Thanks for checking out our channel; I hope you find something interesting and helpful here! Why Restless? Because gardening is never static, things are always changing. There is always something to do, even if it is only planning for the next project! Gardens are never complete, they ever evolving. We are real-life gardening on a budget on 1.2 acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania, zone 6b/7a, no sponsors or free stuff here. So if that interests you, welcome!
In 2022, I decided to quit my 9 to 5 career to garden for a living! I took some horticulture and design classes in early 2023 and started working at a local garden center in March 2023 and really haven't looked back. That's why we are now gardening on a budget!

Part two of frequently asked questions at the garden center. With the tips provided in this video, you can definitely still plant in the fall and overwinter your plants in containers, depending on your zone, of course. It's so hard not to buy plants this late in the year because you get such great deals! Even if you can't get them in the ground it's easy to overwinter plants to ensure they survive the winter outside of the ground. Just make sure to check the hardiness zone of the plant; you generally want a plant 2 zones hardier than your zone if you are going to overwinter in containers. We use frost free co...

A funny side note on the Tulip Poplars, our goats love those beautiful blooms. They’re like candy to them.
Gotta love goats!!!
Love the Ginko, I’m going to keep my eye out for one or two of those… Thank you for all that you do.❤
@@susanbusching8165 I would love one in a container! You're welcome 😊
I'm wondering how the paisley pup is different from the old Girard's rainbow leucothoe. I have several rejoyce and burning love leucothoe, and they are really great plants. Was looking at adding rainbow, but paisley pup and rainbow seem similar. I need to see these plants in person :) Great video!
I agree, they are both similar and it can be hard to tell the difference! I think the new growth on Paisley Pup is a lot more mauve/pink, whereas Rainbow is slightly more coppery.
I love tulip trees and that one looks great how it would stay compact.
I agree, so useful for smaller gardens.
Have they bloomed? They look beautiful online I'm thinking of getting some
Yes, one of them bloomed a few weeks after planting and it was beautiful.
Like that Paisley Pup!!
Yes, that one was a surprise for me!
We’ve had brutal cold for an extended period too. We are in a warm up for now but a week from Monday is showing our high in the 20s so we’ll be very low again at night again.
Same here....brrrr. It's supposed to be cold in January, I get it, but this is the second "worst winter" in 3 years. Can't wait to see what happens next year!
Ugh, It feels like the never ending winter here in Massachusetts. I am so sick of the crazy winds we have had this year. I have a bunch of damage from rabbits eating things down to a nub. and the wind has caused some downed limbs. I just walked around my gardens and want to clean up debris from the winds and the snow plows, but it is freezing rain currently. I cant wait for a few nice days, even if it freezes again after. I hate when the gardens look bad. So much work to keep them pretty, just to have winter make it look like i never took care of them :( I watered so long in to the fall everything was pristine before this began........Roll On Spring!
Totally agree. I've lost more plants in the last 2 years with extreme weather than in my entire time gardening, and it's getting old and expensive. I hate what my garden looks like at this time of year, too; long cold, snow, and brutal wind creates so much damage. It's exhausting and disheartening.
Those pop up covers are a great idea!
I bought them for deer protection but this year I need cold protection!
Still looks good. Hope you’re feeling better.
😊
Your walk around your garden in the snow was beautiful!! Love the attic dogwood (they just brighten up) against the greenery. My garden is under 2 ft. Snow, so I like to see your garden. Thank you for showing us, even though you don’t feel well. Remember to take care of yourself first❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the walk. I'm definitely taking your advice and resting today! 2 feet!! Wow...
The snow looks really pretty, but at the same time, I'm thinking you can't wait for spring. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely! I used to love winter, but as I get older, I just don't like the cold anymore! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful snowy walk around your yard. The combination of things you have planted really gives you some greenery and looks nice even in the winter. My backyard looks so stark. I got my first vegetable seed catalog in the mail yesterday so I looked through that for some ideas for my veggie garden.
Thank you, that's very kind of you. I feel like we have so much to do still. I got my Burpee catalog last week; I could spend hours getting lost looking through it! Have you ever been to their farm in Bucks County? I really want to visit.
