Carolina Custom Guitars
Добавлен 2 апр 2017
We test and review musical gear and equipment, as well as perform tweaks and custom builds to guitars and everything in between. It's all about having a good time doing what you love.
PRS SE McCarty 594 Blue
I have waited for months for this guitar to arrive. I preordered this guitar from Sweetwater months ago when i first heard about the new SE McCarty 594s. This is the faded blue single cut version. I'm a little rusty filming and recording videos, so bare with me. I'm running this through a Marshall JCM 2000 dsl50. Also, there may be some audio clipping. As I said before, I'm a little rusty.

Просмотров 2,8 тыс.2 года назад
This time we are running a Hamer XT Series with P90s into a Fender Ultimate Chorus. The amp is mic'd up in stereo with 2 Sure SM57s and a MXL 990 in the back for a little depth. Let us know your thoughts.
Tele Upgrade - New Pickups (Slick)
Просмотров 6302 года назад
Today I installed some new pickups in my Homemade tele. I ordered the Fullerton Lead Set (SLP404) from Guitar Fetish. These are part of the Slick Guitars line of pickups. I am playing through my Ampeg VL-1002 on the clean channel with a little bit of the built in reverb. Iam using the same strings, setup, microphone placement, and settings on the amp. www.guitarfetish.com/Wood-Boxed-Fullerton-L...

So... This is just a fix for my issue. I have done all the mods recommended by Lee Jackson in his video. I have tried all the fixes i could find on the internet and just happened across my own fix. In this video i will show you exactly what it took to fix the issue i was having with the volume dropping in and out. The link for Lee Jackson's mods are below. Ok, so i just finished the mods to the YJM308. I replaced the C3 capacitor with a .01uf film capacitor. It is definitely different. A little warmer, a little louder, and definitely more woolly.
Affordable Guitar kit - Part 2 (upgrades)
Просмотров 1492 года назад
So... we've done most of the work needed to update this guitar. We updated the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan DDL distortion. We have also just dressed up the fret ends to make it a little more comfortable. Now this thing ready to go.
Another Affordable Guitar Kit - Starshine (Adam Jones?)
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
This is a quick look at the Starshine guitar kit from Amazon. They have a few different finishes you can choose from all for around 250 bucks. I will definitely need to do some work to make this guitar part of our permanent collection but i though it would be cool to have a seemingly Adam Jones inspired les paul guitar. If you want to get one of these the link for the Amazon listing is below. w...

Just the Pedal - DOD YJM308 (DOD 250?)
Просмотров 7582 года назад
I just finished watching the JHS pedals video on the history of the DOD 250 preamp pedal and saw that they mentioned this was a signature version of it. I dug through my pile of pedals and found it because it got me curious. It's a little harsh but still decent. hopefully in a future video we can mod this thing to be a little more like the tradition 250.
Just the Pedal - PlexiBox
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 года назад
Full disclosure, I don't like this pedal. The controls are very harsh at times. The only way this pedal is fun for me is when i add other pedals to it. For me, that doesn't make a very good "amp in a box" pedal. I am playing a Gibson Les Paul custom into a TS9 tube screamer then to the PlexiBox, then to an MXR 10 band eq. All of that goes straight into a Peavey 50/50 classic power amp. I have m...
Quiet VS LOUD Speaker

This is just a test to see how much difference there is pushing a speaker when recording guitar. I tried to narrow the differences down to just the volume level going to the speaker without driving the power amp. Let me know if i should do this again another way.
Follow the Wires - Mesa Boogie Road King II

This is an easy one. I just wanted to document the Mesa Boogie Road King II before we shipped it off to its new owner. I am using no additional effects, just the amp itself. I am playing a 1977 Gibson Les Paul custom and running the amp into its matching Road King 4x12. This is mic'd up with a Sure SM57 and a Sennhieiser e609.

Btw. 'Shopify edition' is popping up and overshadowing the comments. I left after trying to X it out. It still over rides and blocks after 3 times to delete it they jump in about midway. Bu-bye ya lost me. Just fyi.
