Ep.557 | "The Christmas Song" - Building a Chord Melody Solo
I thought this was a nice chart, pretty easy to analyze and understand, and great material for building a chord melody. In this lesson, I play through the arrangement, explain the changes, and use the digital fretboard, which I think tracks well enough to display the chord voicings.
If you spend a few hours on this, not only will you have a lovely Christmas standard under your fingers, but it will also inform all of your solo playing and harmonic choices. Merry Christmas and the link to the chart is below.

The play-along and chart are linked below as well ...
Ep.559 | "Stella By Starlight" - Analysis & Chord Melody - Classic Standards
Просмотров 5499 часов назад
This is a beautiful classic standard that sits nicely on the fretboard in a chord melody style. I've chosen not to use a backing track here and instead to focus on the chord voicings and chord melody solo. Most of my work in the past has been with upright players and so when I do arrangements I often avoid playing bass notes or roots of the chords. If you spend some time with this and examine t...

In this lesson I of II we analyze the great Miles Davis standard All Blues from his Kind of Blue album. We examine the melodic content and what that implies regarding the underlying harmony. In this case, the melody implies Mixolydian Modes over tonal platforms. The form is a 12-bar blues in 6/8 time. In the chordal accompaniment, the chordal motif moves from a I chord to a IV chord in C, G - C...

    Hi Lloyd, first of all thank you very much for all the knowledge you've been handing over over these years. Beside that, I have always been curious (and fascinated) by the way you display the notes that you play on the fretboard.Woul you be willing to share something aboit it? I have spotted what seems to be e roland gk3 pick up. Do you also use some sort of midi controller and specialised software? Thank you very much!

    • @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331
      @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331 2 часа назад

      Good Day and thanks for the question. I use a Fishman triple play for generating the fretboard. It works well for chords when articulated very carefully but doesn't really track fast for single-note lines. Roland has always been a good source for midi pickups, I used to use a Roland guitar synth back in the day when I played in a production Pop band and it worked great, tracking was stellar even way back then.

    OK, Lloyd -- here's a question: Do you think that most standards were created by laying out the chords FIRST, and then finding a nifty melody that fit well with that chosen progression? Or was the melody written first, and then a progression was found that would support the melodic line? Or a little of both? Or who knows?! Anyway... another great video! Thank you.

    • @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331
      @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331 2 часа назад

      Hey, sorry for the belated response, it's that time of year when things pile up. Great question and obviously well considered. I would say that "pure" melody is considerably less common than melody that has been crafted with an underlying chord progression. In the pop genre (and meaning pop in the broadest sense) it is far more common to start with a chord progression that indicates a melody that is also defined by the rhythm of the lyric (prosody). In other words the lyric drives the creation of the melody as much as the chord progression does, lyric-rhythm, harmony-note choices. This is not to say that you only have the notes in the chord to choose from, the chords just form the beginning of a harmonic template and tonal centers. I find that good pop writing often uses color tones against the chords such as extended melodic suspensions, 4ths, 9ths, 13ths etc. I've written a lot of tunes and produced them with singers and at the beginning is the lyric and a concept then a chord progression and then the melody begins to take shape usually over a couple of hours. As for the jazz and classic standard genre I am thinking of some standards, All of Me, All the Things You Are, Misty, Autumn Leaves. Each of these melodies is very tied to the chord progression and in the case of Autumn Leaves and All the Things they are very sequential and define the chord progression very clearly in that sequence. All of Me literally spells out the changes in the melody, Misty does so as well only with modulations. In much of the standard Jazz classic repertoire I would say that pure melody is the exception. How about Mozart, much of that was pure with the melody then being harmonized. The same would be the case for many of the great classical composers. Charlie Parker - analysis suggests that chords were first. Much of Bachs work was very chordal too. I could go on. I hope that in some way this may be of help in at least in part, answering your clever question. L

      That is so good to hear. This is not a subjective topic yet there is so much confusing info out there. I'm glad that you have hung in there and tried to understand because it will open new harmonic and melodic pathways. The trouble is most teaching of modes stops at how modes are relative but that truncated approach doesn't reveal each modes intrinsic character. Thanks for lifting my day. L

      Super, great to hear! Somewhere along in the evolution of jazz pedagogy it started to become only about improvising over chord changes. The best advice that I have learned is to build repertoire and that means melody, harmony and analysis. To my private students I tell them to adopt a tune like you would a dog. You feed and nurture and care for it and don't forget it. A repertoire of 3 tunes that you understand and can perform is better than 40 that you know only on a surface level. Best to you and thanks for your kind comment.

    Love moving those inversions around ! Thanks so much, love hearing you lay it down In a pop context. Amazing lines. I find it challenging it to develop the lines, but create themes for the listener to hold onto. You seem very good at that, I also hear a lot of blues to “help” the more harmonic lines go down easy.

    • @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331
      @lloydenglishguitarstudio6331 21 день назад

      Hey, thanks again. As for lines I think that developing to the point where you can hear ahead of what you are playing at the moment is essential. Take simple melodies and put them down on the fretboard in all positions and practice your triads systematically as you would scales. As for simple melodies I mean Twinkle, Skye Boat Song, Wayfarin Stranger, Silent Night, Happy Birthday, Your Cheatin' Heart, Summertime. Melodies that are embedded in your sonic memory. Then see if you can find the chords while keeping the melody on top. Sorry I haven't had you as a private student, you might be beyond this but it is still the same process for jazz standards. Internalize the melody and be able to hear what you play before you put it on the fretboard. It starts in your head. :) Thanks for your kind comments. L

      That's really nice to hear. I am just in the process of releasing the same idea in the key of G. Working on this as a new format and I'm glad you find it of value. Best, L

    Lloyd that was so clear I followed along with just headphones while walking the dog on this dark evening! A perfect tune for this B.C. gardener in December🙌

      Gosh I miss BC I have to say, week here in AB was between 10 and 20 below everyday. Grew up on the coast and just moved out here 2 years ago. Glad you found value in this lesson. I hope to do another on the Harmonic Overtone Series before long. We have two dogs, walking has been a challenge in -20. L

    Amazing lesson. I have not seen The Cycle of 5th's presented in this way. We have a great template to follow and learn. Thank you Lloyd!

      Johann David Heinichen published our common version of the circle of fifths in 1728 in his work Der General-Bass in der Composition. All musicians, especially improvising and composing ones absolutely must know this. It is rooted in acoustical physics. Thanks Ken, best, L

      Thanks again, glad this is of value. Johann David Heinichen published our common version of the circle of fifths in 1728. It is rooted in acoustical physics and the strong fundamentals of the 5th and it's inversion that 4th. In other words, the raw materials of music are sonic mathematics found in nature. Best, L

      I'm always a bit reticent to do the harmony/theory stuff. Doesn't get the traction of the hands on play a song material but it needs to be understood. All the best. L

      You are always welcome. As I just said to another subscriber this theory/harmony stuff doesn't get nearly the traction that hands on play a song does but it still needs to be learned if you want to interpret the language that the guitar uses. Best to you. L

    I found out that working out a song of mine that I played the Melodic Minor around the 5 ( Mixolydian Flat 6).There seem to be a few things to try out when applying that boost of a leading tone to a Minor song.Thanks Lloyd.

      First off, sorry I missed this comment and thank you for it. To comment on your comment. YES!. Remember that the leading tone to the tonic suggests a major or dom7 V chord. This raising of the leading tone can apply in many circumstances. When you are sensitive to these melodic "forward motion" implications the results can be, well, Musical:) thanks again and sorry for missing this, hard to keep up sometimes. L
