I read Dhalgren while commuting from downtown Los Angeles to Westwood and back on the Wilshire bus. It's about 3.5 hours round trip. I would sometimes doze off and pick up where I had left off reading. Very hypnagogic experience. After watching review vids, I believe I had a great experience reading this book

I discovered Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children when I was 14, and he became my favorite author. His prose style is controversial; I find it technical and respectable, as well as emotionally resonant. A rare combination amongst sci fi writers, in my experience. Rest in peace, Greg Bear!

Huh? I don't remember when I started reading this - it was a long time ago. I don't remember how many pages I managed - 200? 300? before I got distracted by vastly more interesting stuff to do. A year?, or two? later I tried again. Another 100? or 200? pages? That was a while ago. I am quite capable of ignoring sex - that stuff usually seems pointless to me. My experience of the book was that whatever was happening, even when there were some sort of action scenes, it was described in such a way as to be mind-numbingly... mind-numbing. It was like wading through treacle. I want to finish the bloody thing - because I am a completionist, and because I discovered it via a list of 162 Scifi and Fantasy Classics that I am working my way through these past 25 years, but it is going to be excruciatingly torturous. I was hoping I might find some help understanding what the fuck is the point, but I suppose no one will be willing to share "spoilers". Does it accurately describe some sort of psychiatric condition? Aaarggghhh.

No, you don't have to police anybody (no: Not even kids!) when it comes to reading material! Seriously, what's wrong with you people! Censorship is always bad and it's parental responsibility to talk about what their kids experience, but trying to shelter children from the world will always end badly! No, I am not saying give 'Mein Kampf' to 5 year olds, but if a teenager wants to read it? Let them, but: Talk with them about it, explain why that ideolgy is evil etc.!

Parable of the... Haha. I do find the slogan used by the far-right group in the story(-ies) interesting--especially since it's unlikely that anyone in politics has read Butler's work. 😂 But it's actually libs who are demonstrably trying to destroy America. They are allowing homeless camps to set up in front of private homes (cue the mass exodus from California over the past 2 years especially). They are literally attacking peaceful protestors. They are wantonly allowing criminals into the country via agreement with open border policies. No one's perfect...but the L has set it up so we *need* to arm ourselves (and I mean everyone does, not just righties). The gestapo-esque imagery for the R is hilarious given the current war on our minds, which is far more insidious--and invisible unless you're on your guard. So...I shall read Octavia Butler's work with mirth.

I read story collections and popular science books by Poul Anderson, Asimov, Clarke, Niven, etc. in high school and college. The key novels I read in college were proto-cyberpunk and early cyberpunk (Neuromancer, Shockwave Rider, Blood Music, Alfred Bester's early novels). I read _The Nine Billion Names of God_ story collection when I was younger and I thought it was great.