Your before photo with the green backdrop really brings out the need for that. Sure hope you’re feeling better.
Thank you, Peggy!
I like how you set these 'Thin Man' out in a bit of a curve, I did the same when planting 'Woodward' tall upright junipers at the back of a bed, It just draws the eye and makes everything POP !
It's such a neat way to break up the straight line, I agree! Thanks for watching!!
You are a v knowledgeable gardener. I don’t think you should walk around outside in such cold. It reduces one’s immunity - could have contributed to your getting the flu. Hope you are feeling better. Re needle cast I lost a Serbian spruce to it - it was huge and I thought trying to spray etc would have been jphugely expensive. I do still miss it, - as do the birds which enjoyed its dense shelter.
Thank you!. I was thinking about doing another video outside today but it's frigid again and I am still not better so I won't! The treatment isn't that expensive but it depends on the tree company and what you consider to be expensive. I don't want to lose such a large tree so I spend a few hundred to treat. But it's not a one time thing, it's yearly so that is a consideration.
@@therestlessgardener9287 it’s hard to find knowledgeable people to do such treatments, in smaller towns. Before I could, the tree gave up so that was that.
Can you recommend somewhere to buy mountain laurel? I’m in Berks County, don’t mind an hour or so road trip!
@alice_rabbit8345 Hi neighbor! I think I saw them in Birdsboro last year at Spring Garden Farms, or you could visit where I work; we will be carrying them again this year!! We are in Limerick.
I think your ideas are great. Love the Little Prospect Witch Hazel, are they hard to grow? Hope you feel better soon!
Thanks! Witch hazel are pretty easy and maintenance free
@@therestlessgardener9287thank you! What is the name of the nursery in Limerick?
Achin' Back Garden Center! We are closed until early March, but you can check the website for opening info and stock, it will be updated once we start receiving stock. Plus, you can shop online for pickup 😊
My Wee Bit Grumpy Hydrangeas are also pink and we have acidic soil in NC zone 8. I hope that they stay that way. I LOVE them.
@@8helenjhouston8 very interesting! I'm gonna try that. Would love to have a pink hydrangea with all my blues.
They are definitely a gorgeous deep pink, I am just partial to the purple they are supposed to be in acidic soil!!
I'm struggling with my mountain laurel also. After two years it still looks worse than when I put it in the ground. I think I'm going to move it to somewhere it doesn't have any tree roots to compete with. It's an understory shrub that likes well drained soil... so I thought it would be okay living in the understory of a tree haha guess not. Thanks for some ideas here.
I'm told by one of the gardeners who I work with that Mt. Laurels are definitely difficult to grow, that's why the garden center stopped carrying them. It's a shame because they can be so pretty....
What about more slender junipers for a hedge/screen along your property? Or can you grow junipers in PA?
Yes, I have several junipers, I just have to be careful where I place them because of standing water. The plan is to add more up top where appropriate.
Hmmm... kind of frustrating when your neighbors don't clean up their trees!!! 😮
It's a real challenge!
Hi there! New sub here. This video popped up in my feed, glad I clicked on it. I enjoyed seeing your garden and hearing about your recent projects and plans for things to come. I'm just dipping my toes into landscaping and sprucing up our property after the past 11 years doing heavy veggie gardening. Your grounds are so inspiring. Thanks for showing us around! ❣Angela
Welcome, Angela! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you find our channel inspiring! I'm hoping that once the garden beds are sorted to start more veggie gardening!
I have had Walker's Low and Cat's Pajamas catmint in the same bed for several years. The Walker's Low always does great. The Cat's Pajamas does well early, but by mid-summer it always looks tired. My goal for 2025 is to divide the Walker's Low and use it to replace the Cat's Pajamas altogether. I realize many people haven't had this experience, but you are not alone either.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had that happen with Cat's Pajamas catmint. It's quite frustrating, and maybe I will do what you're doing. Thanks for the information!
Me too!!!!Come on Spring. Just bought a house and need to lay in my gardens.
Yes!!!! Congratulations 🎊 👏!!
