oil on anything, so I keep the cutter dry until the wheel sticks and then do the tissue oil , as mentioned above. If you want to check out our little mom and pop frame shop, go to www.TheFramer-Fargo.com PS let me know how your glass cutting experience is going. Thanks, Mike
I am a framer at Michaels and I will say that your prices seem about equal to ours or possibly even lower. Besides that though, thank you for the video. The bit about the outer mat being more of a background color really helped something click for me in regards to the design. We don’t have a very wide selection of frames or mats here, so it is difficult to make good designs out of what we have, but I feel that bit will really help me make the best out of some of our more neutral and lower saturation mats. I hope the art and framing school is working out! Collab spaces are wonderful and those who host them are even more so.
skills sir! 👏
Amazing collection!! Well done. I have a few Edison Ideal phonographs if you are interested in hearing them play.
Hello. I just discovered your channel and have subscribed now. Love your collection. Looking forward to watching the rest of the uploads. Take care and all the best.