No preamps available to you? You have an ADA MP1 staring at you.
What about the ohms? Amp can only do 16ohm. What can the cabinet handle?
Metallica tone🎉
These are probably one of my favorite amp ever. I love how Lee Jackson makes the great tones, so nice it makes you play better! Thanks for the video man!
I have the same amp and doubts about the effects loops. Did you tried more times?
yo sounds good thanks for the demonstration.
Nothing to see or hear. FAIL
When it's loud you can hear the compression and smoothness. Not sure if it's from the speaker or the power amp. But it's not a big difference. Our ears trick us when playing a loud amp. We think it sounds way different but it's the ear drum its self. When the playing field is level by a mic and mic preamp gain, it's not as different as you might expect. The only thing I would have done different is use a clean solid state power amp, that would take the amp out of the equation. Cool riff by the way. C.O.C. rocks. Saw them open for Metallica in 97.
hey dude great playing, do you recommend this amp for classic thrash metal tones? like old school metallica, megadeth? thank you :)
For a budget amp? Definitely
Cool it's all about the settings and player how good a cheap guitar amp can sound great when played right. But it doesn't sound bad for a beginner amp and guitar combo I wish my beginner amp sounded that good when I started ant not the spider 3 line 6 lol.
is this for low frequency only or theres a high frequnecy?
Both
Can’t go wrong with that Marshall.
You got that right
Big tone, excellent amp.
Definitely
Do you know if the two effects loops can be used at the same time, meaning mono pedals in the mono loop, and stereo pedals in the stereo loop?
Good question, I'd have to experiment with that when I get a chance
@@carolinacustomguitars I love what you are doing. It's such a great little amp, but before I search for one, knowing if you can stick devices in both loops would be absolutely wonderful. It would even be more wonderful if the mono loop stays in first position followed by the stereo loop. Thanks so much! Keep up the geat work!
you mounted your Boss Super Overdrive in a rack? interesting!
Sometimes you do things just because you can. Just wait for the tube screamer 😁
Cool guitar
I have the berhinger ultramizer. Definitely polishes the sounds, but nothing you can do with eq and compression. They were great for podcasts or narrations though. Really gives that clean thick voice.
You know, I think you're right that sounds like a perfect use for that. I'm also surprised someone else has used one😲😏
I enjoyed this video, thanks mate 😃
Thanks for checking it out
Great amp
You see that package with many peaces. When it come from china to US as a package as you se it was sold separately to make more money.
I have to say the Amp sounds very afd period correct
Pretty cool I'm looking for the exact problem on my Ampeg (ill try the resistors). Its really funny that you play a ghost flame les paul too. Yup I freaking love this amp too. It would be my main if it wasn't for the variable sudden volume drops. I got the matching 4x12 with Celestions any idea what kind of Celestions? They still sound great with my Dark Terror head. Ill Def check out Lee Jackson mods.
The good cab that came with these had celestion vintage 30s. Mine was the cheap cab with the crate speakers.
I'm shocked at how much impact this cheap little piece of gear has. The Ultimizer as well. I run through a few different stages of EQ and compression but my final run goes into a HHB Radius 20 parametric EQ and finishes off into an HHB Radius 30 tube compressor. I'm shocked at how much better the quality of sound coming through the end is after adding the Exciter and Ultimizer.... combined total was like 240 bucks. Both the 20 and 30 are incredible (and super overlooked) pieces of gear..... even better with the Exciter agitating that signal towards the begining. For now this is still just a hobby for me.... but I've been playing around with extracted sound from RUclips videos and the quality (considering) is f'in amazing! But the Exciter is something anyone interested in mastering should consider. If you're in a heavy band and you're recording at home this is a must.
sounds like its coming thru headphones im not wearing.. idk, thats a lot of setup for how good these can sound on their own :/
Its is a bit much of a setup, but it's just for fun. Just trying different signal paths to see what happens.