Same! Except I've already started planting ... have planted more plants than I've unpacked boxes, and I've been here three weeks... Congrats on your new house and your new space to garden!!!
Planting is so much better than unpacking!
I also love the cottage garden look. It’s hard to plant and leave room for things to grow in. I’ve had to do the same as you, take some things out to give room. Remember it’s part of the journey. I agree with you, work with your garden that you have and not put in more, it’s just creating more work. Your garden is looking great ❤
Thank you 😊! I'm learning from my past mistakes...it's definitely all part of the journey!
Have you thought about a firelight tidbit? Only get 3x3 beautiful color ❤
Yes!! I have several and they are gorgeous little hydrangeas!!
Love a good plan even if there are usually some changes. We’re still locked into cold and daily snow showers following the weekend winter storm. Another one is looming for this Friday and Saturday. I’m patiently (?) waiting for spring.
It's brutally cold and windy here today with snow on the ground; we can only dream , right??!!
@@therestlessgardener9287 yes, absolutely!
Enjoyed seeing the plans for 2025. I am also hoping for a less severely hot summer with more moisture!
🤞 !!
I like that you draw diagrams on the computer to plan where your plants will go. I do something similar for my vegetable garden because it helps me remember how to rotate my crops.
It’s so much easier to visualize it that way!
I love the wire garden cloches, brilliant find, I’m going to order some as they deliver to the UK. Great to see around your garden in winter, hopefully the deer spray will protect your evergreens as they look so good.
I love them!! Thanks so much for watching from the UK!. I absolutely love your channel ❤️
It’s not the deer I worry about snaking on plants and shrubs . It’s the VOLES that eat the roots . In my opinion they are the number one garden destroying pest .
I don't have much problem with voles but anything that destroys our beloved gardens is very frustrating!!
I feel yalls pain! To avoid clogs, I suggest dipping an old paint brush into your deer repellant and spritzing it. I use "wireless deer fence" prongs. Very effective! Especially when you move them around! Thanks for sharing! Happy new year!!!
I hear you! I'm always looking for new ways to deter deer. Happy New Year
How far apart on center are the Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon's? Thank you!
18 to 20 inches to grow tightly together. You're welcome!!
I was spraying liquid fence a few days ago also. It's my first time trying to garden with deer. I'm hoping its really effective. I want to grow a bunch of things that I'm reading deer really like - roses, hydrangeas, hibiscus, encore azaleas. I know you grow all of that, so I'm hopeful I can too.
We have had good results with Liquid Fence, but we have to be consistent. Otherwise, it wears off, and the deer are back! They typically leave my hydrangeas alone but they definitely aren't deer resistant 😒
You are so right, always some kind of work in the garden… Yours looks great for being Almost January!!! Mine is covered in snow, and will be e until the end of April.
Oh my gosh, thank you! I was looking at my grass while filming this and thinking how awful it looked. We can be covered in snow for months, too, but not every year.
New subscriber here thank you for sharing your garden.
Welcome!! Hope you enjoy it here!
New subscriber here. Thank you for sharing your video with us.
I ordered these cloches from Amazon a couple of months ago and really like them plus they are cheaper than Gardener Supply.
Definitely cheaper!!!
I like the black covers. Looks really nice. They are almost invisible. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks! I love that they disappear into the background.
I'm like you, I sure don't want to lose my pricey newly planted junipers! Keep up to good work!
I know, that Juniper just keeps getting worse....
It's so nice when we get these warm weather days. I have bought a few products from Gardener's supply and I always think what they sell is very well made.
I love when their catalog comes in the mail!
I have deer tracks everywhere too. Pecked on the glass yesterday evening to scare 3 away from the backyard. And squirrels have been digging in a pot of hen-and-chicks. My husband says they are burying acorns there.
My husband noticed a lot of damage while he was spraying. In our case, the squirrels are burying black walnuts....grrrr.....
Binge watching older videos ❤
Binge watching older videos as I can. Trying to comment on each of them as I go. Hoping that helps even though it’s a past video. Love your garden , and I find that the cardboard method works really well for me. Is best if put down and covered with mulch and allowed to lay awhile before you plant the bed up. I have put it around new plantings as well.
