JDR Quartz Chromatic Unboxing
I review the JDR Quartz harmonica which is a modestly priced instrument with minimal valves. Windsaver valves are notoriously fussy so this instrument avoids many of those issues such as sticking or buzzing.
I did, however, decide that I prefer a fully-valved chromatic but, was intrigued by the increased bending pliability of this harmonica.

What Exactly is an Orchestra Tuned Chromatic Harmonica?
Просмотров 4402 месяца назад
The orchestra tuning starts with the first hole as G instead of C. It takes the standard 12-hole range and trades the upper two holes for an extra low range at the bottom of the harp. You might know that the standard 12-hole matches the range of a concert flute. Giving us a G at the bottom of the instrument allows us to match the low range of a violin. Perhaps that's where the orchestra name co...

    Thanks for the video! I just received one today in A. To be honest I bought it on impulse but I really like it so far. I’m a blues/rock player and really hear lots of possibilities with this one as my overblows are not musical yet, so certain scales and licks will now be available. It is easy to play and sounds great. I look forward to picking up some more tips :) Subbed.

    Interesting harmonica. I like that it has no valves. My favorite harmonica to date is the Penta by hohner. I heard it this morning. I was blown away! A girl was playing it in a very hickey tonk blues manner. I grew up with the C hohner The Super chromatic belonging to my dad. It had a Crack in the spine of it and the valves all curled up or missing. I tryed to repair it but just played it as best I could. I m a rank amatuer player anyway so I got tired of the chromonica and put it up for a few years. I heard some guy play a diatonic in A and liked it. I also heard another fellow play in F flat which I liked very much. I am currently soaking an old rusted hohner echo in vinegar and baking soda to sweeten the comb. This old echo has the Bavarian twang of a German beer garden. It is a very musical little harp but has cover plate securing issues. My interest in harmonica waxes and wanes so I don't know if I will stick with it or not. I'm not real wild about chromonicas in C either. When it was.new it probably sounded better. In about 1931 is when I figure my dad was.given the chromonica in C. Thank you for Playing the Trophies in A. I'm not sure I'm real wild about it. I think a lot depends on oburchure and oral cavity. I play E flat alto and also b flat clarinet and so much depends on omburchure. I still like hohners pocket pal and penta. Their blues harps are also good. I just wish I could tune the darn things. Thanks for auditioning the Throchius Chromonica I'm out to lunch on that one. Thank you again, appreciated the test drivre; I was currious about Trochius brand. Most grateful.

    Just a quick observation. If you hold the Harp in your left hand with the slide button on the left, you can with some practice by moving your thumb, push in the slide.This gives you the opportunity to cupp the harmonica all the time. The obvious problem is the low notes are now on the right. It would be interesting to play one if the slide mechanism was the opposite way round...

    Is it worth buying the harmonica you are presenting? I am aware that this harmonica comes in three varieties. Can you tell me which one is most suitable for someone who plays popular music the most? I kindly ask for information on this matter.

    • @ross-harmonica
      @ross-harmonica 2 месяца назад

      Is it worth it? Actually the prices of these instruments are extremely reasonable when compared with $300 - $600 chromatic harmonicas. Which is suitable for pop music? All 3 I would say. If you are familiar with the diatonic harmonica then I would think the blue or red models would be more suitable. The yellow model has a learning curve if you've never played solo tuning.

    Good video, Ross. Winslow Yerxa has some detailed comments on the tuning of these harps on his RUclips channel, and they are very helpful in exploring the capabilities of this harp. I have a "pop tuned" version in G, which I got primarily for playing Irish tunes, and am finding it to be a more broadly useful paddy richter-type of tuning. Great for Irish tunes, but also good for other types of music.

      I have the yellow one. Nice and compact for carrying around and grabbing little chances to play. Louder than my other chroms too, and bends more easily. Feel similar to Ross though about the tone versus my valved chroms. Really love the earthy more 'Chess' like tone of those. Very pleased with little Yella tho, both for learning and to cut through in bigger acoustic jams.

    Great review, you took it out of the box and showed us how things go for someone new to this harmonica. As you say its not a new idea - but past versions had issues. Technology moves forward and it looks like its really peaked the interest of most blues players. It opens up harmonica playing to be able to reach notes previously only attainable to experts. My first harmonica was a Hohner 12 hole Marine Band - amazingly of all the harmonicas I own, its the only one that has every reed still responsive - no dead notes on it or worse, notes that make you sound like a child taking its first blow on a harmonica. Though this is 'expensive' - its a fact quality harmonicas always have cost a wee bit. This Trochilus Richter is not a bad price if you compare it to purchasing two Special 20s or similar harmonicas. The slightly bigger holes in this one should make it easier to play. The ability to alter notes/key on the fly is also a temptation. Like you say - and like the writing on the harmonica states - its a game changer. Bit by bit - all the blues players will hear about this and I'm sure many will take the plunge. I missed out on the sale but hopefully they will have another one. Thanks again for showing us what this thing can do. Great playing also. Blues music has always had a fan base in the UK and Europe - many of the greats, faced with declining demand in the USA - came to the UK and made some coin and got to experience the people here also.

  • @johannesvandewerff6507
    @johannesvandewerff6507 2 месяца назад

    Thank you for this video. Trochilus has no valves so they dont stick and makes it very durable. It has a good sound and responsiveness. You dont have to work on the reeds to get overblows beceause of the slide. Note; its not totaly chromatic, there are still some notes to bend. I bought all six keys and i am having a lot of fun playing all kinds of music styles. I can highly recommend to try one .