I cant decide which my first Guitar should be, either this one or the ESP LTD EC10 some say the ESP is better but some this one
Well, for what it's worth. If you are looking for a guitar pack with an amp and accessories, we have been eyeballing the harley benton bundle ( www.thomannmusic.com/harley_benton_sc_500_bk_vintage_serie_bundle.htm ). I've heard the guitar is very comparable to the higher endltd ec's, and the amp seems much more substantial than the other similarly priced packs. But, keep in mind, I have yet to try one myself. All I can say is the amp that comes in all of the packs I've tried are basically worthless.
@@carolinacustomguitars I see, thanks for the recommendation!
I used 4 different exciters and enhancers and BBE Sonic maximizers but each one set differently
Jeeez
@@carolinacustomguitars sounds GREAT not over brite either
You got me, now I have to try it
I have a untouched January 1993 VL502 I got a few years ago from the original owner. I'm finally getting around to doing all the mods on Lee's video and this was a great insight, thank you!
You're welcome. Like a say, I wish someone could ha e shown me.
I have one and it's a good bright sounding, low to medium gain pedal. It is quite trebly even with the treble knob at noon. Also coupled with a Klon type pedal you can get a sort of Marshall type tone
Yeah, this pedal surprised me
Greetings from the Piedmont Triad area!
Howdy
@@carolinacustomguitars I dig the video and the pedal BTW! Good stuff! I've always been quite the old softy for most "Marsha in a can" pedals. LMAO! Although, I personally think the Gokko (GK-34) American Box is potentially the better sounding cheap AF dirt stomp comparatively. These are clearly straight up freakin knock offs of TECH21NYC's "character series" line. I used to own the VT-Bass MKII of that series. Fantastic direct to interface bass tones, and can even get into that Josh Homme Ampeg sound on guitar! Why these rando-brand Chinese knock off outfits haven't cloned that one?! IDK, but I sense a missed counterfeit dirt pedal opportunity for sure. LMFAO! Hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend my doggins! Cheers!
@@carolinacustomguitars Yes indeedy
Had my cherry 594 for two weeks and I love it. Though mine showed up with the 3way switch bridged between the middle and bridge terminal and the hot wire for the bridge pup folded back, not connected. Apparent that 55 point check means they shook the box and didn’t hear anything rattling around inside. This is the first and last guitar I’ll buy from sweetwater, especially since I am finding others with similar issues. Thanks!
Yeah, same. I was just too impatient to send mine back a wait for another one. That guitar still hits the spot though.
Nice riff and tone my friend 👍
Thanks, I try
these gokko pedals sound nice for the price dam
I know, I need more
Fantastic tone. Sounds like the 70/80’s revisited. I’ve had many Marshall’s and others... Orange, Hiwatt, Sound City, Peavey, etc... the usual gamut, but nothing even comes close to this devastating ‘noise of angels’. Nice playing and more clips would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Thanks. I dont play too good, but, that amp sure helps me fake it.
Definitely planning on shooting a stand alone video on that amp soon
Sounds great. I have had one over the last 5 years and it has that thick, beautifully gained oneness to the chords. I was nearly selling it last month before I realised that some kind of mania had overcome me again..haha.. Now, it will remain indefinitely and paired with my Vox AC15C1 make an ideal duo ... if you like crispy stuff like me. PS. I am also thinking of changing the power valves and wondered if it is as simple as the manual suggests with that one switch on the back for either EL34’s or the ‘others’. ... 6550 I think.
Yeah you can just flip the switch on the back and it will bias very well on it's own. Like I tell everybody, it the greatest and most fragile amp ever
VL1102, not VL1002? Were the purple stripe ones different to the white ones?
Its vl1002, I'm not sure if there is any tonal difference. I think one is just an older version.
@@carolinacustomguitars Thx. I had the white stripe one, a long time ago. It never sounded as good as this though. And the mid switch knob would constantly break off lol.
Yeah, I hated mine back when I was a teenager. But I also had no idea what a tube was or how to dial in an amp.
@@carolinacustomguitars hah, me neither. I remember playing it with headphones once with the attenuator on full, but no cab. Don't think you were meant to do that!
@@Victor-E- yeah, probably not😁
What's that mix? The bottom middle one, works wonders.
I couldn't even remember this pedal. I just watched it again, it's not as bad as I thought.
Night train fail
Yep, I'm definitely not Slash
Welp. Lost all credibility with me! " yeah Tool ( there alright)" he says
Yeah, they're ok. It's hard to listen to the same stuff I burned into my skull from the 90s. Nirvana is just ok too.
Thank you for sharing this..I'm going through the same thing just bought the resisters
Like I said, I wish i could find some information about this before. This isn't a guaranteed fix, but if you have tried everything else like me, this is worth a shot. Please, let me know how it works for you. And thanks for watching
it would be great if you can show how you connected all
I plan on it. It's just hard to find time with the kids right now
Has it ever squealed (stock) with both knobs at max? Mine does
No, does it do that even with no guitar plugged in?
@@carolinacustomguitars I just tested it and yes, it squeals even with no guitar plugged in, it doesn't matter if it's a crunch or a clean setting of the amplifier, the pedal with both knobs all the way up always squeals. Is that a known issue and is there a fix for it? Thanks beforehand.
That's tough. Off the top of my head, I would try a different power supply. I've heard a bad ground can cause this sometimes.
mine does. Pain in the ass. It's currently stock, and am looking to mod to get rid of the screech when dimed
Did you make that SD1 rack unit ?
Yep, you'll never see another. Necessary? No. Awesome? Yes.
I love it. @@carolinacustomguitars
Sounds sick
Thanks, I kinda tried😉
@@carolinacustomguitars i just bought one, regretted it for a bit but seem to be getting some cool tones now, still a pretty dark amp and my reverb doesnt work haha
I am from the UK, i have this guitar in my stable (performance AFD pack) and it is a fantastic guitar for the price you pay 👍 I am searching youtube/the internet to see if this guitar has been played vs a Gibson slash to see the comparison, but cant find one video 🤔 probably due to it will sound 80/90% as good as the expensive Gibson's 🤣 (never owned a Gibson, as too expensive just for the brand name on the headstock)
I hear you about the cost for the name. I'm turning into an epiphone fan for sure. Especially now they have the new headstock. I'm sure it sounds petty but the headstock was the biggest problem I had with epiphone stuff. I have an epiphone les paul special that feels and sounds just as good if not better than any gibson I've played.
@@carolinacustomguitars Thanks for that mate means a lot personaly..at the moment i am awaiting my own design custom shop IYV telecaster from Vietnam which will be delivered wednesday..BUT yes, i will sooner stick with Epiphone than Gibson tbh. Epiphone are stunning quality for the price, even the cheaper ones 🤘
I hope you like the ivy. I hear they are killer. Even the cheap chinese off brand stuff has really stepped up (grote, stedman, etc.)
Crazy good!
😏👍
Didn't the exciters better work between pre and power?
That's where I like them
Thanks so much for this video. I got my first VL-1002 back in 1996, a friend found it used at a local shop, was thinking about buying it but didn't, so I jumped on it. I personally had never seen Ampeg guitar heads before, so I figured if it's anything like their bass gear, it's got to be good. Three weeks after getting it, I fell victim to the melting Molex connector, learned all about that issue the hard way, unfortunately the internet as we know it didn't exist back then and for me, it was a matter of finding a tech who knew these heads and their common issues - I wasn't about to tackle it myself. After I got that fixed, it became my main workhorse for the better part of 20 years. Over time, a multitude of issues developed, I admittedly used it hard and didn't maintain it as well as I should've, but one of the most pronounced and immediate problems was the volume drop - I experienced it in live performance and was able to fudge it for a bit in that kind of environment, but the final straw for me was when I was using it to record, I ended up having to use an alternate amp for that session because the output kept dropping out and popping back in, no consistency. I eventually passed the head to a friend of mine after overhauling my rig to a Rockerverb 100 MKII half, he said he knew someone who could fix it up. But part of me really missed the tones I'd get from the VL-1002 and I was on a mission to find another, just to have in case I need some tones the Orange can't give me. Found one about a year ago from someone on Reverb. Had the tubes replaced right away, but unfortunately someone did a real hack job on the Molex connector issue, and the amp ultimately failed anyway. So, I've got it in the shop now, and after watching this video, I'm having the tech proactively replace all four of those resistors now, while he's got it opened up and working on it already. I was never able to really open this one up to full volume since I got it, so I'm not sure if there is any volume drop issues going on with it, but hey - If it's a cheap enough fix, no sense in not doing it now - Considering the experience I had with my last head and not having any first-hand knowledge as to how hard this head has been used and/or neglected by previous owners, I would hate to have to deal with it again on this one anytime soon.
I appreciate you checking out the video I sure do wish someone put this video out before me. I scratched my head for years. I had one in the 90s before I knew it even had tubes🤪. It eventually just blew up and years later in the late 2000s the hunt was on. I drove all the way from South Carolina to ohio to grab the stack for 500 bucks. Worth every penny and every mile. Try finding one that cheap now😏. Although there is one on reverb in myrtle beach for about 550 with the same issues. Again, thanks for clicking on the video.
@@carolinacustomguitars Wow, nice price! To drive to OH from SC? That's dedication! But definitely worth the drive when the mission must be completed. They are getting harder to find for reasonable prices. I got this most recent one for 1K but it also came with a matching Ampeg top angled cab outfitted with Celestion Vintage 30s, seems Ampeg made a higher-end cab with those speakers, I didn't know that until getting this cab. It even has a little Celestion badge in the bottom right corner of the grill. I really didn't want the cab, already had the full stack with matching straight and angled ones though with the lower-end speakers, but I got rid of them recently along with my old VL-1002 head, too many cabs. I prefer my Orange cabs nowadays, ESPECIALLY with this head, the big fat bottom end is incredible, I get the thickest tones from this head through an Orange PPC212 or PPC412. They really work great with pretty much any head. But it a was a good price regardless, just for the speakers alone. I have to admit though, I didn't have to make a drive like that, lol. The seller was an hour south of me in the Philly, PA region, but ends up he worked at Martin Guitar in Nazareth, PA which is like 15 minutes away from me, so he delisted it from Reverb, met up with him in the parking lot at Martin and paid him cash. Worked for both of us, it seems... Whatever you do, don't get rid of that Ampeg straight cab I see in your video. From my own digging, they are all but impossible to find anymore, I had one, and somewhat recently unloaded it because I had too many cabs, nowhere to go with them. Part of me is regretting it, I should've at least held on to that bottom straight cab.
Yeah, I got the head and cab in ohio. But, I didn't get the high end one. It is amazing how much better it sounds now that I put v30s and greenbacks cross patterned in it. But I still run the ampeg through my recto oversized cab for the low end like you. That's the one thing it lacks is a chunky low end in my opinion. Luckily we now own 3 vls. So bbn I will be attempting a depth mod on one of them.
@@carolinacustomguitars Nice, awesome speaker config, I bet you get some thickness out of that. I played around with a recto cab in the past as well, they will definitely give you some chunk, that's one thing I did always love about that cab. Rumble on...
Shouldn’t the noise gate be right after the guitar?
Sometimes. I just had alot of noise from the pedals themselves, so if I put it before them, it wouldn't quiet the pedals. Noisy power supply I think was the issue.
@@carolinacustomguitarsI see. just a thought, maybe put it after your pedals but before the “Amp”. Seems like the noise gate will take away some of the tone of the amp or amp pedal. Just a thought
@@carolinacustomguitars get one of those ISP Decimator II G-String pedals, there you can loop your pedal chain back in and have it mute everything, but reacting to the noise from the guitar, which makes for way more precise gating.
@@robertsteinberger or boss ns-2 4 cable method, best gate ever.
Good varied tweaking of the pedal. This pedal does seem to have some versatility. It would be useful to hear a little more playing (with dynamics) after each tweak to the controls. Most players will not have the fairly upscale equipment & guitar used but such is often the case with demo videos... Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching. It is an awesome pedal, regardless of price.
